Democratic Party would be wise to emulate. One political writer recently argued that the Colorado governor was a "model of how you can build a coalition of the normal and decent." It's true that Polis was one of the first Democrats to shed the hysterical federal COVID regime. And his occasional pushback against fringe progressive economic ideas -- the norm among Western Democrats not that long ago -- certainly makes him seem less radical. Yet his support for what is likely the most extreme abortion law in America, maybe the world, should put an end to any talk about national...

It used to be that a Hawaii seat in the U.S. Congress didn’t come open all that often. It’s prestigious, it pays handsomely, there are no term limits and it’s nearly impossible to lose reelection. Also, franking privileges! But over the last two decades Hawaii has elected nine House members including two who served, left office and then went back to D.C. again: Ed Case and Colleen Hanabusa. The expectation that U.S. Rep. Kai Kahele is poised to leave Washington after just one term in an effort to move into the governor’s quarters at Washington Place has at least three...

A Iraq War veteran accused of defrauding donors out of $350,000 (£268,747) in a bid to build a southern border wall has now agreed to plead guilty, according to a court filing. Brian Kolfage, of Miramar, Florida, was indicated in August 2020 alongside former Donald Trump aide Steve Bannon for allegedly scraping off the top of millions they raised to privately build the border wall. Of the $25m (£19m) in GoFundMe donations, Mr Kolfage allegedly took $350,000 and Mr Bannon took $1m, prosecutors said. Both were charged with conspiracy to commit fraud with a third person, Timothy Shea. As Law&Crime...

Beverly Hills’ only gun shop, Beverly Hills Guns, received an order on April 7 advising the shop that it has 60 days to close. Store owner Russell Stuart told Breitbart News the order came from property management. He recounted that his secretary received an envelope and walked to Stuart with sorrow in her eyes. Stuart opened the envelope and read the order. Beverly Hills Guns has been in existence for two years, at the same address, with zero issues. Stuart explained that the order to shutter the current store means he will have to find a new location, sign a...

The great debates of our time are not exclusively those hard-hitting ones affecting human anthropology and political community -- how many genders exist, what criteria we should look for in prospective immigrants, and so forth. Certainly, many of our most notable debates do implicate those most foundational rifts. But some of our other most politically urgent and galvanizing disputes revolve less around substantive questions, such as the nature of justice, than they do around one of the oldest procedural questions in the history of political science: "Who decides?" A look around the world at this present juncture suggests an emerging...

WASHINGTON (AP) — Tearfully embracing a history-making American moment, Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson said Friday her confirmation as the first Black woman to the Supreme Court showed the progress of America, declaring, ″We’ve made it — all of us.” Jackson delivered emotional remarks on the sunny White House South Lawn a day after the Senate approved her nomination, saying, it was a moment the entire country could be proud of. “We have come a long way toward perfecting our union,” she said. “In my family, it took just one generation to go from segregation to the Supreme Court of the...

Wisconsin's Kenosha County executive flipped red for the first time in decades after the city gained widespread attention amid damaging riots and the Kyle Rittenhouse trial. Voters elected Samantha Kerkman on April 5th as the county executive. The race was described as nonpartisan, but Kerkman had the backing of Republicans and serves as a Republican state representative. Her opponent, Rebecca Matoska-Mentink, is a Democrat and serves as the Clerk of Courts. It is the first time a woman will serve in the position and the first time since at least 1998 that a Republican has been elected. The Associated Press...

LONDON (Reuters) - Asset owners managing more than $10.4 trillion have urged governments not to let worries about security of fossil fuel supplies impede the transition to greener energy needed to limit catastrophic climate change. With governments scrambling to replace Russian oil and gas supplies after the invasion of Ukraine, United Nations climate scientists issued new warnings this week on the need to quickly scale up renewable energy and roll back support for emissions-intensive fossil fuels. The Steering Group of the Net-Zero Asset Owner Alliance, which counts some of the world's largest pension schemes and insurers as members, said on...

NATO estimates that Russia has lost 7,000 to 15,000 troops during the six-week war — a startling number — while Ukraine puts the toll at 18,600. Those figures rival, if not exceed, the 14,453 lost during the Soviet Union’s roughly 10-year war in Afghanistan and the 11,000 Russian service members who died in the two Chechen wars. Russia puts the official military death toll of the Ukrainian campaign at 1,351. [Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry] Peskov vaguely discussed the possibility of ending the war in Ukraine.... “Our military are doing their best to bring an end to that operation,” he told the...
