The US has suffered nearly 300,000 more deaths than usual in more than two years of the pandemic that cannot be attributed to Covid, with researchers blaming lockdowns and delays to healthcare. Latest official data shows there were 1.26million excess deaths between February 2020 and the end of 2022, of which around 295,000 did not have Covid as their main cause of death on their death certificates. These are thought to be mostly made up of surges in deaths from cancer, heart disease, drug overdoses and firearms during the pandemic, however, a full analysis by the Centers for Disease Control...

What got me thinking about this is...I conduct inspections at gas station/convenience stores. Exxon,Mobil,Chevron,Texaco,Marathon,Shell,etc... Today at two sites, the workers were from Kenya, Africa. Their accents sounded very British to me. But heres the thing..('the thing'..oh crap)...no seriously they were all very intelligent and professional. Well spoken. Respectful. Very pleasant people. They came off in a way that reminded me of graduate students. I was stuck by how much I was caught off guard. One gal told me that the Kenyan Gov't was ruled by the British until recently. She actually knew gov't history of her country! Now...the black (american)...

A coalition of 20 states and a top conservative legal group are suing the Biden administration over its recently expanded humanitarian parole program that allows tens of thousands of migrants from designated countries a month into the U.S., arguing that the program is unlawful. The lawsuit, filed by Texas and America First Legal in the Southern District of Texas, is joined by 19 additional states who are seeking to block the Biden administration’s parole program, which allow up to 30,000 migrants from Haiti, Nicaragua, Cuba and Venezuela into the U.S. each month. The Biden administration announced the program for Venezuelans...

TOKYO -- Market watchers are bracing for the risk of a sharp rise in cotton prices as last year's flooding in Pakistan and concerns about trade barriers in India combine with an improving global economic outlook that could boost clothing demand. Cotton futures have inched higher this month after largely staying in the same territory since November. Friday's close of 86.7 cents per pound in New York was up 4% from the end of 2022. "We've been making long hedges in case of a rally," a trading house representative said in mid-January. One of the biggest concerns involves output in...

Sweden’s Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson is facing mounting pressure over a new controversy involving eel fishing. Kristersson is drawing flak for hiring Peter Magnus Nilsson as a key adviser, a former journalist who was found guilty of illegal eel fishing and lying to police about it. Nilsson was hired last October, a year after he was caught in a raid by the Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management. Kristersson has admitted he knew Nilsson broke the law, but said his behavior was “stupid” and not something that made him unsuitable for the position, according to a BBC report. The...

A 50-year-old man who was accused of stealing three artworks from Greece’s National Gallery in Athens in January 2012 received a suspended prison sentence of six years on Friday. The works stolen included Pablo Picasso’s painting Head of a Woman (1934), Piet Mondrian’s painting Stammer Windmill with Summer House (1905), and Guglielmo Caccia’s sketch St. Diego de Alcala in Ecstasy with the Holy Trinity and the Symbols of Passion. The witches believe that on Halloween, the veil between the living and the dead is at its thinnest and connections can be made to those being mourned or missed. The overwhelming majority of black voters in Georgia said they had a “good” or “excellent” voting experience under a new election reform law that President Biden decried as “Jim Crow 2.0” when it was enacted in 2021. A post-election survey from the University of Georgia released last week found that none of the 364 black voters polled had a “poor” experience at the ballot box. By contrast, 72.6% of the surveyed black voters said their experience was “excellent,” while 23.6% said it was “good” and 3.3% said it was “fair.” The remaining 0.5% said they didn’t know how to characterize...

The Department of Animal Services says at least 13 dogs at the Jurupa Valley shelter have tested positive for Streptococcus zooepidemicus, aka strep zoo, a bacterial respiratory infection. Since the beginning of the year, four dogs have died in their kennels, and a fifth died at the home of an adopter. Lab tests confirmed that the dogs were positive for strep zoo, with additional cases pending lab results. These are the first instances of strep zoo in that facility’s history, officials said. Erin Gettis, Riverside County Animal Services director, said other animal shelters in the area are dealing with their...

Memorial of Saint Francis de Sales, Bishop and Doctor of the Church Mark 3:31–35 Friends, in today’s Gospel, Jesus identifies as his mother and brothers those who do the will of God.The proper attitude in the presence of the saving God is obedience and acquiescence, imitating his moves, responding to his commands, doing whatever he tells us. To live the good life is not finally a matter of autonomy but of obeying commandments: “If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love.”Mind you, listening to...

A study reports the discovery of a compound efficient in the treatment of SARS-CoV-2 that could be broadly applied to treat different variants of the virus. The researchers discovered that the compound piperlongumine (PL), extracted from the long pepper, the natural ingredient used most extensively in Indian medical systems, has a potent antiviral effect in the treatment of SARS-CoV-2 in mice. "We found that PL delays disease progression and reduces lung inflammation in a mouse model mimicking SARS-CoV-2 infection," says Gonçalo Bernardes. "The action of this compound in the organism, which was previously studied in the treatment of cancer, is...

To maintain the appearance of neutrality, Garland may have to.Breaking news! Classified documents were found in the home of former Vice President Pence. These documents were discovered by Pence's own teams. But, if the Biden experience has taught us anything, a search by the FBI may turn up more documents. So what is Merrick Garland to do? Mike Pence very likely may be a presidential candidate for 2024–a candidate who will run against Trump, and potentially Biden. And we know that Garland waited for Trump to announce before appointing a special counsel. Does Garland appoint yet another special counsel...
