Dulles, Virginia – A friend was laid to rest in Arlington National Cemetery this week. At 38-years old, natural causes claimed him too soon, but there is solace in knowing his memory is preserved in a place of earthly honor and his soul rests in eternal glory. A 16-year veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, GySgt Josh Miles was quietly patriotic and intensely engaged in serving his country and her citizens. Josh grew up on a ranch in New Mexico where he learned to ride horses and to take care of himself. He loved the sense of freedom offered by...

Congress has approved a burial plot in Arlington National Cemetery for women who served as pilots during WWII. The women served as Women Airforce Service Pilots, or WASP. They flew noncombat and training missions, but their jobs weren't entirely without danger--38 women died in service. Despite this, they weren't considered to be veterans until 1977, when federal law changed to acknowledge their service. Even still, the Army revoked the right of WASP to be buried at Arlington in 2015. Pending President Obama's signature, that will change shortly. The legislation to reinstate their eligibility was introduced by Rep. Martha McSally (R-AZ). [...]the...

But they have not yet mentioned any times or particulars. Either way, we’ll be in the Circle. If you want read...

ARLINGTON, Va. — All soldiers killed in action will receive full military funeral honors when they are laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery, the Army has announced. Effective in early 2009, the change means enlisted soldiers killed in combat will receive the same honors usually reserved for officers killed in action, including a caisson, band, colors team and escort platoon, an Army news release said. "The caisson, band, colors team and escort platoon are scheduled on a first come, first served basis," Monday’s news release said. The new policy creates a "common standard" for all soldiers killed in action...

Cole in October of 2000. Since 1994 Nieto has been a civilian employee at the Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune in North...

Secretary of Defense Donald H. Rumsfeld is scheduled to deliver these remarks Sunday during a wreath-laying ceremony in observance of Sept. 11, 2001, at Arlington National Cemetery. Chaplain James May. Families and friends of those we are here to honor. We gather here, in this place of remembrance, to reflect on a day when terrorists--extremists--struck at the heart of a free people. A day when Americans lost mothers and fathers, husbands and wives, brothers and sisters and friends and colleagues. They came from different cultures, different races and different backgrounds. But what united them all was that they had hopes...

Remarks at Memorial Day Ceremonies Honoring an Unknown Serviceman of the Vietnam Conflict Arlington, Virginia May 28, 1984My fellow Americans: Memorial Day is a day of ceremonies and speeches. Throughout America today, we honor the dead of our wars. We recall their valor and their sacrifices. We remember they gave their lives so that others might live. We're also gathered here for a special event--the national funeral for an unknown soldier who will today join the heroes of three other wars. When he spoke at a ceremony at Gettysburg in 1863, President Lincoln reminded us that through their deeds, the...

In 2003 as Hurricane Isabelle was approaching Washington, DC, our US Senate/House took 2 days off with anticipation of the storm. On the ABC evening news, it was reported that because of the dangers from the hurricane, the military members assigned the duty of guarding the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier were given permission to suspend the assignment. They respectfully declined the offer, "No way, Sir!" Soaked to the skin, marching in the pelting rain of a tropical storm, they said that guarding the Tomb was not just an assignment, it was the highest honor that can be afforded to...
