  • Supreme Court declines appeal by Texas death row inmate who said jury was racist

    Washington Examiner ^ | October 11, 2022 12:17 PM | by Kaelan Deese, Supreme Court Reporter |
The Supreme Court declined to take up an appeal from a Texas death row inmate who claimed his case was not fairly decided because some members of the all-white jury were opposed to interracial marriage. In an unsigned order, the high court denied the appeal by Andre Thomas, a black inmate who was convicted and sentenced to death in 2005 by a jury in Sherman, Texas, over the murder of his wife, who was white, their biracial son, and her daughter from a different relationship. Three members of the all-white jury that convicted Thomas had previously expressed opposition to interracial...

The Russian leadership is open to a meeting between President Vladimir Putin and US President Joe Biden. If Washington were to offer a meeting at the G20 summit, Moscow would consider it, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Russian state television. According to him, the Kremlin would also be prepared to “listen to any proposals for peace talks” – for example, mediated by Turkey. However, he could not say in advance where this process would lead, Lavrov explained. He then further qualified that there had been no proposals to get in touch with the USA.

Former President Donald Trump's call for a cease-fire in the Russia-Ukraine war and negotiations toward a truce has differed from the stance of some of his supporters and many Republicans. Most GOP members have strongly supported Ukraine since Russian President Vladimir Putin began his country's unprovoked attack in February.Trump has criticized the Biden administration's handling of the conflict."With potentially hundreds of thousands of people dying, we must demand the immediate negotiation of the peaceful end to the war in Ukraine, or we will end up in World War III and there will be nothing left of our planet all because stupid...
  • The Inflation Hydra! Los Angeles Diesel Prices UP 176% Under Biden While Strategic Petroleum Reserve DOWN -34.7%

Inflation is a multi-headed hydra (from Greek Mythology). It is composed of 1) monetary stimulus (that The Fed is slowly withdrawing), 2) massive, reckless Federal spending and 3) Biden’s anti-fossil fuel mandates. So, when the inflation numbers are out later this week, it will be fun to dissect the damage being done to the US economy and middle-class/low-wage workers. Take Los Angeles, for example. The life blood of the shipping industry, diesel fuel, is UP 176% under Biden, despite declining for a short period of time. And the DOE Strategic Petroleum Reserve is DOWN -34.7% under Biden.

Internal divisions are deepening within the EU as countries attempt to lower the price of natural gas while also ensuring they secure enough of it. Germany’s decision to announce a 200-billion-euro aid package to ease its domestic crisis while opposing a price cap has angered some members. EU leaders are meeting again towards the end of the month, and they will aim to find a gas price policy that can please all its members and, most importantly, the sellers…. … As heating season begins, EU member states are turning on each other in their increasingly desperate attempts to secure enough...
  • Biden Cracks Down On Misclassification Of Workers As Independent Contractors

    yahoo "news" ^ | 10/11/22 | Dave Jamieson
The Biden administration introduced a new regulation Tuesday that would make it harder for employers to misclassify workers as “independent contractors” to avoid minimum wage and overtime laws. The proposal from the White House would replace an earlier, more business-friendly rule created by the Trump administration that set looser guidelines around who could be considered a contractor in the workplace. Labor Department officials said the previous administration’s rule increased the likelihood of workers being exploited. Employers often mislabel their workers as contractors in order to evade workplace laws or shift certain costs of employment onto workers. Gig companies like Uber...

Friends, Jesus concludes today’s Gospel by prescribing giving alms as a key to holiness. I’ve quoted to you before some of the breathtaking remarks of saints and popes about almsgiving. Leo XIII says that once the demands of necessity and propriety have been met, the rest of your money belongs to the poor. John Chrysostom says, “The man who has two shirts in his closet, one belongs to him; the other belongs to the man who has no shirt.”The deepest root of all of this is in the prophets, who continually rail against those who are indifferent to the poor....

The U.S. Department of Labor has published a new proposal on how workers should be classified saying that thousands of people have been incorrectly labeled as contractors rather than employees, potentially curtailing access to benefits and protections they rightfully deserve. The reaction in markets for major gig companies was immediate. Shares of Lyft and Uber tumbled about 13%. in early trading. The misclassification of workers has negatively impacted delivery workers, custodians, truck drivers, waiters, construction workers and more, according to the department. “While independent contractors have an important role in our economy, we have seen in many cases that employers...

