Welp. I guess no one told the illegal aliens bused from New York City to the Canadian border that it’s very cold there and snowy, too. It turns out that Latin Americans don’t much care for winter weather, Canadian-style.It’s a story that sounds like it’s written for the Babylon Bee. Illegal migrants arriving in NYC are offered free bus tickets to the Canadian border if they choose to seek asylum in the country to the north. Many migrants are taking advantage of the offer because of crime, homelessness, and drugs that are making life in that city intolerable for them....

The autoimmune disease multiple sclerosis can take a variety of courses. Determining the current and future course of the disease is important in order to slow down its course as much as possible. Researchers have presented a biomarker whose values in the blood allow such predictions. The researchers focused on a cell component that is measurable in the blood and is characteristic of a certain type of brain cell. These cells, called astrocytes, play a key role in multiple sclerosis (MS) processes, which can lead for example to permanent paralysis and disability. The blood level of this cellular component, called...

While many Americans are wondering how a Chinese spy balloon could have been allowed to cross over the entire length of the United States, Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) is heaping praise on President Biden for waiting until it's spy mission was accomplished before shooting it down. "As a sitting Senator, I had the privilege of being briefed by Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman," Romney boasted. "It was pointed out to me that by allowing China to complete its spy mission we accomplished some important things. First, letting China listen in on our military communications shows them that they have...

The newest vitamin B3 family member, nicotinamide riboside (NR) has been found to have beneficial effects on mitochondria in the human muscle. Currently, mitochondrial dysfunction cannot be treated. Recent findings encourage further investigation of whether this vitamin B3 form could serve as a potential therapeutic option for mitochondrial dysfunction. In a recent twin study, it was found that nicotinamide riboside (NR) increased the number of mitochondria in the muscle after long-term administration. In addition, NR improved the gut bacterial composition and increased the blood NAD+ concentrations. "Our study demonstrated the beneficial effects of long-term supplementation of NR on NAD+ metabolism,...

A single oral dose of the antibiotic azithromycin can reduce the risk of postpartum sepsis and death among women who deliver vaginally by one-third, according to a large multi-country clinical trial, called A-PLUS. Only 1.6% of women in the study who received azithromycin during labor developed sepsis or died within six weeks after delivery, compared to 2.4% of those who received placebo. Azithromycin did not reduce the risk of stillbirth, newborn sepsis or newborn death. Sepsis—a life-threatening complication of bacterial and other infections—is a leading cause of maternal and newborn deaths worldwide, especially in low- and middle-income countries. Azithromycin, an...

[Catholic Caucus] Francis’ Double StandardsFrancis' method of governance is becoming unbearable, writes SilereNonPossum.it (February 2).• Francis uses law and justice “according to convenience” and according to his personal sympathies.• He is intransigent against some [= Catholics] and uses “mercy” toward others [= evil doers].• He is a control freak to whom everything must be submitted but much depends on his mood, even the choice of bishops.• Francis wanted to appoint his watchdog Bishop Domenico Pompili as secretary to the Italian bishops, but Bologna Cardinal Zuppi refused and Francis got angry, “Give Pompili the first big diocese that becomes free,” he...

When she lost her job at Google last month, Jingjing Tan started worrying about her dog, an energetic, 75-pound German shepherd. As a foreign worker living in the U.S. on a temporary work visa, if she couldn’t find a job within 60 days, she feared she might have to return to her home country, China. In big Chinese cities, where tech jobs are, keeping large dogs as pets often isn’t allowed. *** Layoffs have rippled across the tech industry, with more than 257,000 job cuts since last year. *** While there is no reliable way to track how many workers...

Such vast possessions and such successful colonization, which took Russia to the Pacific Ocean, created in the Russian authorities past and present a consciousness typical of the metropolis. Therefore, any secession of former colonies such as Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Georgia, and Ukraine was painful for the imperial consciousness of the Russian authorities.

The “Hippie Jesus" is one of the common misunderstandings of Christ that are circulating in popular culture. People think of Jesus as a laid-back guru who traveled around Israel in this Volkswagen Vanagon, accompanied by twelve dudes in tie-died T-shirts. Jesus taught that all we need is Love, and not to be so uptight, like all those rule-bound priests and scribes. Of course, that view of Jesus is wrong. People adopt it, however, because they misunderstand the nature of Jesus’ conflict with the priests, scribes, and Pharisees that dominated Jewish religious practice in his day. Because Jesus criticizes them for...

(Daily readings from the USCCB)“My heart is moved with pity for the crowd, because they have been with me now for three days and have nothing to eat. If I send them away hungry to their homes, they will collapse on the way, and some of them have come a great distance.” Mark 8:2–3Jesus’ primary mission was a spiritual one. He came to set us free from the effects of sin so that we could enter the glories of Heaven for all eternity. His life, death and resurrection destroyed death itself and opened the way for all who turn to...
