The popular puzzles are largely written and edited by older white men, who dictate what makes it into the grid—and what is kept out. Last month, Sally Hoelscher published her first crossword puzzle in The New York Times. It was Presidents’ Day; the theme was memoirs by first ladies. Like lots of nerdy subcultures, the crossword puzzle has a buzzing ecosystem, and it whirred into action. Hoelscher posted a photo of the newspaper her husband rose early on his day off to buy, and veteran crossword constructors, as they’re called, offered congratulations in a Facebook group that develops constructors from...

Olga Kurylenko is sharing an update with the world on her coronavirus diagnosis just one day after revealing she was denied a hospital bed in London in the wake of overcrowding in the area’s hospitals. "Hello everyone! I'm feeling better today. My fever is gone!," she wrote to her Instagram followers on Wednesday. "I hear people can't figure out where I currently am. I'm in London! How do I know it's coronavirus and not just a flu? I did a test for coronavirus which came back positive.” “What are the medicines that doctors prescribed as treatment? NONE! I was told...

The pot of invested money used to pay for hundreds of thousands of California public employee pensions has shrunk by $69 billion as coronavirus has squeezed global markets. The California Public Employees’ Retirement System’s fund balance stood about $335 billion Thursday, down from a record high of $404 billion one month ago, according to CalPERS officials. The California State Teachers’ Retirement System likely experienced similar losses, but the system doesn’t publicly report its value as often as CalPERS does. Its value stood about $243 billion at the end of February. Read more here: https://www.sacbee.com/news/politics-government/the-state-worker/article241391841.html?#storylink=cpy

Iran's supreme leader is refusing U.S. assistance to fight the new coronavirus, citing an unfounded conspiracy theory that the virus could be man-made by America. . . . “Possibly your (offered) medicine is a way to spread the virus more,” Khamenei said. His comments come as Iran has over 20,600 confirmed cases of the new coronavirus amid 1,556 reported deaths.

With Iowa hospitals and clinics facing potential staffing shortages related to the COVID-19 virus, Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds has issued a state of public health disaster emergency, a section of which directly impacts nursing and nurses in the state. The emergency proclamation temporarily suspends administrative rules that prohibit the practice of medicine and surgery, osteopathic medicine and surgery, nursing, respiratory care and practice as a physician assistant by a license holder whose license is inactive or lapsed.

Warning: There’s Always a Black Swan Somewhere Ahead"There are known knowns. There are things we know we know. We also know there are known unknowns. That is to say, we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns, the ones we don't know we don't know." -  Donald Rumsfeld, 2002 This is undoubtedly Rumsfeld’s most famous, as well as most derided, quote. The media, predisposed towards disdain for George W. Bush’s Secretary of Defense, didn’t even attempt to comprehend what he was telling them. Instead they ridiculed his statement as “word salad.”...

For anyone who is paying attention, it’s beginning to look more and more like there won’t be any serious consequences for wrongdoing inside the FBI and DOJ. Yes, Attorney General Barr understands the critical nature of all this. The Durham investigation grinds on at glacial speed. They face a herd of musk ox. The insiders have formed a circle, horns out. Insiders are clearly signaling that they are far more interested in defending their institutions than in defending the truth. If there were any serious attempt to hold the bad apples accountable, we would have seen evidence of it long...
  • What did Dr. Fauci have to say in 2009 about the deadly H1N1 pandemic?

It seems some viral infection pandemics are more equal than others. At least when it comes to burning a vibrant Trump economy to the ground. In September 2009, after millions had become infected with the H1N1 influenza and thousands had died, some of whom were young people and children, a relaxed and unalarmed Dr. Anthony Fauci told an interviewer that people just need "to use good judgment." "Parents should not send their kids to school if they're sick, if you're sick don't go to work ... avoid places where there are people who are sick and coughing, now that's a...

CDC data confirms that the martial-law-light mandates steamrolling across America are disproportionate to the threat of the virus. Some governors and most corporations are responding to media-mob pressure to halt life in America. Others see an opportunity to land a death-blow to the Trump administration.

The majority of New York City residents who have tested positive for the coronavirus are men between the ages of 18 and 49, according to newly released public health data. Even though experts say the elderly are the hardest hit by the virus, just 46% of the city’s COVID-19 patients are over 50 while 54% are 18-49. The remaining 2% of cases are people age 5 to 17. The demographics, from the city’s Health Department, were determined from an analysis of 3,954 positive cases on March 19.

Donald Trump’s first instinct when it came to the coronavirus was to dismiss the threat as overblown, over there, and “totally under control.” His second was to use the pandemic as an opportunity to show off his world-historical leadership skills by treating the virus as a threat on par with World War II. Both reactions were driven by politics, not evidence. The first was unquestionably wrong. The second needs to be questioned aggressively before we impose solutions possibly more destructive than the virus itself

China’s coronavirus is a revealer of prophetic events, perhaps a type and shadow of what is to come. We have seen just how small the world is. Humanity is globally connected in this 21st Century. What happens in China can determine what happens in Ohio, or even in a small rural community in Africa. We can see how quickly devastation, panic, economic disaster, sickness and death can occur. If it gets worse and worse, we could see how nations can rise up against nations and how famines and wars could quickly develop. The tighter food and medical supplies become, the...

Sorry for another vanity, but I haven't seen this brought up anywhere in the news. Received an email from my water company, saying they are suspending late fees. Wondering what else was out there, and based on my research: Electric company - deferred payment plans (with needs based application to file) Gas company - deferred payment plans (with needs based application to file) Cable / Internet company - no info Mortgage company - no info Cell phone - no info Credit card - no info So the question is, what bills should we be paying (some? all? none?). WASHINGTON -- In 2020, people talk about "two Americas." During the coronavirus outbreak, there is one America, a sheltered America, with people who -- like me -- can work at home. And another America, an edgier America, that stands to be devastated by coronavirus closures. There is also a third America that can be seen in the three states hardest hit by the COVID-19 and virtually shut down. In order to keep the rest of America from turning into that third America, sheltered America argues, stringent measures must be imposed on all of America. To which edgy America responds: If...
