PIERRE, S.D. (KELO) — The South Dakota Legislature’s ranks will look different in 2027. At least 13 Republican incumbents lost primary elections on Tuesday night, and several others were locked in tight battles as vote counting proceeded into early Wednesday morning. At least six of the contests would qualify for recounts if requested by candidates. As of 2:45 a.m., final results hadn’t been posted on the Secretary of State website for districts 2, 9, 10, 11 and 14, each of which includes parts of Minnehaha County.

BALTIMORE — Maryland election officials forewarn of vote-counting delays on election night due to the mail-in ballot error. The Maryland State Board of Elections is addressing fallout from the error caused by the state's vendor, which sent ballots to some voters that were for the wrong party affiliation. "The packaging was basically for the right district but the wrong party affiliation," Maryland State Elections Administrator Jared DeMarinis told WBAL-TV 11 News. While the exact number of incorrect ballots sent is unknown, the state has replaced more than 447,000 ballots. Replacement ballots are still arriving in voters' mailboxes, which could lead...

Former President Joe Biden crashed his wife Jill’s debut book talk Tuesday, stealing her spotlight to bizarrely ask the former first lady who she loves the most in a cringe-inducing moment before aides could cut him off. Jill Biden had been wrapping up a Q&A about her newly released book “A View from the East Wing” with moderator Whoopi Goldberg at the 92nd Street Y on the Upper East Side when Biden, 83, left his seat in the audience and wandered up to the edge of the stage. Goldberg had read a comment from the audience thanking Biden for his...

ISRAEL — An Israeli Christian leader and a prominent American Jewish pundit on Monday night pushed back on efforts on the political right, especially in the United States, to defame Israel and dismantle Judeo-Christian unity, exposing what they described as the malign motivations of some of the world’s most watched online personalities. In a sit-down discussion at David’s Harp Hotel in northern Israel, Shadi Khalloul and Josh Hammer castigated the notion that Israel oppresses and marginalizes Christians, an assertion popularized by far-right podcast hosts Tucker Carlson and Candace Owens. Khalloul, founder of the Israeli Christian Aramaic Association and a former...

Daily Readings from the USCCBMemorial of Saint Charles Lwanga and Companions, MartyrsSome Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to Jesus and put this question to him, saying, “Teacher, Moses wrote for us, ‘If someone’s brother dies, leaving a wife but no child, his brother must take the wife and raise up descendants for his brother.’ Now there were seven brothers…” Mark 12:18–20The Sadducees were a Jewish sect composed mainly of the Temple leaders, including many priests. They held theological and political views that differed significantly from those of the Pharisees. The Sadducees accepted only the Torah (the first...

Secretary of State Marco Rubio declared Tuesday that the Iran war is “over now,” while laying out what he described as the Trump administration’s non-negotiable conditions for any broader agreement currently under discussion with Tehran — including the full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, the surrender of Iran’s highly enriched uranium stockpile, and severe long-term restrictions on the regime’s nuclear program before any sanctions relief would be considered. Speaking in his first public congressional testimony since the launch of Operation Epic Fury in February, Rubio argued the Trump administration’s military and economic pressure campaign has significantly weakened the Islamic...

"This you know, my beloved brethren. But let everyone be quick to hear" (James 1:19). Being quick to hear involves a proper attitude toward God’s Word. It has been well said that either God's Word will keep you from sin or sin will keep you from God's Word. Apparently some of James's readers were allowing sin to keep them from receiving the Word as they should. God was allowing them to experience various trials so their joy and spiritual endurance would increase, but they lacked wisdom and fell into temptation and sin. James called them back to the Word and...

At least 300 non-Iranian ships have applied for safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz with Tehran’s new authority seeking to create a permanent toll system along the vital passageway. The Persian Gulf Strait Authority (PGSA) said the majority of the ships applying were oil tankers, with at least 77% of the applicants looking to exit the Persian Gulf to reach Asia, particularly China and India, two of the Middle East’s largest fuel buyers. The PGSA’s remarks came as the IRGC announced that its naval forces have escorted 24 vessels through the Strait of Hormuz over the past 24 hours....

I served for 24 years as a police officer in emergency response, public order, intelligence and counter-terrorism. I saw the best of policing, worked with devoted colleagues and took pride in work that indisputably mattered. I joined the police to make a difference. Duty, camaraderie and justice were not abstract ideals – and I believed that the force made the country safer. But, in the end, disillusionment drove me out. Over time, I watched the mission of the police being hollowed out by ideological capture. Concern for public trust mutated into a top-down obsession with political correctness and policies that...

Several female Democrats gathered in late May to complain about how much their periods hurt. Democratic Arizona Rep. Yassamin Ansari was joined in a press conference held May 21 by Democratic Reps. Rashida Tlaib of Michigan and Adelita Grijalva of Arizona to advocate for Ansari’s bill, the “Reproductive Healthcare Leave Act.” The bill would force employers to let women take paid leave for “reproductive health conditions.” Ansari kicked things off: “Today, we are here to talk about women’s pain and how long it’s been overlooked … In the summer of 2015, while starting my career in New York City, I...

The Supreme Court on Tuesday allowed Alabama to use a congressional map that eliminates one of two majority-Black districts in the state in a win for Republicans. The justices, split 6-3 on ideological lines with conservatives in the majority, granted an emergency request filed by Republican officials seeking to use the map, which was enacted in 2023 but has never been used. In the unsigned three-page order, the court said the state is likely to ultimately prevail on its claim that the map was lawfully drawn. In dissent, liberal Justice Sonia Sotomayor said the majority’s decision “disregards both democratic values...
