A travel writer sees the peaks and valleys during a unique weekly challengeMy husband and I were on a camping trip with our two little girls and a friend. We had just finished Tokopah Falls, a 3.5-mile trek to a beautiful waterfall not far from the base of Mount Whitney. Following the park ranger’s recommendation, we decided to jump from Sequoia National Park to Kings Canyon National Park, and were rewarded with an unexpected bear sighting along the way. A 7.2-mile loop? Animals? Sure – bring it on! The plan was that we’d hike until we found a good spot...

Wild pigs on the Central Coast continue to be a growing problem as they extend their range of damage and county park leaders now looking at hiring a private hunter to help eradicate the problem. “It gets very very frustrating. Our parks are the jewels of our community,” said Mike LeBarre, mayor of King City. LeBarre is referring to San Lorenzo Park in King City which was the latest target of the wild hogs. They ripped up the grass this week in search of grubs, insect larvae hidden beneath the grass. The damage is estimated to be thousands of dollars...

It was announced on Monday, October 10, that the late Queen had approved the appointment of The Very Rev. Dr. David Monteith, Dean of Leicester, as Dean of Canterbury. Dr Monteith is in a same-sex civil partnership with David Hamilton, a counselling therapist working in palliative and bereavement care. Will this not perplex and shock millions of faithful Anglicans across the globe? The cathedral is claimed by the Church of England Establishment to be the mother church of the Anglican Communion, an iconic landmark founded in 597 AD. It is a World Heritage Site unlike any other, having seen some...

With her pioneering work in Feminist Studies over the last 40 years, and her role as a Distinguished Professor Emerita at UCSC, Bettina Aptheker is a famed academic. The title of her latest book, Communists in Closets: Queering the History 1930s-1990s, might make you think of academia, too, and its focus on institutional analysis and the surveying of eras.

ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico — A Las Vegas synagogue that is believed to be the first Jewish place of worship in the New Mexico Territory is back in the hands of the Jewish community. The Albuquerque Journal reported Monday the Las Vegas Jewish Community crowd-sourced enough funds to buy Temple Montfiore last month from the Archdiocese of Santa Fe. One of the oldest Catholic dioceses in the United States, it has been forced to sell properties to help pay a settlement agreement that resulted from a clergy sex abuse scandal. The synagogue was sold to the diocese in the 1950s because...

The nation's highest court is currently unwilling to go beyond overturning Roe.WASHINGTON, D.C. (LifeSiteNews) – The U.S. Supreme Court has declined to hear a case challenging a radical Rhode Island abortion law, rejecting an opportunity to build upon the recent overturn of Roe v. Wade and affirm that the U.S. Constitution recognizes that unalienable rights begin in the womb. In September, Catholics for Life filed a petition with the Supreme Court along with two expectant mothers representing their unborn babies, challenging Rhode Island’s 2019 Reproductive Privacy Act (RPA), which codified the “right to abortion” as defined in Roe and deprived...

I saw an interview with Robert Cahaly, who runs the Trafalgar polling operation, the other day. (It may have been off a Power Line link.) As I recall, he said that he isn’t polling in Florida because he doesn’t think there are any serious races there. I agree. For a time, Democrats believed, or pretended to believe, that retread party-switcher Charlie Crist could seriously challenge Ron DeSantis. In my opinion, that was delusional, and the Dems’ hopes seem to have faded. Here are two data points to support the proposition that anyone running against DeSantis in 2022 has no chance....

[Catholic Caucus]“Listening”, Or: The Rigid And Hateful Blog PostWhen I was a little child, I was taught my prayers, and the Commandments. I was taught about heaven and hell, the serpent and the apple, Noah and the Ark. When I grew up I grow more acquainted with the concept of sin. As temptations came to become a part of my daily life, I already knew what Christianity said about them. Nobody, not as a child or as an adult, ever, taught me to “listen to the Spirit”. The fact is: there is nothing to listen. What there is to do...

Milwaukee-area Catholics gathered Saturday evening at a parish on the northwest side with a message of support for LGBTQ people. The Rev. Greg Greiten, who is openly gay himself, organized the "LGBTQ Mass of Celebration and Inclusion" because it was important for the community to feel welcome in the church, he said. "My first words are: I love you. You are loved. You are beloved. You are holy. You are made in the image of God," he said at the start of his homily. The Mass and subsequent reception at St. Bernadette Parish drew about 100 people, including a handful...

Outgoing Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) said Wednesday on CNN’s “The Lead” that House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) was “giving aid and comfort to the enemy” by saying if Republicans retake the House, they would reconsider aid to Ukraine. Tuesday, McCarthy said, “I think people are gonna be sitting in a recession, and they’re not going to write a blank check to Ukraine.” Anchor John Berman asked, “Do you feel surprised that it made news when Kevin McCarthy suggested that Ukrainian aid may not be as forthcoming if Republicans take control of Congress?”

The Biden administration is privately pushing Arizona leaders to take down its temporary wall along the Mexican border with the promise that the federal government will install a new temporary barrier sometime in 2023, according to a letter obtained by the Washington Examiner. Republican Gov. Doug Ducey’s spokesman told the Washington Examiner on Wednesday evening that Washington’s latest proposal in the fight over securing the border in western Arizona is not something the state will even consider. “The suggestion by any federal bureaucracy, that we take action to make the border easier to cross, is completely unacceptable. Gov. Ducey takes...

Consumer prices were up by 9.1 percent nationally in June. For Austin taco business owners, this means rising costs on everything needed to operate a restaurant.TacosTacos have long been the great Austin equalizer. But now, as with most things throughout the country, inflation has hit this cherished food staple hard. Consumer prices were up by 9.1 percent nationally in June, the highest it has been in 40 years. For taco business owners, this leads to...

It’s fall y’all, and unless you’ve been living under a rock, the demand for pumpkin spice everything is already nearing its peak. And since New Jersey serves both terrific autumn vibes and delicious pizza, why not combine the two? “Uh, what?” is a fair response. But the popular pizza restaurant Talula’s in Asbury Park has doubled down on the overarching fall aesthetic. Their new pie, crudely called a basic b---- pizza, takes their classic Neapolitan-style dough and tops it with smoked mozzarella, ricotta, kabocha (squash), caramelized onion and pumpkin spice candied bacon. The spicy notes of pumpkin spice are peppered...
