(Daily readings from the USCCB)“Now, Master, you may let your servant go in peace, according to your word, for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you prepared in the sight of all the peoples: a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and glory for your people Israel.” Luke 2:29–32At the time of Jesus’ birth, there was a man named Simeon who had spent his whole life preparing for one significant moment. Like all faithful Jews at the time, Simeon was waiting for the coming Messiah. The Holy Spirit had revealed to him that he would indeed see the Messiah...

My favorite movie is Groundhog Day, and I have made it a personal tradition to watch it on... Groundhog Day, much to my wife's chagrin. This post is in honor of that tradition: It’s Groundhog Day 2023 and here are 17 of the best quotes from the iconic 1993 movie to celebrate the holiday. Occurring every year on February 2, Groundhog Day is a popular North American superstition that revolves around an animal called a groundhog. If the rodent emerges from its burrow and sees its shadow due to sunny weather, it will retreat back to its den and winter...

The archbishop of Canterbury has said he would rather see the Church of England lose its privileged status as the established church of the country than risk the global church fracturing over disagreements on same-sex marriage, the Guardian has been told. Justin Welby, who will crown King Charles in a religious ceremony in May, reportedly made the comment at a private meeting with about a dozen MPs at Westminster on Monday. The MPs raised concerns about the prospect of the C of E offering blessings to same-sex couples who have legally married, but continuing to refuse them a church wedding....

A furry critter in a western Pennsylvania town has predicted six more weeks of winter during an annual Groundhog Day celebration. People gathered Thursday at Gobbler’s Knob as members of Punxsutawney Phil’s “inner circle” summoned the groundhog from his tree stump at dawn to learn if he has seen his shadow — and they say he did. According to folklore, if he sees his shadow there will be six more weeks of winter. If he doesn’t, spring comes early. The “inner circle” is a group of local dignitaries who are responsible for planning the events, as well as feeding and...

As much as I try to stay on top of the news, occasionally a bombshell slips by. One such piece of news was broken a couple of days ago, though for some reason it’s not getting much attention from conservative media. Rumors have spread that Tyre Nichols, the black man who was beaten to death by five black former Memphis police officers, was in a relationship with one of the ex-cop’s baby mama. It started with a Tweet by Sir Maejor: BREAKING NEWS: I am being told that Tyre Nichols was in a relationship with and worked at a Memphis...

President Biden’s approval rating remains mostly unchanged despite a majority of Americans disapproving of the way he has handled the discovery of classified documents at his residence and former office, according to a new poll. The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research poll found that 41 percent of U.S. adults approve of Biden’s performance as president, 2 points lower than the 43 percent recorded in December. That comes as almost 40 percent of respondents said they disapprove of how Biden has handled the classified document disclosures, while 23 percent said they approve and 36 percent said they neither approve...

What's the celebration all about in Minnesota? Did the Vikings win? Twins add a shortstop? The Wild on the road to the Stanley Cup? The answer is not about sports or a drop in crime rates in Minneapolis. The answer is a celebration about abortion, or "reproductive rights" as they call it these days. After Roe was overturned, we knew that states would decide the issue on their own. And so they did. Elections have consequences as we see in a 34-33 party-line vote. And in Minnesota they had a huge celebration to go with it. Not one Democrat had...

The General wasn't advocating war, nor was he predicting war.Gen. Michael A. Minihan, USAF sent a memo to his troops, wanting them to speed up their preparations for potential combat with China. Although U.S. intelligence considers the possibility of war with China to be a decade away, Minihan raised warning signs that China's timeline for taking over Taiwan may be shorter. That's what people who are expected to fight the next war are expected to do: to consider the factors that might lead a warlike country to take more aggressive military action and then to tell American forces to be...

CNN political commentator former Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) said Wednesday on CNN’s “Anderson Cooper 360” that going after President Joe Biden’s son Hunter with information from his laptop that was left in a computer shop is a “dangerous path.” Cooper said, “He has acknowledged that is his laptop, which he hadn’t done before. The information, whether it was legal or not to obtain it, it is out there from now from that laptop. Do you expect these legal moves...

The Fed Goes UnderwaterLosses amid fiscal austerity will put the central bank in a political bind. Before new trillion-dollar federal spending bonanzas became a regular occurrence, the Federal Reserve’s announcement that it lost over $700 billion might have garnered a few headlines. Yet the loss met with silence. Few Americans have noticed the huge increase in both the scale and the scope of the central bank or the dangers that it poses to the American economy. As Fed-driven inflation becomes the Number One political issue in America, that will change. The Fed’s losses owe to a shift in the way it does...

The few wealthy countries pursuing the generation of electricity from wind turbines and solar panels while simultaneously moving to rid the world of fossil fuels have short memories of petrochemical products and human ingenuity being the reasons for the world populating from 1 to 8 billion in less than two hundred years. Renewables may be able to generate intermittent electricity form breezes and sunshine, but they cannot replace what is manufactured from fossil fuels, that are demanded by lifestyles and economies around the world. Efforts to cease the use of crude oil will be the greatest threat to civilization, not...
