Health official urges people to stay indoors and close windows and doors At least 13 people died and 251 were injured after toxic gas leaked from a tanker at the southern port city of Aqaba, Jordan's state television reported on Monday. (Reuters) - A suspected chlorine gas attack on an opposition-held neighborhood in the Syrian city of Aleppo caused dozens of cases of suffocation on Tuesday, rescue workers and a monitoring group said. The Syrian Civil Defence, a rescue workers' organization that operates in rebel-held areas, said government helicopters had dropped barrel bombs containing chlorine on the Sukari neighborhood in eastern Aleppo. The Syrian government has denied previous accusations it used chemical weapons during the five-year-old civil war. The Syrian army could not be immediately reached for comment on the latest allegations. The Civil Defence said on its Facebook page that...
  • How is Ammonium chloride different that mixing ammonia and chlorine?

    08/13/2016 10:53:00 AM PDT · by rey · 33 replies
I know never to mix cleaners and to certainly never mix ammonia and chlorine but many cleaners contain ammonium chloride. Is this not essentially ammonia and chlorine? If not, how does it differ? If it is similar, what is done to it so it doesn't kill the user? I am obviously not a chemist and have merely an nodding acquaintance with the periodic table, so I would ask that your explanations be simplified as much as possible, as Einstein said, "As simple as possible but no simpler." Thanks

US Ambassador Robert Ford resigned from his State Department post a month ago, after a long and difficult time as the envoy to Syria. Ford showed great personal courage in his service while Bashar al-Assad instigated attacks on Western embassies and eventually provoked a massive civil war which has turned into a regional threat, thanks to the collapse of his power in large regions of Syria. The collapse of American policy in Syria over the past year was presumed to have prompted Ford’s departure, which he confirms with CNN’s Christiane Amanpour in an interview today. This is interesting for more...

Widespread reports of chlorine gas attacks in Syria have not been prevented - or acted upon - because chlorine is not "historically" considered a chemical weapon, US President Barack Obama stated Thursday. Obama was forced to answer the chlorine question during a press conference from a summit at Camp David with leaders of the Gulf states. Syria and Iran were key issues at the conference.

Most consumers rarely notice chlorine. It is the substance that keeps our pools and drinking water clean. It is our household bleach. It is also now the chemical weapon choice of terrorists in the Middle East and, inevitably, in a city near you. Imagine, if you would, the following: A terrorist, having crossed the border from Mexico, obtains his commercial drivers license (CDL) from one of many illegal documents processors operating behind closed doors throughout the United States. He passes the required Department of Transportation background checks on his assumed name. Obtaining a job at a chemical processing plant, he...
