It all began 42 years ago — Ted Turner’s creation of a 24/7 news network that would exist on something called cable TV. Few believed it could succeed. And, for its first decade, CNN largely chugged along but wasn’t seen as a game-changer or a true competitor to big broadcast news entities based in New York in the form of CBS, NBC and ABC. That all changed when war broke out between the United States and Iraq in 1991. On the night war exploded over Baghdad, CNN was the only news organization that was able to broadcast from the city...

Donald Trump's former national security adviser on Sunday accused Beijing of staging the 'biggest land grab in history' with its territorial encroachment on the South China Sea. Beijing has laid claim to a vast majority of the waters there, and China's aggressive buildup in military presence and increased exercises in the region has served to alarm and anger US allies there as well as American officials at home. Retired Lieutenant General H.R. McMaster made the stark warning about an increasingly 'aggressive' China after troublesome technical issues led to his appearance on CBS News' Face The Nation to be delayed by...

On Friday, following co-host Whoopi Goldberg’s incendiary comments about the Holocaust earlier in the week, “The View” co-host Sara Haines ripped people who felt that Goldberg’s two-week suspension from the show was insufficient punishment, pontificating, “To learn from a moment is all we can ask of anyone. And prioritizing punitive measures at the expense of the message/issue (and teaching moment) are misguided.” Prior to that Instagram message, Haines had posted a photograph of her and Goldberg snapping a selfie on the set of the show, captioning it, “This just popped up and warmed my heart. That’s my Whoops!!!!” as The...

The financial markets are in upheaval, sending waves of uncertainty through the economy and almost certainly through your home. Inflation is raging. Consumer spending is falling. Three-quarters of Americans say that they are suffering from “COVID news fatigue,” impatience with the ceaseless worry about the virus. The two parties are fighting more than ever. Sensible people are raising the specter of “civil war.” Sober people are worrying about real war with Russia and maybe someday with China. And yet GDP is rising by an annual rate of 6.7...
