Transparency advocates have criticized the US Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) decision not to hold a formal advisory committee meeting to discuss Pfizer’s application for full approval of its covid-19 vaccine. Last year the FDA said it was “committed to use an advisory committee composed of independent experts to ensure deliberations about authorization or licensure are transparent for the public.”1 But in a statement, the FDA told The BMJ that it did not believe a meeting was necessary ahead of the expected granting of full approval. “The FDA has held numerous meetings of its Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory...

Ibn Khaldun, one of the best known Tunisian historiographer and one of the leading Islamic Philosopher in 15th century summarized very well in his book Al-Muqaddimah the fallacy of the Arab Golden Age:“It is noteworthy how civilization always collapsed in places the Arabs took over and conquered, and how such settlements were depopulated and the (very) earth there turned into something that was no (longer) earth. The Yemen where (the Arabs) live is in ruins, except for a few cities. Persian civilization in the Arab 'Iraq is likewise completely ruined. The same applies to contemporary Syria. When the Banu Hilal...

When Mike Burton came down with a breakthrough case of covid-19 earlier this month, the infection posed a double threat to his family. At 73, the retired surgeon faced elevated risk of serious illness. His wife, Linda, has a suppressed immune system, the result of drugs she takes after two liver transplants that put her in greater danger of life-threatening illness. The Burtons, both vaccinated, moved to separate parts of their Mt. Sterling, Ky., home, masked up and hoped for the best. Then a friend called and insisted they ask their doctors about monoclonal antibodies - an effective, widely available...

Spotting Jupiter is a breeze this week for the naked eye as it reaches its biggest and brightest moment in the night sky. Telescope-hunters will also get a treat looking for moons and atmospheric bands. The gas giant planet will be at opposition today (Aug. 19), meaning it is directly opposite the sun in Earth's sky. Jupiter also makes its closest approach of the year to Earth during opposition. The planet will appear at magnitude -2.9, well within naked-eye range and outshining any star in Earth's sky except, of course, for the sun. To spot Jupiter, look to the left...

Even as China’s markets wobble, they will view The Afghan Skedaddle as an opportunity to pressure the US. “When I have learnt what progress has been made in modern gunnery, when I know more of tactics than a novice in a nunnery, and when I’ve a smattering of elemental strategy, I am the very model of a modern Major-General.”China’s markets are under pressure from the widening Chinese Communist Party’s regulatory crackdown – which is likely as much about imposing party discipline and control as much as it was ever about consumer protection. But as investors fret about crashing China stocks,...

Bin Laden made the remark in a 2010 letter that was found in a trove of documents at the Pakistan compound where he was killed by US special forces in 2011. The document was first made public in 2012 but has been brought back to light and given new significance amid the chaotic US withdrawal from Afghanistan that has gifted the country back to the Taliban.

With the fall semester fast approaching, most Vermont colleges say they expect the vast majority of their students to be vaccinated against Covid-19, which experts say is particularly important in congregate living situations like dorms.Still, colleges that require Covid-19 vaccinations grant exemptions on medical and religious grounds. And rates of exemption vary widely across Vermont campuses — up to a high of 9% of students at Norwich University who have been allowed to forgo vaccinations — raising concerns about controlling spread in a college setting. The goal for colleges should be “as close to 100% [vaccination] as possible,” said Anne Sosin,...

A January 6th protester is facing the possibility of sitting behind bars once again after he violated the conditions of his pre-trial release by reading news and watching conservative videos on Rumble. Douglas Jensen was one of the first unfortunate citizens who was arrested in the Jan. 6th witch hunt. He was stripped of his rights and thrown into jail on January 8th. He was charged with a seven-count indictment and multiple felonies despite causing no harm or damage. His biggest mistake was having a pocketknife on him when he was inside, which predictably caused these bloodthirsty radicals to gleefully...
