The archbishop of Canterbury has said he would rather see the Church of England lose its privileged status as the established church of the country than risk the global church fracturing over disagreements on same-sex marriage, the Guardian has been told.
Justin Welby, who will crown King Charles in a religious ceremony in May, reportedly made the comment at a private meeting with about a dozen MPs at Westminster on Monday.
The MPs raised concerns about the prospect of the C of E offering blessings to same-sex couples who have legally married, but continuing to refuse them a church wedding.
Several MPs broached the question of whether the C of E should retain its status as the established church when it was out of step with the law of the land and with public opinion.

I never thought I would see religious schisms happening , over homosexual marriage and homosexual issues. But it sure seems as if a lot of religious denominations are grappling with the issue of what to do about homosexual marriage.
And the split seems to be , that some want to be liberal and recognize homosexual marriage within the denominations. And more conservative or traditionalist people in the denomination do not want to change the theology to allow for homosexual marriage.
I’m an antidisestablishmentarian, myself.
I was into antidisestablishmentarianism before antidisestablishmentarianism was cool.
Dang it!
But you added the “ism” so you win for size.
What a joke. This heretic ,pervert loving Welby will crown the vapid Charles “king” to convince stupid people that the idiot Charles has the mantle of heaven. Britain has committed cultural suicide and has embraced neo pagan, hedonistic decadence. Nothing good will come out of this devolution.
So would Satan!
He’s about to crown a known adulterer as “defender of the faith.” But who am I to judge?
Regards,
True words. Taking a larger view of the world, one watches as many "denominations" are in schism over a variety of issues, but chief among them is the reading -- or lack thereof -- of Romans 1.
Taking an even larger view of the world, one could use the word "schism" to speak about the various "walk away" political movements, the loss of market share by majors and monopolists as we also "walk away" from the likes of YouTube, or Amazon, and so on. Loss of viewers for Hollywood self-congratualtions. Loss of paying fans for some sports gone "pride" gay. "The center will not hold" but it was in the center where profits were mostly found.
The politicization of almost everything has brought this about. And the financialization of everything is accelerating the walking away.
Given the King Chuck the Green's lunatic remark that he would become "defender of all faiths," we know he stands for none. So Welby merely wants to remain the actor who participates in "another opening, another show." Bleh.
The CoE is already split. The majority of Anglicans, mostly in Africa, have nothing to do with Welby, and refused to attend the last Lambeth conference. The church in UK itself has dwindling membership and low Sunday attendance. It is a dead church walking. Welby’s only course is to maintain institutional denial as long as possible before it all collapses.
Aging Church of England ‘will be dead in 10 years’ (2032)
The Church of England will cease to exist in 10 years as the current generation of elderly worshippers dies, Anglican leaders warned yesterday.

Au contraire: Satan has the most to lose.
How many people are even members anymore?
“My way or the highway.”
Whether C of E is disestablished or split over ‘ssm’ are both in favor of Satan.
I’m an antidisestablishmentarian, myself.
Hold the line
Jesus said ‘Remember Lot’s wife’. The ‘church’ is called the bride/wife. Cannot fulfill the Lot’s wife analogy any clearer.
