The story I heard is that his first name is Randy, but the senator’s wife wanted her husband to shorten his name because in England, “randy” means “horny.”

So it isn’t just “Rand” and he wasn’t named after Ayn Rand. Once again my grandfather was right when he told me that “you learn something new every day until they put you in a box.”

No reason given as to why his wife liked Rand vs. Randy. FYI, she’s thoroughly American, has no connection to England that I can find. Maybe she just likes a shorter name, or thinks that male names ending in “y” or “ie” are childish - who knows?
