“Joseph Stalin, second leader of the Soviet Union, died on 5 March 1953 at the Kuntsevo Dacha, aged 74, after suffering a stroke. He was given a state funeral, with four days of national mourning declared. His body was subsequently embalmed and interred in Lenin's & Stalin's Mausoleum until 1961. Nikita Khrushchev, Georgy Malenkov, Vyacheslav Molotov and Lavrentiy Beria were in charge of organizing the funeral.” (Wikipedia)

1) In 1956, Khrushchev went before the Duma to renounce the untold violence done the military and people of the Soviet Union by Joseph Stalin.
2) “In 1954, Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev gave Ukraine a gift: Crimea. At the time, it seemed like a routine move, but six decades later, that gift is having consequences for both countries”.
(Khrushchev born near, and raised in, Ukraine).

Nikita Khrushchev, Malenkov, Molotov, Beria...
Kind of scary: With the exception of Beria, those were household names when I was growing up!

I recall my HS history teacher (Mr. Herzog) telling us about that. He said that Stalin got kicked out when another student mistakenly tried to grab Stalin’s bread. He stabbed the students hand to the table with a fork (knife?) yelling “That’s MY bread!”

While US celebrated with free Borscht, in Soviet Union they mourned so much that
“In the public’s efforts to pay their respects to Stalin, a number of people were crushed and trampled to death.[16] Khrushchev later provided an estimate that 109 people died in the crowd, although the real number of deaths may have been in the thousands.[17][18] “

That doesn’t tell the half of it. He reularly kidnapped young, pretty girls on the streets of Moscow, took them home, and raped them. Some of the ones who resisted he killed and buried in his garden. Some years later, his house was repurposed as the Tunisian (I think) embassy. They discovered numerous sets of skeletal remains of young women buried in the garden.

Great movie - lots of historical license taken, but captures the Soviet mindset of the era (IMHO). Jason Isaacs as Zhukov was great!
Best of Marshal Zhukov
