Anti-drunk driving technology may become standard on all cars in the next few years under one of the provisions baked into the $1 trillion federal infrastructure bill.
The 2,702-page bill under negotiation also includes a provision that would require manufacturers to equip new vehicles with an alert system to let drivers know that kids or other passengers have been left in the backseat after the engine has been turned off.
The new technologies would target alcohol-related car crashes and increasing incidents of kids dying in hot cars.
The bill defines the preventative technology for impaired driving as anything that could “passively and accurately detect” if someone’s blood alcohol concentration is above the legal limit.

I like the idea of a car flashing it’s lights if it is being operated with out the key! Or too far from the owners cell phone... or being able to be set BY cell phone. We have the technology now.
(But I don’t want the government mandating it- I don’t recall seeing that in the constitution)
You need to understand that liberals have no common sense and are incapable of any rational thought. They need the government and technology to tell them what to do (preferably with pictures).
So drunks will use a can of compressed air they ordered online for $2.99 to start the car and then put Saran Wrap over the sensor input.
Out of control government is out of control.
Or just pop on $1.99 mask that something like a carbon filter to trap the alcohol in the breath in case the car units detect Co2 and temp to be tricky.
Now it’s final. I’m keeping my 2003 ford ranger.
EVERY Republican that votes for this KNOWS they are assisting the Democrats to destroy the country with the subsequent reconciliation bill.
Using Hand Sanitizer in your car wouldn’t screw this stuff up ? LOL
So people that rush out to their cars to speed off to work in the morning after brushing their teeth and swishing around mouthwash can’t start em? That should be a big winner.
Ugh, the more technology you put in a car, the more it costs, the more likely it is to break down, the higher the repair costs and the more likely it is to be hackable and the more likely the government will use that tech to track all your moves.
All of the bells and whistles is one of the things that keeps lower income families stuck in cities and forced into mass transit.
That’s why I call them Republicucks.
“Hot car alert?”
Agree...being here in Texas it’s not tough to figure out that my car is hot, even without an alert.
...but that’s government. Interesting there isn’t a cold car alert, as that is not as easy to tell.
If the automakers decided to do it, though, I would buy some of those features.
My one and ONLY point was that government has no business mandating them.
Picture Fox and (not your) friends on election night, much like the security guards in San Francisco watching the shoplifters walking past them, doing nothing.
Couple that with some electioneering by calling Arizona for Biden on a national broadcast with the polls open and people in line waiting to vote. Arizona wasn't the only state with polls still open and lines waiting to vote when they made that call.
They knew exactly what they were doing.
This legislation and others worse to come are a direct result of what happened that day.
There are MILLIONS of USA rivers who do NOT drink at all.
This is an insult to each & every one of us.
Many people do not have a cell phone, so requiring such technology attached to a vehicle is nuts.
