Nineteen-thirty-six seemed like a turning point in America after seven years of the Great Depression. The stock market recovered to its 1929 levels, for which voters rewarded Franklin Delano Roosevelt with a second term, which unfortunately began with the country slipping back into recession in the spring of 1937. With that kind of good news you can forgive Hollywood for imagining, if only tentatively, that America had turned a corner. In the first scene of the 1936 screwball classic My Man Godfrey, we find William Powell's Godfrey in shabby surroundings, living in a shack in a garbage dump on the...

The Tisza leader campaigned as ‘Orbán 2.0,’ but days into office, he launched a Tusk-style parliamentary coup, purging conservatives, shutting down state media, and surrendering to Brussels on migration and foreign policy. Hungary’s new Prime Minister Peter Magyar stands next to Anita Orban, incoming Minister of Foreign Affairs, during the swearing-in ceremony for the cabinet at the Hungarian Parliament in Budapest on May 12, 2026. Attila KISBENEDEK / AFP. How do you win electorally having lost culturally? For Brussels, when it came to Hungary, that was the challenge. For years, now-former Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán proved quite the maverick—at...

Self-Inflicted Nakba vs the Jewish nakba of Arab racism. **The "Self-Inflicted" Perspective** This displacement was voluntary. Often cited by some historians, the 1948 Palestinian exodus was a direct result of the Arab world's strategic choices. **Main points:** - **Rejection of the Partition Plan:** In 1947, the United Nations proposed splitting Mandatory Palestine into separate Jewish and Arab states. The Arab leadership rejected the plan, preferring instead to go to war to prevent the establishment of a Jewish state. -**Arab pro-Nazism** The direct result of Arab "Palestinian" leadership. Joni Pugh feels like she’s stuck in the middle of a bitter family feud between her president and her congressman. As a loyal Republican, she likes them both – and that is where her predicament begins... “I’m not putting Trump down at all because I’m very much a fan of his, but I’m still going to vote for Thomas. He’s a great guy and is very careful about how he wants our taxpayer money to be spent.” Massie has fought the establishment of both parties since first winning his seat 14 years ago in the tea party era as a...

For too many years, congressional “Republicans” have been voted into office who are really stealth Marxists or Democrats. Local or worldwide Marxists buy a candidate, run him, then plug him into office, where the money determines the agenda. This is what happened with Biden. He had no idea what was going on while the people who bought the election for him just plugged him in, then played him like a thumb drive. Samuel Ronan and Kate Barr in North Carolina are two more recent examples. Ronan, a former Democrat candidate for the DNC chair, ran in the 2026 GOP primary...

A veteran Maldivian diver alleges the five Italians who died trapped in a deep underwater cave didn’t have the required government authorization to undertake such a perilous dive, and would still be alive today if the rules had been followed. A group of five Italian scuba divers died exploring the Alimathaa cave in the Vaavu Atoll Thursday, at a depth of about 160 feet, according to Italy’s Foreign Ministry. Shafraz Naeem, a instructor-trainer with 30 years of technical diving experience and advisor to the Maldives National Defence Force, has done more than 50 dives in the cave where the group...

French officials have openly admitted they have “no solution” to stop the flow of small boats crossing the Channel, dealing a fresh political blow to Keir Starmer after Britain agreed a new £662 million border enforcement package with Paris. The comments came despite Downing Street unveiling plans for expanded joint patrols, increased surveillance and the deployment of at least 50 riot-trained French officers to beaches used by migrant gangs operating along the northern French coastline. Local politicians in the Pas-de-Calais region dismissed the measures as cosmetic and warned the crossings would continue regardless of British funding. Alain Boonefaes, a deputy...

In what could be a big get for Republicans in Kentucky — and a huge blow for Republicans in the House of Representatives — Rep. James Comer has openly announced that he plans to run for governor come 2027. Speaking to The Daily Independent in a piece published May 7, Comer made it clear that he felt that this was the right decision. “I plan on running for governor in 2027,” Comer said. “It’s not official yet; it will probably be official somewhere around December.” He continued: “I am touring Kentucky. Obviously I’m way outside of my district. The governor’s...

The Trump administration continues to release tranches of previously classified documents on unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAP), the preferred term that includes traditional sightings of UFOs. “Traditional sightings” is a strange admission, don’t you think? Aliens and UFOs have been part of our national conversation for eighty years, long enough to constitute a “tradition,” even though the public has few answers for the questions this “tradition” brings. Whether the U.S. government will ever provide real answers to unexplained events that have perplexed Americans for generations seems a secondary issue at this point. The more pressing question is this: If our government...

How commonplace is political violence these days? A man shooting at federal officers near the White House as JD Vance's motorcade passed by was barely mentioned in the papers. Still, the timing could not be better for Noah Rothman's new book, Blood & Progress: A Century of Left-Wing Violence in America. Ian Haworth returns to the Weekend Beacon with a review. “’This is a book about the assassins, the vandals, the small-cell terrorists, and the lizard-brained mobs that mete out destruction, violence, and death in the name of political causes and in the pursuit of political outcomes,’ Rothman declares, before...

Amid talk that war with Iran may be renewed, President Donald Trump posted an AI-generated Truth Social video that showed him seemingly ordering the destruction of an Iranian naval vessel. “OK we have it in our sight. Fire – boom!” Trump says in the video as a U.S. destroyer blows an Iranian aircraft out of the sky. “I’m sure preparations are underway for more escalation,” said Jon Hoffman, a research fellow in defense and foreign policy at the Cato Institute, said, according to the New York Post, which said “intense preparations” are under way to resume fighting. “Trump has refused...

A transgender athlete in California so dominated the state finals that it brought protest and outrage from fans and parents in attendance. It also brought a very unusual move from event officials. AB Hernandez, 17, a senior at Juniper Valley High School, took first place in the girls’ long jump, high jump, and triple jump during this weekend’s California Interscholastic Federation Southern Section finals. The ill feelings toward Hernandez were obvious, not just from protesters and parents but also from female competitors who seemed to avoid the trans athlete after the win. Having evidently anticipated the backlash and, potentially, the...

The Viking Herald reports that two rare English "Lamb of God" coins were recently unearthed in Jutland. During the eleventh century, English monarchs undertook various initiatives to try to ward off seemingly unending Viking attacks. Around 1009, King Æthelred the Unready even minted unusual coins in the hope of obtaining divine protection. The objects feature a lamb and a cross on one side -- a Christian motif alluding to Christ's sacrifice -- and a dove on the other, a symbol of the Holy Spirit. Not only did these coins fail in their objective, they became somewhat coveted by Viking raiders,...

The World Health Organization declared an Ebola outbreak in Central Africa an international public health emergency on Sunday after dozens of suspected deaths were reported in the Democratic Republic of Congo and neighboring Uganda. The outbreak, caused by the Bundibugyo virus, does not meet the criteria for a pandemic emergency, the WHO said. The declaration follows reports of 80 suspected deaths, eight laboratory-confirmed cases and 246 suspected cases as of Saturday across at least three health zones in the Democratic Republic of Congo, including Bunia, Rwampara and Mongbwalu.
