Waiting for two minutes or longer to clamp the umbilical cord of a premature baby likely reduces the risk of death soon after birth, compared with immediately clamping the cord or waiting a shorter time, according to two companion systematic reviews and meta-analyses. Deferring clamping of the umbilical cord allows blood to flow from the placenta to the baby while the baby's lungs fill with air and is thought to ease the transition into breathing and to reduce the risk of iron deficiency in the infant. The first meta-analysis included data from 21 randomized controlled trials. 6.0% of the babies...

Short sleep lengths, daytime napping and even long sleep lengths have been linked to an increased risk of elevated blood pressure and cardiovascular disease, a new study has found. Using data from the UK Biobank, the study is the first study to demonstrate that independent of other factors, circadian rhythm-disrupting behaviors, including shift work, have an adverse effect on blood pressure regulation. "We found that compromised sleep health or nightshift work are associated with elevated blood pressure in both males and females and across all age groups," Professor Morag Young said. "What we've found is that having circadian rhythms out...

Anime NYC is currently happening in Manhattan’s Javits Center. Tens of thousands of people are expected to attend the three-day anime and general nerdy convention between Nov. 17-19. Some of those people are with the U.S. military. At least two branches of the armed forces are at Anime NYC. Not to sit in on any panels, watch screenings of new anime films or pick up some Gundam model kits — well, not explicitly anyway — but to recruit. The U.S. Army and U.S. Marine Corps both have booths at the convention. The Marines have the flashier convention booth. It’s not...

That’s not freedom. That’s Ron DeSantis’s Florida.” DeSantis’s campaign responded to the ad Sunday, calling it “sheer desperation” from Newsom in a post on the DeSantis War Room account.
