On this date in 1649, the struggle between parliament and crown cost the Stuart monarch Charles I his head. Charles‘ political clumsiness and unreconstructed authoritarianism had seen the realm whose unitary sovereignty he insisted upon blunder from disaster to disaster: into bankruptcy, military defeat, religious conflict and the English Civil War. The assignation of cause and consequence in that war’s genesis has much exercised historians. What is beyond dispute is that the confrontation between monarch and subject, pitting against each other political and economic epochs, theories of state and power, rates as one of history’s most captivating courtroom dramas. Charles...

What happens when an unstoppable force hits an immovable object? In a recent speech at Brussels' International Data Privacy Day, Apple CEO Tim Cook went on the offensive against Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook. Cook's speech seems to be a direct response to Facebook's recent attack on Apple, in which the world's largest social network took out full-page ads in several newspapers attacking Apple's new privacy changes. But what's most fascinating is that Cook took direct aim at Facebook without ever mentioning the company by name. Technology does not need vast troves of personal data stitched together across dozens of websites...

This is a fictional scenario base on real COVID-9 numbers. It is an attempt to portray the real risk. COVID-19 is not a hoax, it is real. It is deadly to some people, and not as deadly to others. Anyone who says COVID-19 is not real cannot be taken seriously. That said, there is much to disagree with on the handling of this pandemic, and I have disagreed with the fundamental premise and handling if it since April 2020. Up to that point, I was keeping an open mind on it, since there was much that was not known. But in...

At various times over the last four years, I've wished I could communicate directly with President Trump to express my gratitude. Then it occurred to me: I have this column as a platform. While I have no hope he will actually see this editorial, I would like to submit an open letter to the president.(See comment for the letter. Thanks Patrice.)

WASHINGTON, Tuesday, Jan. 29. The joint application of Gen. SCOTT and Secretary HOLT to the President, to permit three additional companies of artillery to be ordered to this city, was granted, but before the orders could be made out and forwarded, the permission was withdrawn. So indecisive appears the President on all matters of public importance, that the belief is that his Cabinet generally act without his knowledge. Gen. SCOTT is said to be very indignant at the vacillating course of Mr. BUCHANAN. LATER. -- It is now understood that the President has receded from his refusal to allow Gen....

A hospital in the Salmon Creek neighborhood of Clark County went into lockdown on Friday night after a group of “exceptionally unreasonable” people demanded the release of a patient, authorities said. From the video below we can see a different reality, a daughter was trying to get her mother out of their care. Police aggressively pushed the daughter back after she tried to enter, and maced a man point-blank in his face. Video: LinkDeputies with the Clark County Sheriff’s Office were called to Legacy Salmon Creek at about 6:30 p.m. after a group of 30 to 40 people gathered outside...

At some point in our Christian walk, we cross over what could be referred to as the “obedience line.” That is when someone determines in his heart to go all the way with the Lord. When he realizes that nothing in this world can hold him and he resolves to obey God’s Word in all ways and at all costs. When you enter into a life of obedience and dependence on Christ with a determination never to go back, every alarm in hell is set off. Why? Because you have become a threat to the kingdom of darkness. When you...

Yesterday I was watching the news about how changing US policy would allow US tax dollars to go towards abortion funding both here and abroad after decades of policy otherwise. I found it rather sickening. There must be an unfathomable darkness that surrounds the soul of someone so that they can choose to take the most innocent sweetness of a fresh-from-heaven soul of a baby and not give them the chance to breathe the air of earth and life. Babies smile a lot, it seems they are dancing with angels! I recall how it felt to carry a new life...

At current rates, the new Biden administration is on track to oversee 250,000 more coronavirus deaths and 15 million more infections within its first 100 days. The Biden camp has responded to this catastrophe with a full-court press to blame it on the Trump administration. I would be the last to dispute accusations of incompetence directed at the Trump gang’s handling of the pandemic. But the buck stops with Biden now, and spinning the disaster as someone else’s fault simply won’t suffice.

“One God and Father of all who is over all and through all and in all” (Ephesians 4:6). There is only one God, and we will have a strong testimony by worshiping Him and holding on to what unites us. The last point of Christian unity Paul mentions in Ephesians 4:4-6 is that Christians have “one God and Father.” In Paul’s day, people believed in many gods; so he emphasizes our God’s uniqueness. No person or object can compare with God because He is “above all,” which means He is the sovereign creator and controller of the universe; He is...

Rep. Lauren Boebert, Colorado Republican, has introduced a bill to block the Biden administration from reentering the Paris agreement until it receives Senate confirmation, a nod to the longstanding debate over the accord’s legitimacy. Her bill, which has 11 GOP cosponsors, bars Congress from appropriating funds to implement the international climate accord until it receives Senate ratification, a step that former President Obama skipped when he used his executive authority to enter the agreement in 2016. “My bill prohibits Congress from spending a single penny on the Paris Agreement until this treaty is ratified by the United States Senate,” said...

This was strange, even for a mayor who once declared — seven years into his administration — that New York needed saving while standing beneath a model blue whale. For one thing, Bill de Blasio’s eighth and final State of the City speech wasn’t even a speech. Not one bit of the presentation was live. And never once during the entire 28-minute, pre-taped online affair did Hizzoner ever turn to the camera to directly address the audience. Instead, New Yorkers (if any beyond reporters getting paid to do so tuned in) were treated to often generic footage from around the...

We normally would not associate Vanity Fair with having a pro-life message, but the headline said it all: “Halsey Announces She's Pregnant: ‘I Love This Mini Human Already!’” Yes, that entity in this pop star’s belly is not a clump of tissue or a mass of cells. It is a human being, albeit a tiny one, a “someone,” not a “something.” Already Halsey feels a mother’s love. Now, I must confess to ignorance in terms of knowing much about Halsey, but it’s clear that she is somebody big in the music industry. She has 23 million Instagram followers and her baby...

1 Samuel 17:49 And David put his hand in his bag, and took thence a stone, and slang it, and smote the Philistine in his forehead, that the stone sunk into his forehead; and he fell upon his face to the earth. When interviewing an actual witness of the Trump victory rally an entirely different story comes out than the version the Communist Party is trying to project with its steel cage and National Guard props. No, theirs is exactly the opposite of the truth of what was happening from the eyewitness. The Pelosi version is far different than the...

Former President Donald Trump has actually gained -- not lost -- political clout since leaving office, a political observer asserted Friday. Politico reporter Tara Palmeri's observation runs contrary to the assumptions of many in the Washington D.C. establishment and the mainstream media. "People don't want to hear anything against Trump," Palmeri said during an appearIn fact, there is now a "crusade" being waged on behalf of the former president in places like Wyoming, where Trump is "way more popular" that the state's high-ranking congressional Republican, U.S. Rep. Liz Cheney, Palmeri said. She drew the conclusion after speaking with locals in...

In the mid-1940s, Edmund S. Morgan, a mild-mannered young historian, was teaching at Brown and making a name in the quiet field of early American studies. Having published a slim, well-received collection of essays on the New England Puritans, he might have seemed the very model of the unassuming scholar at the outset of a modest career, satisfied to refine the work of great forebears in a narrow field. That wasn’t Edmund Morgan. The Second World War was over. The United States was developing an energetic vision, which would come to fruition in 1960 with the election of John F....
