Councilwoman Letitia James has filed a personal injury suit against an itinerant laborer after she allegedly injured herself walking into his legally parked truck. The Democratic lawmaker, who makes $122,500 a year as the people’s representative in Fort Greene and Clinton Hill, is seeking an unspecified amount of damages for wounds she claims to have sustained on July 11 when she walked into a four-inch trailer hitch protruding from David Day’s parked car. James sustained “serious, severe and permanent [injuries] to her limbs and body” and “she will be caused to suffer … continuous pain and inconvenience,” according to court...

Far-right conspiracy theorist Alex Jones on Thursday told a jury he’s “done” apologizing for pushing the conspiracy theory that the 2012 mass shooting that killed 20 children and six teachers at Connecticut’s Sandy Hook Elementary School was a hoax. “Is this a struggle session? Are we in China? I’ve already said I’m sorry hundreds of times and I’m done saying I’m sorry,” Jones told a court in his Connecticut defamation trial. Plaintiff attorney Christopher Mattei had asked Jones to “show a little respect” to the bereaved families present in the courtroom after the Infowars owner had ranted about liberals. Mattei...

Polls suggest a coalition led by the far-right is likely to win, with some of its members talking about dropping sanctions against Russia, because of the energy crisis. Italy's favourite to become prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, has been firmly behind Italy's current government's supportive position towards Ukraine. However, her coalition partners Matteo Salvini and Silvio Berlusconi have close personal ties to Mr Putin. Before Moscow invaded Ukraine, 40% of Italy's gas came from Russia. Now, following Western sanctions and diversification, this supply has dropped to around 18%. Voters will head to the polls on 25 September. ...

Thousands gathered in Brussels, Belgium today to demand the government take more action as many struggle to pay bills. Energy prices in Belgium and other European countries have shot up over the past months, partly driven by the fallout of the war in Ukraine. Remember that the corrupt media always side with the people who are perfectly fine with ending those preborn lives. Corporate media outlets were abuzz with excitement on Thursday morning over the scientific confirmation that babies in the womb visibly recoil at the taste of leafy greens such as kale. The English study in question, published on Wednesday, found that babies in the womb have strong, physical reactions to the flavor profiles of the foods their mothers ingest. Thanks to previous scholarship, scientists already knew that unborn infants’ “taste buds develop anatomically at 8 weeks’ gestation and can detect tastants from...

For millions of mothers and fathers each year, going to a doctor’s office to hear their unborn child’s heartbeat is one of the most important milestones in early pregnancy. But prominent Democrat Stacey Abrams publicly claimed ultrasound technology that enables parents to hear that heartbeat is instead a patriarchal plot to control women’s bodies by creating a “manufactured sound.”“There is no such thing as a heartbeat at six weeks,” Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams said during a Tuesday event at the Ray Charles Performing Arts Center in Georgia. “It is a manufactured sound designed to convince people that men have...

In my previous review of the novel Joseph the Huron by Antoinette Bosco, I mentioned briefly a scene in the book describing the capture and torture of an Iroquois prisoner by the Hurons. The details of this scene were drawn from the true story which appeared in the Jesuit Relations. Of course, Mrs. Bosco softened the story somewhat to make it more suitable for her audience of younger readers. When writing the review, I revisited the original account of this prisoner in the Relations. Written in 1639 by an eye-witness—Jesuit Fr. Jerome Lalemant—I recalled the impression the account had made...

Sweden, which has a population of around 10 million, has the highest per-capita number of deadly shootings of 22 European countries. Forty-seven people have been shot dead so far this year, which, while far from American levels of gun homicide, is extreme for Europe. Other European countries have come to look at Sweden with horror. It may be shocking for Americans to learn that in Sweden—the land of IKEA, Spotify and Greta Thunberg—all of this is going on. Perhaps the reason you don’t know about it is because of the uncomfortable reality of how we got here.Among shooting suspects, 85...

Joe Biden and other world leaders held a donor conference Wednesday in New York for the Global Fund Conference. The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria raised $14.25 billion. This was the highest amount ever pledged for the health organization but it fell short of its $18 billion goal. The United Kingdom and Italy said they would announce their pledges at a later time. Joe Biden generously pledged $6B on behalf of the United States. Your tax dollars at work. The Global Fund has a record of decades of progress against the diseases but was set back by the COVID...

Walt Disney World used to be the place where memories were made and dreams were realized. But has the magic faded away? Park-goers are increasingly complaining about dirty facilities, broken-down rides, and prices that seem to come from a galaxy far, far away.“Some rides are just a straight mess,” wrote one reddit user. “Rides are also down a lot. It’s been lacking since they reopened and I don’t expect it to change anytime soon.”He’s not the only one—in fact, there’s an entire reddit channel called “Disney lacking” where visitors go to complain about the state of the park. Here’s another...

Last week, I discussed the nature of tactical nuclear weapons. They are built for tactical effect, not strategic effect. Strategic nuclear weapons, such as the ones dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, can devastate a large area, with both the blast and the nuclear fallout. The blast area would be devastated, and the fallout would increase the lethality and carry it a significant distance downwind. However, it must be remembered that regardless of casualties, neither city was completely abandoned, and both were populated and functioning at a reasonable level about a year after the bombs were detonated. The power of tactical...

With several fentanyl-related overdoses recently — including a fatal OD at Bernstein High School — the Los Angeles Unified School District is taking action. Superintendent Alberto Carvalho announced Thursday that naloxone, also known as Narcan, will be made available at all K-12 schools in the coming weeks, the LAUSD said in a press release. “We have an urgent crisis on our hands,” Carvalho said in the release. “Research shows that the availability of naloxone along with overdose education is effective at decreasing overdoses and death — and will save lives. We will do everything in our power to ensure that...

In a large clinical trial that directly compared four drugs commonly used to treat type 2 diabetes, researchers found that insulin glargine and liraglutide performed the best of four medications to maintain blood glucose levels. While there is general agreement among health care professionals that metformin combined with diet and exercise is the best early approach in diabetes care, there is no consensus on what to do next to best keep high blood glucose in check. The study enrolled 5,047 people with type 2 diabetes who were already taking metformin. Three groups took metformin plus a medicine that increased insulin...

A team of scientists led by Duke-NUS Medical School have identified an important pathway that gets disrupted in the advanced form of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease known as non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH)—and intervening with a naturally-occurring compound known as spermidine partially fixes the problem. "Currently, there is no pharmacological therapy for NASH, with several drugs showing only limited efficacy in clinical trials, so there is an urgent need to better understand the molecular mechanisms that underlie it," said the study's first author Dr. Zhou Jin. Dr. Zhou, senior author Professor Paul Michael Yen from the CVMD Program, and their colleagues in...
