I think that sanders-townsend is trying to say that black working class women supported a black woman candidate, and that is acceptable, but white working class women did not support a black woman candidate, and that is not acceptable. furthermore, white working class women supported the same candidate now as they did 4 years ago and 8 years ago, and (for reasons not clear to me) that is not acceptable either.

so perhaps it can be inferred that, according to sanders-townsend, working class concerns should trump all other concerns, and more or less everyone who is in the working class should vote for the working class candidate which according to her is kamala. she is drawing attention to a distinction based on race. while she did not say so explicitly, she seems to infer that white working class women rejected kamala because they are white and kamala is not white.

Wait— if it’s ok for color X women to be expected to vote as a block for a color X candidate, then why is it not ok for color Y women to vote as a block for a color Y candidate? she seemed to identify the apparent conflict, but she did not offer any resolution or even introduce any reasoning.

Perhaps the “reasoning” being used is that if a person happens to be in any so-called “protected class,” that that person should consider himself/herself/itself morally and politically beholden to vote for a candidate who belongs to one or more of the given person’s protected classes.

Correction, it was on 8th street (although by around 10 pm, the conflagration had spread to broadway). in retrospect, i imagine that the kids could have been non-profit organization activists from san francisco, sacramento, berkeley, and so on (although i did not make that connection until just now). whoever they were, they seemed to be united both in outlook and choice of clothing (and that seemed at the time somewhat weird to me).

It was funny because I had seen multiple helicopters hovering over a freeway from several miles away. as i got closer, i was able to see a dozen or more police cars parked underneath what could then be identified as police helicopters. obviously something big was just about to happen, but i just figured that it was another dopey oakland sports event (sorry to any raiders fans out there, not you guys of course, lol). iirc it was at i-980 at the 14th street underpass (or maybe 11th street). that would have been at about 4:00 pm, plus or minus an hour or so.

i had driven into town from eureka, arrived in the mid afternoon, and stopped at a bar for a beer. i ended up being trapped there for hours, wondering if my car had been torched (fortunately it survived ok).

somehow, someone had even re-purposed a garbage truck, and paraded it up broadway avenue, surrounded by a large and very angry mob.

an impromptu demonstration took over the downtown streets in oakland for an entire evening. college age rabblerousers, with handkerchiefs over their faces to protect from tear gas... businesses locked their front doors (customers inside), not enough advance warning received to put up plywood over the windows...
