In what could be a big get for Republicans in Kentucky — and a huge blow for Republicans in the House of Representatives — Rep. James Comer has openly announced that he plans to run for governor come 2027.
Speaking to The Daily Independent in a piece published May 7, Comer made it clear that he felt that this was the right decision.
“I plan on running for governor in 2027,” Comer said. “It’s not official yet; it will probably be official somewhere around December.”
He continued: “I am touring Kentucky. Obviously I’m way outside of my district. The governor’s race is in 2027 and I’m very interested in that race… Any day I’m not in Washington or my district, I’m stirring around the state.”
“The response has been positive. I’m meeting new people and building an organization for 2027.”
(Incumbent Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear will be termed out in 2027.)
According to The Hill, this is actually Comer’s second stab at governor in the Bluegrass State. He had previously come up short in the 2015 Republican Primary by less than 100 votes.
But not every Kentucky election has been agonizing for Comer.
In fact, many have likely elicited quite the opposite emotion.
As his House biography points out, Comer won and served six terms in the Kentucky House of Representatives, with the first coming in 2000.
From there, Comer would eventually be elected as Kentucky’s Commissioner of Agriculture in 2011. This would eventually culminate with his election to Congress in 2016, where he has been ever since.
And Comer has built quite the reputation among conservatives since getting to the House a decade ago.

Another career politician grifter.
It’s not like he’s draining the swamp or doing anything effective, currently, in DC.
**I flip the channel every time I see his face**
Will someone pleas post a pic of him next to to of Susan Boyle?
The real questions are, ‘Would he win?’ and ‘Would that be an improvement?’ His departure opens a space for someone better.
Who would that be? If you’ve got a name, lets look into promoting that person instead of bitching about what Comer didn’t do.
Comer’s done a good job in Congress considering he plays for a team that would rather do anything than actually win. His lifetime ACU rating is 88% which isn’t perfect, but judging from some people here you’d think he ran over their cats or something.
Comer ran for Governor in 2015 and lost the primary to Matt Bevin by 83 votes out of over 200,000 that were cast. He had won statewide previously (2011 Ag Commissioner) before running for Governor and then for Congress.
Current Governor Pretty Boy-Empty Suit is term-limited in 2027 and the GOP field to replace him could get extremely crowded. Basically EVERY statewide Republican officeholder is looking at the race. Supposedly Nate Morris will be too, assuming he loses the 2026 Senate primary in 2 days.
Why don’t we see who is interested in running first... how about that? And I hardly see how a grifting, bloviating, panty-waist do nothing is an improvement in ANY position, so up yours...
That would be fine. I'm not from Kentucky. Who would that be?
And I hardly see how a grifting, bloviating, panty-waist do nothing is an improvement in ANY position, so up yours...
Comer didn't do nothing. He publicized Democrat perfidy. How much more he could have done in each case (such as more criminal referrals) I don't know. Of course given the abusive tone of your post, I'm sure you have a list of viable alternatives. But of course, you didn't provide one.
So much for Common Sense 101.
Well it’s just too bad that the leave office to run gambit does not apply to dwebocrats. The two timmys, kaine and walsh could both be on the backshelf.
Both the vp foists. How stupid
Over Andy Beshear? Absolutely!
‘Would he win?’
Kentucky has a very bad habit of electing Democrat Governors. Even though Trump won the state by about 63-37% 3 times, Kentucky elected Democrat Beshear and then re-elected him!
The previous governor, Republican Matt Bevin, tried to fix Kentucky's very broken pension system, which ticked off the teachers and so they voted him out.
So, whatever happened to his investigation that founds millions of dollars funneled into various shell companies for the Biden family?
That’s right, it just went away.
GOP getting nervous that with the redistricting they might actually keep the house, and have to go on with blocking Trump themselves. So just like 2018 we begin seeing surprising number of members in safe districts deciding for one reason or another to drop out so weak candidates can replace them and throw lifelines to democrats so they can take over the job of blocking Trump. MTG, James Comer, whos next?
It’s not as if he can arrest anybody; all he can do is investigate by holding hearings.
He certainly talked a big game, but where’s the beef.
” So just like 2018 we begin seeing surprising number of members in safe districts deciding for one reason or another to drop out....”
Except that Comer isn’t “dropping out”. He is running for re-election to the House in 2026 (and will easily win again).
If Comer becomes Governor in 2027, then yeah — I suppose he’d “drop out” of the House for 2028, LOL.
