For years an obscure doctor hailing from Australia’s hardscrabble west coast watched in horror as ulcer patients fell so ill that many had their stomach removed or bled until they died. That physician, an internist named Barry Marshall, was tormented because he knew there was a simple treatment for ulcers, which at that time afflicted 10 percent of all adults. In 1981 Marshall began working with Robin Warren, the Royal Perth Hospital pathologist who, two years earlier, discovered the gut could be overrun by hardy, corkscrew-shaped bacteria called Helicobacter pylori. Biopsying ulcer patients and culturing the organisms in the lab,...

From almost the moment the COVID-19 pandemic broke out in the Chinese city of Wuhan, the medical-research establishment in Washington and London insisted that the virus had emerged naturally. Only conspiracy theorists, they said, would give credence to the idea that the virus had escaped from the Wuhan Institute of Virology. Now, a string of unearthed e-mails — the most recent being a batch viewed by the House Oversight and Reform Committee and referred to in its Jan. 11 letter — is making it seem increasingly likely that there was, in fact, a conspiracy, its aim being to suppress the...

Thierry Bonaventura, communication manager of the General Secretariat of the Synod of Bishops, told CNA on Jan. 19 that the website was not promoting the group. “I would rather speak of ‘sharing,’ as the title of the website,” he said. Bonaventura pointed out that the “About” section of Synodresources.org emphasizes that the website is “a...

MINEOLA, N.Y. (AP) — A New York judge ruled Monday that the state’s mask mandate can’t be enforced, after it was reinstituted by Gov. Kathy Hochul over concerns about a winter surge of coronavirus cases. State Supreme Court Judge Thomas Rademaker said in his decision that the state Department of Health didn’t have the legal authority to implement the mandate, and that it was up to the state Legislature to do so if needed. The mandate “is a law that was promulgated and enacted unlawfully by an executive branch state agency, and therefore void and unenforceable,” the judge said. The...

Republican members of Congress are accusing President Joe Biden of targeting Americans seeking religious exemptions from the COVID-19 vaccine. “Your administration’s attempt to use the power of the federal government to single out Americans who object to the COVID-19 vaccine on religious grounds is inexcusable and must be withdrawn,” reads the letter, first obtained by The Daily Signal. The letter to Biden builds on a Jan. 11 report from The Daily Signal that the Biden administration is testing out a policy in a small federal agency, the Pretrial Services Agency for the District of Columbia, that would likely serve as...

Joe’s numbers are in the tank. Kamala’s are under the tank. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s are lost somewhere in an abandoned exploratory tunnel excavated by Elon Musk’s Boring Company. Every psephologist in Alpha Centauri expects the Democrats to lose the House in a historic tsunami of red redress. The Democrats will lose 40, 50, maybe 60 seats. Some are predicting 70 seats will switch from blue to red in the House. The Senate is more dicey, but more and more observers believe that the GOP will flip the Senate as well. But remember the premise. Elections are only legitimate if...

CNN chief White House correspondent Kaitlan Collins said Monday on CNN’s “The Lead” that it was “pretty clear” President Joe Biden knew he was on a microphone when he called Fox News White House correspondent Peter Doocy a “stupid son of a bitch.” Collins said, “We should note, he was speaking on a microphone, he had just made remarks to the room for about 10 or so minutes on this Competitive Council that they have formed here at the White House, and was pretty — it seemed pretty clear he knew he was on a mic, Jake.”

Many have cast doubt on her Covid explanation. Vegas journalist Scott Roeben, who broke the story of her residency, claimed she was insisting on tearing out the sound system at Caesar's Colosseum theater and installing her own. 'Apparently, Adele and her team refused to use the house equipment in The Colosseum,' said Roeben. 'The theatre has a massive video screen, very high tech, but Adele's team insisted upon an entirely new system – a larger screen, essentially built a few inches in front of the existing screen. 'Such demands not only drive up production costs but, at a time when...

The New York State Supreme Court on Monday struck down the Hochul Administration’s statewide mask mandate as unconstitutional and a violation of state law. Canadians will likely experience shortages of some food items and increased prices as the Omicron COVID-19 variant snags supply chains and a vaccine mandate takes effect for cross-border truckers, according to industry experts. However, they say that Canadians should not worry about food availability and that no one needs to panic buy. “There is food on the grocery shelves,” said Michelle Wasylyshen, spokesperson for the Retail Council of Canada, which represents big-box grocery stores in the country. She said, though, that there could be shortages of certain products, such as soups, cereals, fresh fruits and vegetables, and meats.
