ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico — A Las Vegas synagogue that is believed to be the first Jewish place of worship in the New Mexico Territory is back in the hands of the Jewish community.
The Albuquerque Journal reported Monday the Las Vegas Jewish Community crowd-sourced enough funds to buy Temple Montfiore last month from the Archdiocese of Santa Fe.
One of the oldest Catholic dioceses in the United States, it has been forced to sell properties to help pay a settlement agreement that resulted from a clergy sex abuse scandal.
The synagogue was sold to the diocese in the 1950s because there were very few Jewish people in the region. In recent years, the building has been a place of worship for Catholic college students.
When the Las Vegas Jewish Community became aware it was up for sale and that the deadline was in September, they turned to GoFundMe.

Quite a few of the Spaniards who migrated to the New World were Jews or Conversos who converted from Judaism to Catholicism.

Except that many secretly were Jews. They just pretended to be Catholics to avoid the Spanish Inquisition. The Spanish were quite suspicious of Conversos.
Rightly so. The Jews were allied with the Muslims in the conquest and subjugation of the Spanish.
Mainly because the Muslims allowed them to practice their religion, so long as they paid their taxes and acknowledge that the Muslims ran the place. The Spanish Catholics were not so tolerant. Little wonder that the Jews of Spain over 500 years ago favored one side over the other.
The conquest started around the year 711 and there were Jewish combatants who moved into Spain with the Muslims.

Hard to forgive the Visigoths, who had been mercifully let through Rome’s borders as refugees, for killing the Emperor Valens in 378 AD imo. They got what was coming to them.
When I was at Fort Benning during Vietnam with my then-husband, there were radio ads for stores or dealerships with distinctly Jewish names and distinctly Georgia Southern accents. Having gone there from a heavily Jewish city in the north, it tickled me to hear the regional accent adaptation!

Exactly like that! It was heartwarming. Also, I remember the scenes in Driving MIss Daisy, where Jessica Tandy and Dan Ackroyd played a Jewish mother and son with a textile plant in the South.
My father spent most of the war (WWII) in the Carolinas. He learned to speak yiddish with a southern accent, entertaining to friends through the rest of his life.
