UNITED NATIONS, April 7 (Reuters) - The United Nations General Assembly on Thursday suspended Russia from the U.N. Human Rights Council over reports of "gross and systematic violations and abuses of human rights" by invading Russian troops in Ukraine.

The U.S.-led push garnered 93 votes in favor, while 24 countries voted no and 58 countries abstained. A two-thirds majority of voting members in the 193-member General Assembly in New York - abstentions do not count - was needed to suspend Russia from the 47-member Geneva-based Human Rights Council.

Suspensions are rare. Libya was suspended in 2011 because of violence against protesters by forces loyal to then-leader Muammar Gaddafi.

It'll be interesting to see how many tout this as a rousing condemnation given how often the Human Rights Council was denigrated as a joke on this very forum in the past (especially seeing as how current members of the "Human Rights" Council include Sudan, Venezuela, Libya, Pakistan, China, Cuba, Mexico, Bolivia, the UAE, and Somalia.

The full list of votes, for what it's worth:

Bravo. Russia needs to be isolated like the NORKS. Putin is lying to his citizens and they will suffer until Putin is dealt with. harshly

Some of the nations are black, neither green, yellow, or red. What’s up with those?

I’m sure Vlad is devastated. Who wants a country like Russia giving advice on human rights anyway? It’s like asking Jeffrey Epstein to give advice on teen parenting.

This seems quite significant to me and a HUGE Putin temper tantrum is taking place right now. For the UN to show teeth like this is surprising.

How will Russia lash out at the UN? I expect something significant like attacking Estonia or scrapping the Iran Nuke Deal.

I completely agree. The problem will be that the three (maybe 2.5) are nuclear-armed. Should they form an alliance after Russia is sequestered, ALL nuclear countries should proclaim that if they use them, they will be obliterated. We could call our alliance NUTO.

Wow, 82 countries did not support this inspite of the obvious heavy hand that the “global community” applied. I’m sure thr headlines won’t reflect this but that is not a resounding win at all. It suggests a shifting of the world balance. Doesn’t support the narrative.

Wow. The UN didn’t side with a dictator for a change. Call me shocked!

Russia should be kicked out of the UN by the General Assembly where there is no veto.

Of course, isolate them until there is a regime change.

I’m not sure. No vote made whatsoever, perhaps (not even an abstention)?

What regime change? 10 years ago 90% of Russians were pro-American, now 95% want to see you dead. Why Putin should be a problem from their perspective?

I see no point in the UN if a country can go into another country uninvited and massacre the citizens and destroy the towns.

What say you?-)
