Idaho Attorney General Lawrence Wasden in a statement Thursday said the decision is necessary to protect Idaho's sovereignty. Here is the full statement: "I've spent substantial time reviewing Texas's Bill of Complaint so I could fully understand and consider the legal arguments being made. After doing so, I am declining to join this effort. As I have done since the day I took my oath of office...

Montana Gov. Steve Bullock is opposing a lawsuit filed by the state of Texas challenging the 2020 election results in four states. Bullock filed a brief, docketed late Thursday, in support of the defendant states—Pennsylvania, Georgia, Michigan, and Wisconsin—arguing that the Supreme Court should reject Texas’s request to sue. Montana is one of the states in which President Donald Trump won by a large margin in the November election. Bullock, a Democrat, argued that Montana, like the four defendant states, had expanded mail-in voting in the 2020 election, which means the outcome of the Texas case would impact the results...

The Trump administration is moving to broadly raise the standards for individuals to receive asylum status in the U.S., a step that critics are calling the biggest crackdown of this presidency on those seeking a haven in this country. A new, 419-page rule by the Department of Homeland Security and Department of Justice would create additional bars to asylum eligibility and limit the circumstances in which individuals can qualify for protection, changes that the administration says "are likely to result in fewer asylum grants annually." "This is the most sweeping attack on asylum that we have seen under the Trump...

The controversial ban on outdoor restaurant dining, part of an effort to break the back of California’s coronavirus surge, has clearly touched a nerve. Lawsuits have been filed seeking to overturn it in Los Angeles County. Celebrity chef Guy Fieri urged an end to the ban, tweeting, “We gotta keep Flavortown open for biz!” Restaurants have argued that public health officials have not provided evidence that outdoor dining spreads COVID-19 significantly and that they have taken precautions to make eating outdoors safe. They say they are being treated unfairly, especially considering that shopping mall remain open as well as many...

The solution to what’s known as the 340 Cipher, one of the most vexing mysteries of the Zodiac Killer’s murderous saga, has been found by a code-breaking team from the United States, Australia and Belgium. The cipher, sent in a letter to The Chronicle in November 1969, has been puzzling authorities and amateur sleuths since it arrived 51 years ago. Investigators hoped the Zodiac, who killed five people in the Bay Area in 1968 and 1969, would reveal his name in one of his many ciphers, but there is no such name in the 340. According to code-breaking expert David...

Image of the black hole M87*. (EHT Collaboration) =================================================================== General relativity is a profoundly complex mathematical theory, but its description of black holes is amazingly simple. A stable black hole can be described by just three properties: its mass, its electric charge, and its rotation or spin. Since black holes aren't likely to have much charge, it really takes just two properties. If you know a black hole's mass and spin, you know all there is to know about the black hole. This property is often summarized by the no-hair theorem. Specifically, the theorem asserts that once matter falls into...

About two-dozen members and members-elect of the Georgia state House and Senate filed an amici curiae brief supporting Texas’ Supreme Court lawsuit against Georgia, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Michigan. In a brief (pdf) filed with the court late on Thursday, Georgia state Sens. William Ligon, Greg Dolezal, Brandon Beach, Brandon Jones as well as many more Republican members of the Legislature signed on to support Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton’s suit that argued the four states made unconstitutional changes to their election laws.

I have but one question. Is there a way I can donate to her campaign now? Assuming, that is, that the rank but enjoyable speculation in this CNN piece is true. She and Jared are moving to Florida after Trump leaves office, partly because NYC clearly doesn’t want her anymore, partly because there’s a secluded ultra-rich area near Mar-a-Lago that’ll provide her family with privacy and protection, and partly because … she’s looking to get into politics, allegedly. Little Marco, though? Not rich. Viewed suspiciously by the base, especially MAGA types, for his “Gang of Eight” heresy on immigration. And...

Thursday, Senators David Perdue (R-Ga) and Kelly Loeffler (R-Ga) joined forces with the Georgia Republican Party and the National Republican Senatorial Committee in a federal lawsuit to “improve the reliability and transparency of the signature verification process.” This comes as “an effort to increase the integrity of the elections process ahead of the upcoming runoff for both U.S. Senate seats in Georgia,” according to the press release. The lawsuit “seeks to reaffirm these simple, non-partisan principles: every lawful vote cast should be counted, any illegal vote submitted cannot be counted and there must be full transparency and uniformity in the...

Hundreds of Hondurans trying to start a new caravan to reach the U.S. border were stopped by Honduran security personnel Thursday before they even reached the border with neighboring Guatemala. The Honduran police and immigration agents asked their countrymen to show travel documents and proof of negative coronavirus tests, which none appeared to have... The roughly 600 men, women and children had gathered Wednesday night in the northern city of San Pedro Sula and began walking along a dark highway toward the border with Guatemala. But as they approached the border crossing at Agua Caliente, the Honduran agents said they...

Thus said Hashem to Cyrus, His anointed one— Whose right hand He has grasped, Treading down nations before him, Ungirding the loins of kings, Opening doors before him And letting no gate stay shut: Isaiah 45:1 (The Israel BibleTM) ====================================================================== Not content with the traditional Hanukkah bash at the White House, President Trump held two parties celebrating the Jewish holiday on Wednesday night in the East Room. A lavish meal was served but the highlight was the selection of latkes, the traditional potatoes pancakes that (astronomically) symbolize the victory over the Seleucid Empire and the rededication of the Second Temple....
