Angry mobs stormed various government buildings in Lima, Peru, on Tuesday night, attempting to burn down the Superior Court of Justice of Lima and fighting police with bricks and sticks. The violent protests followed a turbulent 24 hours in which communist President Pedro Castillo abruptly announced a “curfew” stripping citizens of their constitutional rights, then repealed the curfew when thousands disobeyed it. The curfew, Castillo claimed, was an attempt to subdue nationwide protests against skyrocketing gasoline and food prices, an increasingly common phenomenon in the world’s most vulnerable economies. Outraged political observers told local media that the curfew was baffling...

Wisconsin’s Waukesha School Board will add new members to its ranks after Tuesday’s election saw all three Republican-backed candidates win, unseating two incumbents. The Republican sweep comes as critical race theory and gender ideology in schools have brought parents into the process to fight back.

Tiger Woods has his first birdie of the day. Playing the 180-yard par-3 sixth, Woods hit a spectacular 6-iron that dropped just two feet from the hole. There would be no lip out this time. Six players are under par in the tournament and Woods is now one of them after five straight pars followed by the birdie. If there was any doubt about the state of Woods’ game after the long layoff and recovery from injury, so far, so good.

The U.S.-led push garnered 93 votes in favor, while 24 countries voted no and 58 countries abstained. A two-thirds majority of voting members in the 193-member General Assembly in New York - abstentions do not count - was needed to suspend Russia from the 47-member Geneva-based Human Rights Council. Likening "unfair and deceptive" firearms advertising to that of tobacco products, gun safety advocates Thursday asked US regulators to crack down on the industry. A coalition of three groups asked the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), which regulates advertising, to "investigate and regulate the gun industry's unfair and deceptive advertising," according to their 40-page petition. "The FTC is failing consumers, failing our democracy, and failing the millions of Americans who have lost their lives or their loved ones to gun violence," the petition said. "No industry -- regardless of its political clout -— should be immune from scrutiny of its marketing...

Researchers at Colorado State University are predicting a very active 2022 Atlantic season, with 19 named storms. The average for named storms during the Atlantic hurricane season (June 1 through November) is 14.4. The initial forecast from the CSU Tropical Meteorology Project calls for nine hurricanes and four major hurricanes, classified as at least Category 3 storm with sustained winds of 111mph. Seasonal forecasts from CSU were started 39 years ago by meteorology professor William Gray, who died in 2016. Of note, the CSU team puts a high probability of a major hurricane making landfall in the U.S. They said...

Inevitably, last weekend’s horrendous fusillade of bullets on a downtown Sacramento street that left six people dead and at least a dozen wounded generated demands for new gun controls in state that already has the nation’s most restrictive firearms laws. However, if anything, what happened just two blocks from the state Capitol underscores the folly of believing that gun violence can be meaningfully reduced by trying to choke off the supply of firearms — any more than the prohibition of liquor or the war on drugs succeeded. The state’s gun laws have hassled law-abiding hunters and gun hobbyists and some...

There are widespread reports that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is scheduled to arrive in Taiwan on Sunday, which some are still chalking up to “rumor” given that neither Taipei officials nor Pelosi’s office have confirmed the trip, which would be the first time since 1997 that a US House speaker visited the island (when Republican Newt Gingrich did). Beijing was quick to slam the trip, urging the US to cancel it immediately, with Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian saying China opposes all forms of such official interaction between the US and Taiwan. He lodged official protest, saying it would...

At the very last minute, Georgia’s corrupt Governor and Lieutenant Governor stepped in and blocked an election integrity bill that would make major positive changes to the state’s election process. Garland Favorito at Voter GA reported moments ago: A key integrity provision to unseal Georgia election ballots was blocked at the last minute on Sine Die by Gov. Brian Kemp and Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan. Duncan prevented the Senate from confirming House changes to SB89 which included language to unseal Georgia election ballots and improve ballot chain of custody procedures. SB89 language would have allowed counterfeit ballots to be detected...

Gov. Andy Beshear of Kentucky has vetoed a bill banning transgender athletes from competing in sex-segregated sporting events. Beshear, a Democrat, refused to sign the bill Wednesday after claiming it was most likely unconstitutional. Beshear claimed the legislation "discriminates against transgender people" and therefore would not hold up in court. The Republican-dominated state legislature can force the bill through with a majority vote in both houses, which is expected to happen next week.

Twitter founder Jack Dorsey has admitted he regrets his involvement in creating a centralised internet."The days of usenet, irc, the web...even email (w PGP)...were amazing," he said in a tweet on Sunday."Centralizing discovery and identity into corporations really damaged the internet. I realize I'm partially to blame, and regret it."As Affirm CEO and co-founder Max Levchin points out in replying to Dorsey's tweet, the internet "changed from arthouse to blockbuster because it needed to gain an audience and make money".Dorsey continued saying that "perhaps greater emphasis on protocol first and then interface would have helped"."I agree there was less technology...
