Florida to Display Citizenship Status on Driver's Licenses
Pensacola Today ^ | April 16, 2026 | Pensacola Today

The state of Florida has passed a new law that will require all non-U.S. citizens applying for or renewing their driver's licenses to have a special designation indicating their citizenship status starting on January 1, 2027.

Why it matters The new law is part of a broader push by Florida to tighten immigration policies and crack down on undocumented residents. Critics argue the measure unfairly singles out non-citizens and could lead to increased discrimination, while supporters say it's a necessary step to verify legal status.

The details Under the new law, any Florida driver's license or ID card issued to a non-U.S. citizen will display a prominent letter or symbol indicating the holder's citizenship status. The specific design of this designation has not yet been determined by state officials.

The new law will go into effect on January 1, 2027.

This should have been required in every state as part of Real ID.

Will they check for legal status before even issuing a license?

This makes more sense that having banks do it as discussed in other articles.

“”””Critics argue the measure unfairly singles out non-citizens””””

And why is that a problem?

When non-citizens apply for welfare benefits it would be proper for the welfare agency to know that the person is a citizen of another country.

Why give DL’s to non-citizens in the first place?

Why give DL’s to non-citizens in the first place?

To verify the person named, regardless of residence status is qualified to operate a motor vehicle. IOW, they know the law well enough to pass the written test, have demonstrated driving skill to a degree that doesn't terrify the examiner, and can recognize road signs.

People with green cards and work visas are allowed to get a drivers license or State ID card. We are a country of immigrants after all.

No, Florida does not require U.S. citizenship to obtain a driver’s license, but it does mandate proof of legal presence. Valid, non-citizen immigrants, including green card holders and non-immigrants with authorized legal status, can receive a license. Starting Jan. 1, 2027, Florida law will require non-citizen licenses to be marked “NC”.

“Why give DL’s to non-citizens in the first place?”

Why deny permanent residents drivers DL’s?

Florida should focus on requiring their drivers to know English in order to hold a valid license. We went to Miami last month and two Uber drivers could not speak a single word of English.

I’m not in FL but when I applied for my Real ID in TN, I had to prove citizenship. The Real ID license has a star on it that a regular license doesn’t have.

“when I applied for my Real ID in TN, I had to prove citizenship.”

What doc(s) did you use? Birth Certificate? Passport? Other? We should get the Real, but have renewed Passports so probably don’t even need a Real.

Here in California I had to get my drivers license with a FBI check to buy a gun or ammo it has a gold bear with a star on the top right corner.

Not a bad idea for all states.

I took my certified birth certificate, both marriage certificates, my regular driver’s license, the title to my car, and two 1099s.

I took a lot of stuff just in case. I had my handgun permit but she couldn’t use it with my driver’s license. You have to have the birth certificate, and marriage certificates to proof any name changes. They want documents that show your name and address like bills, tax forms, etc. If you have a passport you can use that as one of the documents.
