US District Judge Leo Sorokin, an Obama appointee, blocked President Trump’s executive order nationwide. Sorokin’s ruling comes after another district court and a three-judge panel on the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled against Trump’s birthright citizenship order. The US Supreme Court recently restricted lower courts from issuing nationwide injunctions. The AP reported:

The three-judge panel included: Majority: Judge Gould (Clinton), Judge Hawkins (Clinton) – Dissent: Judge Bumatay (Trump). “The district court correctly concluded that the Executive Order’s proposed interpretation, denying citizenship to many persons born in the United States, is unconstitutional. We fully agree,” the majority wrote.

During this week’s broadcast of FNC’s “Sunday Morrning Futures,” Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) offered an optimistic take on the Trump administration’s challenge to the country’s existing birthright citizenship policy currently being considered by the Supreme Court. “Look, Jason, this is a fascinating case,” he said. “It’s a close case. It can be won. No one knows the outcome for sure. But one thing that’s important for everyone to keep in mind, this case is not about whether birthright citizenship exists, nor does it undermine the 14th Amendment’s birthright citizenship promise. This is, rather, about what the contours of birthright citizenship...

A third appellate court has upheld a block on President Donald Trump’s executive order limiting birthright citizenship. The 1st Circuit Court of Appeals made the ruling Tuesday, denying a motion from Trump’s legal team to immediately overturn a block issued by a federal judge in Massachusetts. Trump’s executive order would block automatic citizenship for any child born in the U.S. to someone who is in the country illegally, as well as children born to someone with temporary legal status if the child’s father is not a citizen or legal permanent resident. Roughly two dozen states have sued over the executive...

GREENBELT, Md. (AP) — A federal judge on Wednesday is set to hear arguments over temporarily pausing President Donald Trump's executive order seeking to end birthright citizenship for anyone born in the U.S. to someone in the country illegally. President Trump has announced he will end "birthright" citizenship via executive order. The 14th Amendment to our Constitution never authorized this, and once again, black Americans have gotten scammed.

Mediaite and Politico are running headlines for this segment claiming that Trump said the Fourteenth Amendment is unconstitutional, which is cute but unfair. What he's saying, in his own...folksy way, is that he thinks the Supremes will side with him in finding that birth right citizenship under the Constitution doesn't apply to children of illegals. What's newsy is him implying that that ruling should apply not just prospectively but retroactively ("I don't think they have American citizenship") meaning that many thousands of people - some now adults - who have lived all their lives in America would suddenly find themselves...

The Republican Party doesn’t have a lunatic fringe. It has a lunatic center: a core bloc of white voters and officeholders whose extreme conservatism leads them to indulge again and again in outlandish conspiracy theories and, more seriously, proposed and enacted legislation of disgraceful callousness. The past few weeks have offered two striking examples of how dependent the Party’s base and elected officials have become on spouting and trying to enact as legislation their own worst impulses. One involves the American military’s three-month-long Jade Helm 15 combat-training exercises that will get underway in July and spread over various sparsely populated...

Don't be surprised if you hear the phrase "birthright citizenship" a whole bunch of times before the November election. The U.S. rule that all persons born in this country automatically become citizens is becoming a major front for Republicans in the immigration debate. On Sunday, Sen. Jon Kyl of Arizona, the second-ranking Republican senator, expressed support for hearings on the issue. Last week, Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, generally considered a moderate on immigration, said he may introduce a constitutional amendment so children of illegal immigrants did not become citizens. "People come here to have babies," he said. "They...
