Gwen Berry failed to medal during the women’s hammer throw finals on Tuesday. Berry finished in eleventh place out of twelve competitors, registering a distance of 71.35 meters. The 32-year-old caused a stir during the medal ceremony at the Olympic trials in June. After winning a bronze medal during the event, Berry faced the stands rather than the American flag, holding up a shirt that read “Activist Athlete.”Afterward, Berry said she was “pissed” that “The Star-Spangled Banner” played during the celebration. “If you know your history, you know the full song of the national anthem,” Berry said on Black News...

“My purpose and my mission is bigger than sports,” Berry explained. “I’m here to represent those … who died due to systemic racism. That’s the important part.” Specifically? She offered no specifics. But would she include the 650,000 Civil War dead in response to systemic racism? How about the hundreds of urban blacks annually murdered by urban blacks, murders met with silence by those otherwise decrying unspecified systemic racism? And a disproportionate number of attacks on American urban Asians and ultra-orthodox Jews are being committed by whom, white supremacists? Or a larger than normal percentage of those crimes committed by...

Olympic hammer thrower Gwen Berry repeated the claim that the American national anthem is racist and “disrespects” black people as she defended her act of turning her back as the anthem was played at last week’s Olympic trials. Appearing on the Black News Channel, Berry insisted that she is wholly justified in her hate for the national anthem because it contains racist lyrics.

EUGENE, OR—In a move many are hailing as both "stunning" and "brave", hammer-throwing athlete Gwen Berry turned her back on the flag as the national anthem played after she qualified to represent America in the Olympics. "America stinks, and it has oppressed me my entire life," said Berry. "My qualification for the U.S. Olympic team is just another example of the long string of systemic injustices I have suffered at the hand of systemic white systems of Western cis-patriarchal oppression and the systems of hetero Christian male dominance and the... what was I talking about? Oh yeah-- America stinks and...

White House press secretary Jen Psaki on Monday defended the “peaceful protest” of Olympic hammer thrower Gwen Berry, who on Saturday turned away from the US flag while the national anthem played and covered her head with her T-shirt that read, “Activist Athlete.” Berry said she was “pissed” to hear “The Star-Spangled Banner” after winning a bronze medal at the US Olympic Track & Field Team Trials. “I haven’t spoken to the president specifically about this, but I know he’s incredibly proud to be an American and has great respect for the anthem and all that it represents, especially for...

The Australian federal police have raided the Canberra home of intelligence officer Cameron Gill... Cameron Gill was also listed as an adviser to then defence materiel minister, Mal Brough, in defence documents recording a meeting with former US ambassador John Berry in 2015. It is unclear whether Wednesday’s raid is connected to the Smethurst story, which reported that the heads of the defence and home affairs ministries had discussed draconian new powers to allow the Australian Signals Directorate to spy on Australian citizens for the first time.

Halle Berry damn near returned to her home to find the locks changed and a strange man living inside. Law enforcement sources tell TMZ ... 59-year-old Ronald Eugene Griffin first showed up at an L.A. property owned by the actress in January and allegedly fiddled with the locks, but took off when he was approached by Halle's gardener. A couple months later, in March ... cops received a trespassing call from workers at Berry's pad, who said Griffin was there with a locksmith trying to get in, claiming he was the new owner of the home and had the deed...

The North Carolina 3-year-old who vanished from his grandmother’s backyard earlier this week said he spent his two days in the woods with a friendly bear. Casey Lynn Hathaway was found alive just before 9:30 p.m. Thursday, bringing an emergency two-day search for the missing toddler to a close. Rescue workers were following up on a tip about a crying child when they discovered Casey about 40 or 50 yards into a wooded area, tangled up in some brush and calling out for his mother. The boy had been missing since Tuesday, when he didn’t come inside with the other...

A reporter at a Massachusetts-based newspaper resigned Friday after falsely claiming in a tweet Thursday that the man who killed five employees at the Capital Gazzete newspaper left a “Make America Great Again” hat at the crime scene. “Shooter who killed 4 people at Annapolis newspaper dropped his #MAGA hat on newsroom floor before opening fire,” Conor Berry, a reporter at The Republican in Springfield, Mass., wrote in a now-deleted tweet. Berry, who covered politics and crime for The Republican, apologized for the “stupid” and “regrettable” tweet Friday, adding that it made his 21-year career as a journalist come to...

In case you didn’t get enough MSNBC on TV, you can check out Joy Reid on The Daily Beast with a wild and woolly editorial headlined: “Puerto Rico Is Trump's Katrina: President Donald Trump … does not care … about brown and black people.†(Ellipses in the original.) At least it was marked “OPINION.†It also had the unsubtle subheadline “NERO.†Reid began with the usual flourish: As a dam cracked in Puerto Rico, spreading fear across an already devastated island, Donald Trump was in Alabama, calling a black former NFL player a “son-of-a-bitch.†During a 90-minute rant that veered...

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Kansas City Chiefs safety Eric Berry has what team officials believe is lymphoma -- a form of cancer -- and has been placed on the season-ending non-football illness list. Berry will undergo further testing at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta to complete the diagnosis. "At this point in time, we don't have a definitive diagnosis," Chiefs trainer Rick Burkholder said at a news conference Monday afternoon. "But the leading consideration for what he has right now is lymphoma.

Mayor Richard Berry can’t keep the “COPS” television crews out of the Albuquerque area. But he made it clear on Tuesday that he doesn’t want to see the city’s name, its officers or its neighborhoods on the show. Producers can also forget about help from Albuquerque’s film office. City attorneys fired off letters Tuesday to Bernalillo County Sheriff Dan Houston and Langley Productions Inc. to make the city’s position clear. It has been more than a decade since “COPS” was filmed in Albuquerque and Bernalillo County. Then-Albuquerque Mayor Martin Chávez banned “COPS” from working with APD in 2001, and Berry...
