<p>LOS ANGELES (AP) - When actors win Oscars, it's customary for them to celebrate with champagne or harder stuff. When Art Carney was named best actor of 1974 for "Harry and Tonto," he consumed not a drop. A recovering alcoholic, Carney explained that he wanted to savor the evening. There had been many mornings-after when he drew a blank on the night before.</p>

<p>HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Art Carney, who played Jackie Gleason's sewer-worker pal Ed Norton in the TV classic "The Honeymooners," and went on to win the 1974 Oscar for best actor in "Harry and Tonto," has died at 85.</p> <p>Mr. Carney died in Chester, Conn., on Sunday and was buried yesterday after a small, private funeral. He had been ill for some time.</p>

11-03-03 - A gentleman, true talent, and patriot, he will be sorely missed. Mr. Carney went to Normandy in July of 1944 as a replacement to the 28th Division in position around St Lô. He was part of a 30 calibre machine gun squad. On 15 August 1944 he had just taken up his position and was hit in the right leg by mortar shrapnel. After receiving field treatment, he was sent back to Britain and then the US. He once said of his military career, "Never fired a shot and maybe never wanted to. I really cost the government...
