The economic sanctions and boycotts directed at Putin’s Russia have been and will continue to be a complete failure. They may cause an economic slowdown in Russia, even a significant one. Aeroflot may stop flying outside the country. The French may seize the oligarchs’ floating brothels disguised as yachts, and Putin’s mistresses may miss their latest designer gowns from the Paris fashion shows. At the corner grocery store in Moscow, the shelves may be more even bare than usual. The sanctions will be “successful” only in that way. But these sanctions will not stop one bullet from being fired in...

"Sorry to be a free speech absolutist."

If you have been troubled by the rapidly declining claims for the efficacy of the COVID vaccines and boosters or by the rapidly rising reports of problems with the vaccines and the boosters, you might be interested to know how it came about that COVID did not panic chiropractors. It's a fascinating story, and I was privileged to learn it firsthand. I enrolled in chiropractic college just in time to get a powerful lesson in one chapter of that amazing story. A contingent of students who had completely recovered from childhood polio under chiropractic care enrolled around the same time...

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The Florida Senate passed a voting law package Friday that was pushed by Gov. Ron DeSantis and would create a police force dedicated to pursuing election crimes. The chamber approved the bill on a party lines vote with nearly all Republicans in support. House lawmakers are considering companion legislation. DeSantis, a Republican, proposed the need for an election police unit last year, citing unspecified allegations of fraud that have gained traction in parts of the GOP following former President Donald Trump's false claims that his reelection was stolen. The governor, who is running for reelection and considered...

**SNIP** Unusually, resident Joe Biden had to draw those lines with fellow Democrats. Defund the police? Forget about it, Biden said Tuesday night. With crime on the increase around the nation – making for a nervous midterm electorate – the answer is to fund the police, Biden said. He also said very pointedly that he is a capitalist, albeit one who thinks big corporations should “pay their fair share" in taxes. On immigration, Biden called for reform – while also saying that those who "are not legitimately here can be sent back" to their home countries. He also made a...

CNN International, the global arm of CNN, ABC and CBS News will stop broadcasting in Russia, after the Kremlin introduced a new law in the country that could jail anyone intentionally spreading 'fake' news. Bloomberg News, the BBC and Canada's CBC also said they were temporarily suspending the work of their journalists inside Russia. Russian officials have said that false information has been spread by enemies such as the United States and its Western European allies in an attempt to sow discord among the Russian people.

Pfizer and Moderna, manufacturers of the two most popular used vaccines in the United States and much of the rest of the world, are expecting to bring in $51 billion in vaccine sales this year, according to earnings statements published by the companies. Pfizer expects to lead the way, with $32 billion in expected sales, with Moderna projecting $19 billion in revenue from its Covid shots. Almost all of these sales are coming from the developed world, with major nations like the U.S., the UK, Germany and others having surplus of vaccines while many developing countries struggling to get their...

President Joe Biden took a dig at West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin in a new interview – pointing to the stalled Build Back Better plan's $500 billion in climate programs despite Manchin's gripes. Biden made the comment to with historian Heather Cox Richardson, speaking in front of a crackling fire in the China Room of the White House, when he brought up Manchin while defending his $1.8 trillion plan, which died at the end of 2021 with little movement since. He pitched individual programs in his State of the Union, and rolled out a new 'Building America Better' rebrand on...

US Sen. Lindsey Graham called on Russians to assassinate President Vladimir Putin on Thursday night, as Ukraine pleaded with the West to fight the “nuclear terror.” Graham (R-SC), 66, made the call to action on Twitter as he compared Putin to Roman dictator Julius Caesar and Nazi leader Adolf Hitler. “Is there a Brutus in Russia? Is there a more successful Colonel Stauffenberg in the Russian military?” Graham wrote. “The only way this ends is for somebody in Russia to take this guy out. You would be doing your country — and the world — a great service.” Moments before...

@TomRtweets Video suggests Russian advance forces at Hostomel were annihilated last night. Half of them don't appear to even have been able to dismount from their vehicles. When entire platoons get wiped out it's going to be hard for Russians to spin to families that the war is going well.

WASHINGTON (AP) — From the earliest days of his first presidential campaign, Donald Trump aggressively challenged the pillars of Republican foreign policy that defined the party since World War II. He mocked John McCain's capture during the Vietnam War, validated autocrats with his platitudes, questioned longtime military and security alliances and embraced an isolationist worldview. And to the horror of many GOP leaders at the time, it worked, resonating with voters who believed, in part, that a bipartisan establishment in Washington had brokered trade deals that hurt American workers and recklessly stumbled into so-called “forever wars.

The war in Ukraine is still in its early stages, but Russia has likely already lost. The famous war theorist Carl von Clausewitz told us that “war is the continuation of politics by other means.” The key word here is “means.” In other words, wars should have a clear political objective on what the use of force is supposed to achieve. Vladimir Putin’s war aims seem muddled. Similarly, the West’s retaliatory economic sanctions attempt to use economic coercion to achieve a political end (Russian policy change). However, in applying violence or economic coercion, humans, even though the stakes are usually...

The death of a Tasmanian father of four who collapsed while on a family holiday was caused by side effects of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine, a coroner has found. Ian William McDonald Reed, 44, had a headache for four days after receiving the vaccine in July last year. He was holidaying with his family on Tasmania's east coast when he suddenly collapsed on July 13. Mr Reed was airlifted to hospital where doctors discovered intracerebral haemorrhage - a type of stroke involving a blood vessel rupturing and bleeding inside the brain and abnormal blood clotting. Despite neurosurgical intervention, Mr Reed...

Benzodiazepines are effective and widely used drugs for treating states of anxiety and sleep disorders. While short-term treatments are considered safe, their long-term intake can lead to physical dependence and, particularly in the case of older people, to cognitive impairments. The mechanisms by which benzodiazepines trigger these changes had previously been unknown. Researchers have now been able to demonstrate in an animal model that the active ingredient leads to the loss of neural connections in the brain. A key role is played by immune cells of the brain known as microglia. Benzodiazepines bind to a specific protein, the translocator protein...
