The U.S. Supreme Court lacks jurisdiction to review a New Mexico ruling that ousted Couy Griffin from his seat on the Otero County Commission, a group of attorneys argued this week. The countries' defence ministers signed the document in Latvia's capital Riga. TALLAHASSEE — The Florida House on Wednesday began moving forward with a proposal that would restrict the types of flags that can be displayed at government buildings and schools, including preventing the display of LGBTQ pride flags. The bill (HB 901), sponsored by Rep. David Borrero, R-Sweetwater, and Rep. Randy Fine, R-Brevard County, drew heavy opposition from LGBTQ people, activists and parents and refueled legislative battles that have raged in recent years about LGBTQ-related issues. Supporters said the bill is aimed at preventing “indoctrination” at places such as schools. “This is something that literally is bringing us back to the...

European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said on Friday that the only peaceful solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict included the creation of a Palestinian state, and he suggested this might need to “be imposed from the outside,” without Israel’s agreement. “The actors are too opposed to be able to reach an agreement autonomously,” Borrell said. “If everyone is in favor of this solution, the international community will have to impose it.”

A Southern California fast food franchise owner is the latest to signal that menu prices will go up when the minimum wage for all fast food employees climbs to $20 an hour in April under a new California law. Marcus Walberg, whose family operates four Fatburger restaurants in Los Angeles, recently told Business Insider that he sees no option but to raise prices and make other changes to adapt. “It’s a scary thing because customers are already complaining that prices are too high,” Walberg told the business news outlet.

Using AI and cloud computing, Microsoft was able to identify promising new battery materials for the Department of Energy (DoE) — in a fraction of the time it would usually take. The challenge: Batteries are an essential part of the clean energy future. We need them to power electric vehicles and to store energy from solar and wind. Currently, lithium-ion batteries are our best option for both of these uses, but they aren’t ideal. Because lithium is relatively scarce, it’s also expensive, and the metal is often unethically mined using child labor and environmentally destructive processes. Identifying better battery materials...

ABC legal analyst Sunny Hostin told her co-hosts Friday on “The View” that the United States is still “in the fight of our lives” to save the United States from “the scourge of racism.” Thursday on a CNN town hall, Republican presidential candidate former Gov. Nikki Haley (R-SC) said, “When you look, all men are created equal. I think the intent was to do the right thing. Now, did they have to go fix it along the way? Yes, but I don’t think the intent was ever that we were going to be a racist country.” Hostin said, “What is...

A wise old friend once said to me that if Christianity died out, what would come next would not be atheism but polytheism. That is, instead of worshipping one God, people would start worshipping a whole range of gods. I thought of that yesterday while watching a Brazilian shaman called Putanny Yawanawa performing a native spiritual ceremony onstage at the World Economic Forum in Davos. The leaders onstage all managed to keep a straight face — in fact, they looked deeply humbled and impressed — as Yawanawa did her incantations and blew her sacred breath into their faces. All behaved...

Dailymail.com was asked to leave Nikki Haley's meet-and-greet with voters in New Hampshire on Friday morning and was told it is banned from covering her future campaign events. The ban came after DailyMail.com published a story Friday morning exclusively reporting that Haley falsely denied cheating on her husband when she was accused of engaging in two extramarital affairs during her 2010 South Carolina gubernatorial campaign. The Haley campaign didn't respond to requests for comment on the story even though DailyMail.com gave them 24 hours to do so. On Friday morning, a DailyMail.com reporter and photographer were asked to leave Haley's...

Google has laid off over a thousand employees across various departments since January 10th. CEO Sundar Pichai’s message is to brace for more cuts. “We have ambitious goals and will be investing in our big priorities this year,” Pichai told all Google employees on Wednesday in an internal memo that was shared with me. “The reality is that to create the capacity for this investment, we have to make tough choices.” So far, those “tough choices” have included layoffs and reorganizations in Google’s hardware, ad sales, search, shopping, maps, policy, core engineering, and YouTube teams. “These role eliminations are not...

Explanation: Jupiter, our Solar System's ruling gas giant, is also the fastest spinning planet, rotating once in less than 10 hours. The gas giant doesn't rotate like a solid body though. A day on Jupiter is about 9 hours and 56 minutes long at the poles, decreasing to 9 hours and 50 minutes near the equator. The giant planet's fast rotation creates strong jet streams, separating its clouds into planet girdling bands of dark belts and bright zones. You can easily follow Jupiter's rapid rotation in this sharp sequence of images from the night of January 15, all taken with...
