“Just be yourself” may be an oft-given piece of advice, but it won’t take you in the right direction as a workplace leader, one psychology of business professor argues. While authenticity has been linked with increased self-esteem, it can also hamper a leader’s ability know when to stop advocating for one’s personal values and start advocating for their team, Tomas Chamorro-Premuzic, a professor of business psychology at University College London and Columbia University adjunct professor, says in his new book Don’t Be Yourself: Why Authenticity Is Overrated (and What to Do Instead).

Billionaire investor Ken Griffin has warned that some of the brightest students from countries like India might never make it to the US and that this could hurt the country’s future. In a recent interview with Bloomberg, the Citadel CEO said the real loss isn’t the $100,000 cost of an H-1B visa, but it’s when a talented student in India or a math and physics prodigy in China chooses to stay home instead of coming to the US. “Fortunately, we’re in a sector of the economy where a $100,000 one-time cost to hire a person is not going to be...

Stepping out for a guest appearance on ‘The Will Cain Show’ this week, he spoke out against the ‘specialty occupations’ nonimmigrant classification responsible for bringing in highly skilled workers from across the world. “We don’t just need to crack down on illegal immigration, we also need to rein in legal immigration,” he wrote on his official X account, as he shared a video of his Fox News outing. Calling the H-1B visa program a “disaster,” he blamed the category...

The case against Kristin Smart's killer went back before a judge Thursday, nearly three years since his first-degree murder conviction was handed down. An appeal in his case was heard in Ventura County. It argues Paul Flores did not receive a fair trial in Monterey County. Court documents show he's asking that his first-degree murder conviction be overturned or reduced to second-degree murder. The documents cite alleged errors during trial and "reversible misconduct." After submitting 75 pages to the Court of Appeals, Flores’ court-appointed attorney, Solomon Wollack, appeared via Zoom Thursday, presenting three arguments as to why he believes the...

The University of Aberdeen announced that an incredibly rare carving depicting a human face was recently unearthed at the ancient hillfort site of East Lomond in Fife. The five-inch-long object was originally dismissed as insignificant, but closer examination by University of Aberdeen archaeologist Gordon Noble identified faint details, including two eyes, a nose, and even a small bit of hair, that resembled characters from medieval manuscripts. Noble believes that it may not be a depiction of just any ordinary figure but the portrait of an ancient Pict. The Picts were a somewhat mysterious people that inhabited parts of Scotland between...

Today, the adzuki bean (Vigna angularis) is cultivated throughout much of East Asia and appears prominently in a variety of dishes across many cultures. However, according to a statement released by Washington University in St. Louis (WashU), its cultural importance dates back much further than previously thought. WashU researchers and colleagues from Shandong University identified charred adzuki bean remains from the Xiaogao archaeological site in Shandong, China, that date to 8,000 to 9,000 years ago. These examples are at least 4,000 years older than...
