The Senate passed a standalone continuing resolution aimed at averting a government shutdown on Thursday, which will keep the government funded until December. The House is expected to easily pass the measure later in the day ahead of current funding expiring at midnight. The stopgap bill includes language to keep the government funded through Dec. 3 — in addition to disaster relief funding and funding to aid with the resettlement of Afghan refugees. Its passage comes after Senate Republicans blocked a House-passed short-term spending bill that included language to raise the debt ceiling, saying they will not support increasing the...

The number of U.S. workers who filed for unemployment rose above expectations last week, hitting the highest level in over a month and casting doubt on the strength of the labor market recovery. First-time filings for unemployment insurance—a proxy for layoffs—came in at 362,000 for the week ending on Sept. 25, an increase of 11,000 from the previous week, the Labor Department said in a statement (pdf). That’s the highest number of weekly claims since the week of Aug. 21, when they reached 354,000. The consensus forecast cited by FXStreet was for 335,000 claims. “Negative surprise alert: New jobless claims...

Police are searching for a group of three young men involved in at least three random assaults over a roughly four-hour span in Brooklyn Tuesday, and they're hoping surveillance photos will lead to arrests. The first incident in the crime spree happened just before 4:30 p.m. in front of 2428 East 27th Street in Sheepshead Bay, where an 81-year-old man was walking when an unknown individual approached and asked, "Where is the B44 bus?" As the victim began to give directions, the individual punched him in the face before fleeing southbound, on foot, along East 27th Street towards Avenue Y.

The mainstream media is in a panic and looking for excuses for the news that the FBI was involved in orchestrating the Jan 6 riot. Now their narrative has hilariously shifted from “there was no FBI involvement in Jan 6” to the FBI being involved is “kind of normal.” Besty Woodruff Swan of Politico defended the FBI having informants among the Proud Boys who took part in the Capitol storming on MSNBC on Wednesday. “Having informants at the sites of crimes is part of the way the law enforcement works,” Woodruff said. “It’s kind of normal.” As we previously reported,...

Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) on Wednesday proposed legislation which would require proof of a coronavirus vaccination or a negative coronavirus test in order to fly domestically ahead of the holiday season. “We know that air travel during the 2020 holiday season contributed to last winter’s devastating COVID-19 surge. We simply cannot allow that to happen again,” Feinstein, 88, said in a statement.

Five people were shot as a rolling gun battle tore through the West Loop neighborhood early this evening, according to preliminary reports from the scene. The injured include a bicyclist, a ride-share passenger, and a man who may have been inside one of the gunman’s vehicles. “Man, this scene is almost a mile, two miles long,” one evidence technician assigned to document the shooting told a dispatcher. At least one victim was shot near the 600 block of West Kinzie, close to the Blommer Chocolate Factory, where a woman was shot last week.

Politicians have for years debated imposing an 80km-per-hour speed limit on the stretches of road which are famous for allowing motorists to drive as fast as they please. The Green Party has pushed for the move as it would help reduce CO2 emissions and make roads safer, but has so far failed to push a speed limit through parliament. But the party emerged as potential kingmakers coming third in the vote last week and could enter either a Traffic Light coalition with the Social Democrats (SDP) and Free Democrats (FDP) or a Jamaica coalition with the ruling CDU/CSU and FDP....

MEMORIAL OF SAINT JEROME, PRIEST AND DOCTOR OF THE CHURCH LUKE 10:1–12 Friends, our Gospel, taken from the magnificent tenth chapter of Luke’s Gospel, is a portrait of the Church. It shows us what Jesus wants his followers to be doing and how to do it. Listen to how the passage begins: "The Lord appointed a further seventy-two and sent them in pairs before him to every town and place he intended to visit." We are a missionary Church. We are sent by the Lord to spread his word and do his work. The Christian Gospel is just not something...

Walking down the dock at Long Wharf in August 2020, I was giddy with anticipation. Ulysse Nardin, the Swiss luxury watchmaker, had invited me to tour a 126-foot ship that was docked in Boston before its upcoming voyage. I have minimal interest in fancy timepieces, but couldn’t wait to learn about the boat and its owners and operators, Ocearch, a nonprofit that Ulysse Nardin sponsors. The international research vessel had been tricked out so it could haul white sharks aboard for study before returning them to the sea. I often joke that my spirit animal is a seal, because I...

As we get to the midpoint between the last presidential election and next year’s midterms, all political sides are expending extraordinary effort to ignore the 900-pound gorilla in the formerly smoke-filled room of American politics. This, of course, is Donald Trump. The Democrats are still outwardly pretending Trump has gone and that his support has evaporated. They also pretend they can hobble him with vexatious litigation and, if necessary, destroy him again by raising the Trump-hate media smear campaign back to ear-splitting levels. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), even as she finds the ground shifting beneath her feet over the...

The latest Public Health England technical briefing on Covid-19 variants of concern has been published and it reveals that up to the 12th September 2021, 74% of all alleged Covid-19 deaths since August 2nd 2021 have been among the vaccinated population, confirming the UK is currently experiencing a pandemic of the vaccinated. The report, which is the 23rd update to be released suggests at first glance that the vast majority of Covid-19 cases and hospitalisations are among the unvaccinated population. However, this is because the total numbers presented in the report have been collated from as far back as February...

With a shortage of school bus drivers, Gov. Tom Wolf’s administration is putting out an urgent call to find drivers. In addition, Pennsylvania Acting Health Secretary Alison Beam is encouraging school districts to make preparations for vaccine clinics in November in anticipation of federal approval of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine for kids 5-11. Currently, the vaccine is only approved for those 12 and older. And the administration is urging schools to take part in the state’s COVID-19 testing program. At a news conference Thursday, members of Gov. Tom Wolf’s administration are outlining those steps to keep children in classrooms amid...
