Daily Readings from the USCCBSolemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus“Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart; and you will find rest for yourselves…” Matthew 11:28–29The words gentle and power do not often appear side by side. From the heroic bands of...

Researchers at the Monell Chemical Senses Center found that common dietary sugars fructose and glucose, despite having the same amount of calories, communicate with the brain through different gut-brain pathways, a difference that may help shape our food and beverage preferences. In mice, the team identified a dedicated gut-brain signaling pathway through which fructose communicates with the brain and found that it is much less effective than glucose in turning down the activity of hunger-related neurons. Their findings were published June 10 in Neuron. “This work adds to our growing understanding of how modern diets, especially those high in fructose...

According to Karmelo Anthony’s parents, no one wins when it comes to the verdict on their son. And this is true. A man’s life was taken far too early, and that is something the victim’s family will have to live with forever. No amount of punishment, or in this case, a softball sentence, will bring justice for their son’s actions. And Anthony losing his trial is nothing more than a personal problem. If they are upset their son’s actions cost him 35 years of his life, just imagine how they would feel if someone stabbed their son in the heart....