A video showing a woman in a bikini coming out of a fire truck in front of a California strip club has prompted officials to order an investigation. The video posted to Instagram shows the door to the fire truck slowly open as a woman gingerly climbs out of the vehicle, which was parked in front of The Pink Poodle, and walk into the establishment. “Only in San Jose do you see a stripper come out of a fire truck,” the caption read. “The department has become aware of a concerning video posted on social media,” said San Jose Fire...

The Supreme Court on Tuesday vacated an appeals court decision that required Pennsylvania to count mail-in ballots even if there is no date on the envelope. “The judgment is vacated, and the case is remanded to the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit with instructions to dismiss the case as moot,” wrote Justices Sonia Sotomayor and Ketanji Brown Jackson (pdf), siding with David Ritter, an unsuccessful Republican candidate for a judgeship. They also threw out a U.S. 3rd Circuit Court of Appeals’ ruling that allowed the counting of mail-in ballots in the race that Ritter had sought...
  • The Electric Cars I Most Look Forward to in 2023...These aren't all the EVs that are on the way -- just the most intriguing ones.

About 150 new cars with a plug are coming to US showrooms between now and the end of 2026. That might be a record expansion for the industry -- and a record opportunity for you to either find the perfect EV or get completely overwhelmed. Below are the 18 plug-in cars that I'm most looking forward to in 2023, because they're likely to make a mark on the electric car landscape. This list includes pure electrics and hybrids, but does not get into the weeds on range, as that's becoming less different between pure electric cars at roughly 225-300 miles,...

VIDEOOne must ALWAYS put "reporter" in quotes when discussing any "reporter" working for MSNBC since they are in reality Democrat party operatives. One such operative/"reporter" is Vaughn Hillyard who is clearly RATTLED about the election trends in Arizona. A big complaint by Hillyard is that in the gubernatorial race, the Democrats don't want to go toe to toe with Republican Kari Lake on the "democracy issue." Who wants to tell him the REAL REASON why the Democrat candidate, Katie Hobbs, won't go toe to toe with Kari Lake?

Thousands of officials across the government’s executive branch reported owning or trading stocks that stood to rise or fall with decisions their agencies made, a Wall Street Journal investigation has found. More than 2,600 officials at agencies from the Commerce Department to the Treasury Department, during both Republican and Democratic administrations, disclosed stock investments in companies while those same companies were lobbying their agencies for favorable policies. That amounts to more than one in five senior federal employees across 50 federal agencies reviewed by the Journal. A top official at the Environmental Protection Agency reported purchases of oil and gas...

The topic has been met with some trepidation in the West Wing and senior aides have called around to Biden world allies to seek advice on how to best handle the date that will surely draw significant attention from reporters and Republicans alike [Rare moment of candor from Politco, admitting that the so-called "news" media is a Democrat Party puppet state.]. For now, the plan is likely to downplay the birthday and simply focus on the work, according to those familiar with the discussions.

The Biden administration's border czar traveled to Texas over the weekend, but she evidently wanted to talk about everything but the border. Vice President Kamala Harris attended two events in Austin, including a high-dollar Democratic fundraiser, at which she spoke about abortion, contraception, gay rights, 'voting rights,' and virtually everything under the sun. Except, that is, the Texas-centric fiasco at the Southern border that she's at least ostensibly been tasked with addressing. That she would scrupulously avoid this matter is entirely unsurprising; she's averted her eyes from it as much as possible over the past year-plus, with the exceptions of...

Firefighters responded to a call about an unconscious child at the Happy Smiles Learning Center around 7:30 a.m., Allentown spokesperson Genesis Ortega said. The firefighters’ carbon monoxide monitors alerted them to high levels of the odorless, colorless gas. Further investigation revealed “dangerously high levels” of carbon monoxide, prompting a full evacuation of the building, Ortega said. Every ambulance in Allentown responded the scene, fire Capt. John Christopher told WFMZ. 27 children and staff were taken to local hospitals, all in stable condition. Another 25 children and staff were treated at the scene, Ortega said. The cause of the carbon monoxide...
