During today’s press conference in which Hollywood actors confirmed that they were going on strike, Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, SAG-AFTRA’s chief negotiator, revealed a proposal from Hollywood studios that sounds ripped right out of a Black Mirror episode. In a statement about the strike, the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) said that its proposal included “a groundbreaking AI proposal that protects actors’ digital likenesses for SAG-AFTRA members.” “If you think that’s a groundbreaking proposal, I suggest you think again.” When asked about the proposal during the press conference, Crabtree-Ireland said that “This ‘groundbreaking’ AI proposal that they gave us...

[Catholic Caucus] Cupich on German processes, same-sex blessings, role of womenCardinal Blase Cupich recently expressed confidence in the intentions behind the German Synodal Way while warning of divisions and praising the pontificate of Pope Francis as “historic” in a carefully-worded interview with German diocesan media. Described by Cologne’s Domradio on June 27 “as a leading voice of the progressive Church in the U.S.A.,” the archbishop of Chicago also spoke about the blessing of same-sex unions as well as the pontificate of Pope Francis.Asked about the controversial German Synodal Way, the 73-year-old cardinal acknowledged that he had no direct firsthand insight...

A homeless, convicted sex offender has been terrorizing women in the East Village – and they’ve reached out to The Post for help. Fritz Marseille — who spent five months in jail last year for allegedly groping two women — hangs out between East 3rd Street and East 5th Street along Second Avenue, allegedly accosting women who ignore his advances, witnesses said. But he took his alleged misdeeds to another level when he lurked behind Kristen Booth last month and declared, “I’m going to f–king rape you,” the shaken digital artist told The Post this week. Booth, 49, who was...

A new report shows that more than a third of America’s nuclear-powered attack submarines are idle. According to a Congressional Research Service report released July 6, 18 of the 49 submarines — or 37 percent — are being repaired or waiting for repairs. The report said that is far above the Navy’s goal of 20 percent. During the first year of the Biden administration, the figure was also at 37 percent before dipping to 33 percent in fiscal year 2022 and then rising again this year.

I promised God, as you recall, in the hospital where I lay nearly dying, that, if I was allowed to live, I would write the things which I most feared to write. snip Ever since I was first conscious, I was aware that I perceived some things differently than did many of those around me. In kindergarten, I realized (without, of course, having the word for this) that I had synesthesia — the condition in which one sense spills over into another; people with this form of perception hear colors, or taste sound, or in other ways activate different senses...

Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott shared some good news on Friday morning — he and his girlfriend, Hana Pugh, are expecting a baby in early 2024. Scott, 39, publicly announced the pregnancy in a series of social media posts. “Baltimore Baby Charm is on the way,” he wrote, before asking followers whether they think the baby will be a boy or a girl. Scott and Pugh have made several public appearances in recent months, a rarity for the very private mayor, who has not brought a partner into the spotlight during his mayoral tenure. She attended the screening of a new...

July 14, 2023 - WASHINGTON - A Florida woman was sentenced today on multiple felony charges, including assaulting law enforcement, related to her actions during the breach of the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. Her actions and the actions of others disrupted a joint session of the U.S. Congress convened to ascertain and count the electoral votes related to the presidential election. Audrey Ann Southard-Rumsey, 54, of Spring Hill, Florida, was sentenced to 72 months in prison after she was found guilty of seven felony charges, including three counts of assaulting, resisting, or impeding officers, three counts of civil...

In Italy today, the number of cities on red alert for extreme heat has climbed from 10 to 15. The warning points to conditions that threaten the whole population, rather than just the vulnerable. Italy's minister for the environment, climate change and energy security, Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, told me that Italy's geographic position means it must accept and adapt to generally hotter temperatures and more frequent and severe extreme weather. He said that in recent years there had been an "explosion" of awareness of climate change among the Italian population as the country is increasingly impacted. "Even if Italy is...

I haven't paid much attention to this for awhile. It is someone too demoralizing, but I see most 2024 candidates are falling over themselves promising to be the ones to send the support that Ukraine needs. I could be wrong, but I thought I remember hearing we had sent $50 billion by the end of 2022. Does anyone know what the figures are by now?

Mayor Eric Adams declared himself “the symbol of black manhood in this city, in this country” during a speech last week at a Brooklyn church, where he again defended his outsized reaction to a 84-year-old Holocaust survivor who dared to question him at a community forum. Hizzoner’s comments came Sunday at the Christian Cultural Center in Starrett City, as he continued to allude to his June 28 exchange with housing-rights advocate Jeanie Dubnau, whom he compared to a plantation owner at the town hall meeting after she “disrespected” him by griping about new rent increases for rent-stabilized apartments citywide. Adams...

On Friday’s broadcast of CNBC’s “Squawk Box,” Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg responded to a question on whether the Biden administration can claim credit for improvements in inflation numbers after previously blaming other factors like Russia and “Putin’s price hike” by stating that “we responded with the recipe of the things that we were doing” while acknowledging there are “a lot of things that go into this.” Co-host Joe Kernen asked, “[I]nflation, it’s coming down now, and the administration and President Biden [are] going to take credit for it coming down. My only question is, whenever we talked about it in...

he issue of declining life expectancy in the country has garnered increased focus in recent times, particularly during the pandemic, where the biggest decline since WWII was observed. With the ongoing decline in life expectancy in the United States, a recent report reveals that Americans were at a disadvantage starting in the 1950s. Unfortunately, the situation has only worsened over time. Furthermore, a recent American Journal of Public Health study highlights over 50 countries with better life expectancy rates than the U.S., and a few states within the U.S. may bear partial responsibility for this trend.

The Toronto Police Service (TPS) is shutting down the licensed bar inside its downtown headquarters that’s served senior officers mostly below the radar for more than 30 years, after a possible connection to a superintendent’s drunk driving crash. A memo went out to all civilian and uniformed senior officers recently that police chief Myron Demkiw’s office has decided not to renew the licence for the bar, which did not serve the rank and file but senior officers could access as a perk. A TPS spokesperson confirmed the move. “The Chief’s Office, in consultation with the Executive Officer Lounge Committee, notified...

LEE COUNTY, Fla. — Chances are, if you watch or read the news, you’ve probably heard the term “Florida Man” before. In fact, it became such a famous headline that it even became a meme. But where did this stereotype of Florida man being the wild, eccentric, larger-than-life image come from? “So that’s what Florida man evokes, its a sort of lawlessness, a sort of eccentricity, and its something that is also pegged to what makes Florida unique as a state,” said Dr. Landon Frim, a Philosophy Professor from Florida Gulf Coast University. As far as you can read into...

The Death Spiral. When companies enter it, I always go back to the legendary quote from Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart (he was offering an opinion in a case regarding hard-core pornography): ''I know it when I see it." I onboarded a new account this week, and one of the first things we did was dump Disney (DIS) . The client had some other long-term winners, and I let those go, but as far as DIS, I couldn't wait to dump that one and put it into one of my beloved preferreds, in this case we chose (PACWP) , PacWest's...

Reservists from the elite Sayeret Matkal commando unit on Friday informed their commander that they intend to stop volunteering for reserve duty, as early as next week, in protest against the legislation of the government’s judicial reform, Channel 12 News reported. The reservists also presented a letter that has already been signed by 170 soldiers in active reserve service, and said that they intend to reach 250 signatures. The reservists made clear that they are aware of the harm they may cause by refusing to serve. "In the current order of the day, we have no other course of action...
