What the hell is going on at the FBI? You can say the same about the Department of Justice overall. After years of investigating the leaks to the press during the 2016 election, DOJ Inspector General Michael Horowitz said that they don’t know who was leaking because it seems as if everyone was just talking to the press willy-nilly and sharing sensitive information. In short, there were more leaks at the FBI than the Iraqi Navy during the 2016 race at a time when our nation’s preeminent law enforcement and domestic intelligence agency had to be as apolitical as possible....

The conclusion was based on interviews with dozens of White House employees and others. Many officials, unidentified in the report, "argue that Bernal's pursuit of perfection on behalf of the First Lady does not excuse the way he treats some other staffers. Many described him as 'berating' and 'toxic' because of his unfiltered criticism of others and tendency to trash talk his colleagues behind their backs." He's been compared, by co-workers, to Meryl Streep's dark character in "Devil Wears Prada," the report said. "Anthony's loyalty to our team and the First Family is unrivaled, and he holds himself, and all...

Researchers at the Francis Crick Institute and University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (UCLH) have studied whether antibodies produced as a result of infection with one SARS-CoV-2 variant are able to bind to and neutralize other variants. Over the course of the pandemic, various COVID-19 variants have arisen with the Delta variant currently dominant in the UK. Understanding how some variants may be able to trigger an effective antibody response against other variants, in addition to itself, could help inform future vaccine design. In their study, published in eLife (29 July), the scientists analyzed blood samples collected from patients...

A team of researchers has found evidence suggesting that an old vaccine used to reduce the threat of tuberculosis may give older people some protection against COVID-19. In their paper published in the journal Science Advances, the group describes their study of the Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine as a possible preventive measure for older people. As Koeken notes, as people grow older, they tend to develop low-grade, chronic inflammation, which makes them more susceptible to many types of diseases—it can also increase symptoms from diseases such as COVID-19, which explains in part why older people are much more likely to...

Earlier this week, Director of the National Institutes of Health Dr. Francis Collins appeared on CNN. There he dispenses some of the weirdest advice of the COVID era. He tells parents to wear masks at home around their own children if those children are unvaccinated, but the parents are.COVID vaccines aren’t even yet approved for kids below 12. So that’s an issue. Another is the fact that COVID still is very unlikely to spread to or from kids. They’re not vectors for this virus. Still, Dr. Collins clearly says to wear masks at home around your kids, even admitting that...

Comments from Moderna CEO Stéphane Bancel on Mornings with Maria, as well as a press release from the company, demonstrate why the current shots given to protect against COVID-19 are analogous to the flu shots rather than the vaccines we receive as children that protect us against the measles and other diseases for a lifetime. The rapidly accumulating data makes the idea of vaccine mandates and passports absurd.First, recent data from the U.K., Israel, and the CDC demonstrate that while the shots seem effective at reducing COVID-19 illness severity and duration, they do not prevent all infections, which would classify...

SUMMARY: Engineers have used a modified 3-D printer and frozen water to create three-dimensional objects made of graphene oxide. The structures could be an important step toward making graphene commercially viable in electronics, medical diagnostic devices and other industries.SNIP"Graphene is notoriously difficult to manipulate, but the structures we built show that it's possible to control its shape in three-dimensional forms," said Chi Zhou, assistant professor of industrial and systems engineering at UB's School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, and a corresponding author of the study.Zhou is a member of the Sustainable Manufacturing and Advanced Robotic Technologies (SMART), a UB Community...

Russian health food chain VkusVill has triggered a storm of criticism on social media for posting an online advertisement showing a lesbian family, then removing it and apologising. There was anger from those for and against the ad, which ran on VkusVill's website under the slogan "Recipes for family happiness". The firm said the ad was intended for people aged 18 and above. Russia bans any content deemed to be spreading gay "propaganda" to minors. In addition to that 2013 law, Russia bans gay marriage and adoption by gay couples. Instead of the photo showing the family group - mother...

In the world of soccer the jersey number 10 is a special one. The person wearing that number is the playmaker. They’re usually positioned either as the lead striker or the attacker just behind the lead striker. Most of the most decisive passes and scoring opportunities are created by or go through the #10.For the U.S. women’s national soccer team, Carli Lloyd wears the #10 jersey. Other players such as Megan Rapinoe absorb more of the media attention and endorsements, but U.S. women’s coaches have long acknowledged Lloyd as the team’s playmaker.Six years ago, it was Lloyd leading the way...

Anti-drunk driving technology may become standard on all cars in the next few years under one of the provisions baked into the $1 trillion federal infrastructure bill. The 2,702-page bill under negotiation also includes a provision that would require manufacturers to equip new vehicles with an alert system to let drivers know that kids or other passengers have been left in the backseat after the engine has been turned off. The new technologies would target alcohol-related car crashes and increasing incidents of kids dying in hot cars. The bill defines the preventative technology for impaired driving as anything that could...

Here is an example of creative writing. from a New York Times political columnist -- in this case Jamelle Bouie:"[T]here's no question that Donald Trump was determined to overturn the 2020 presidential election and end American constitutional government in order to stay in office." Alas, Bouie, in his August 4 column, makes the grievous mistake of citing Katie Benner, a Times colleague, as a source for the false claim that Mr. Trump threatened "American constitutional government in order to stay in office." Bouie could have made this fatal mistake only if he thought readers would not be reminded that Benner,...

Nearly 1,800 Americans directly affected by the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks are opposing President Joe Biden’s participation in any memorial events this year unless he upholds his pledge to declassify U.S. government evidence that they believe may show a link between Saudi Arabian leaders and the attacks. The victims’ family members, first responders and survivors will release a statement Friday calling on Biden to skip 20th-anniversary events in New York and Shanksville, Pennsylvania, and at the Pentagon unless he releases the documents, which they believe implicate Saudi officials in supporting the acts of terrorism. The group says that as...
