A campaign has been launched to protect the remains of a Roman villa unearthed during work on a new housing estate. The villa was discovered in Cam, Gloucestershire, by archaeologists working on behalf of Bovis Homes. BBC TV presenter and archaeology expert Professor Mark Horton is among those calling for it to be saved, describing it as "a very important discovery". But the developer says archaeologists have told them the villa does not qualify for preservation. Resident Christie McLean has started a petition to help save the villa, which had over 2,000 signatures within a day of launching. She said...

Christopher Steele’s private intelligence firm, Orbis Business Intelligence, accused President Trump of making “false claims” during a White House speech Thursday about the former British spy’s infamous dossier . . . “He wildly exaggerated our fees and, contrary to his claims we have never stated any of our reporting is ‘fake’. We stand by the integrity of our research on Kremlin interference in the 2016 election and support for Trump,” the tweet continued.

Former South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg was severely mocked for tweeting a quote pic with a saying that critics claim “literally doesn’t mean anything.” During a CNN town hall on Thursday night, Buttigieg was asked if he could enact one specific policy as president, what it would be. “Just one? Wow,” Buttigieg reacted. “Let me say this, it’s not a sizzling, glamorous issue, but the shape of our democracy is the issue that affects every other issue. So in order for us to get better outcomes on funding public education, on dealing with gun violence… there are so many issues...

UC Berkeley’s Boalt Hall is no more, its name removed from the law school today (Thursday, Jan. 30), campus officials announced. The denaming — the outcome of a nearly three-year process launched after a Berkeley lecturer discovered the racist writings of John Henry Boalt, a 19th century Oakland attorney — is the first time a Berkeley facility’s name has been eliminated due to its namesake’s character or actions.

Posted on February 7, 2020February 7, 2020 by Msgr. Charles Pope Every Life is a Story – As seen in a touching video When my father lay dying, I remember that one of the losses I began to grieve was that he was the keeper of so many family stories. He was the one who could look at an old family photograph, identify all the people, and tell you something about each one. As I saw him lying there, no longer able to talk much, I thought of all the memories stored up in his mind, all the stories,...

A fierce behind-the-scenes dispute between House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s office and Facebook erupted into public view Friday, as the speaker’s office demanded that Facebook remove a video posted online by President Donald Trump. The video in question showed Pelosi’s viral State of the Union moment ripping up the text of Trump’s speech Tuesday night, but was edited to make it appear that she ripped the speech even as Trump saluted a Tuskegee airman in the audience. In fact, Pelosi’s speech-ripping gesture came at the end of the president’s speech, and her office said it was in response to the totality...

America has exhausted all of its military options in Afghanistan and is left with little choice but to forge ahead in peace talks with the Taliban, Pakistani Ambassador to the U.S. Asad M. Khan said Monday, underscoring the high stakes of grueling negotiations. In an exclusive interview with The Washington Times, Mr. Khan said the two sides have reached a crucial moment — despite continued Taliban attacks and a spike in American strikes against the radical Islamist movement’s top targets — to solidify a cease-fire agreement that could wind down two decades of conflict and bring to a close the...

The freshman Queens socialist enlisted her man to talk about the issue of “combating racism as a white person.” “I think it’s helpful and important to talk to other white people about racism, and I think a lot of people, they don’t want to be racist,” Roberts, 30, offered as AOC sat beside him. “They don’t think that they’re racist, but they also don’t know some of the things they believe or say are and can be racist.”

Israeli researchers revealed Wednesday that they successfully grew extinct date plants from ancient seeds found at archaeological sites in the Judean Desert. Dozens of seeds were gleaned from archaeology collections gathered at locations in the dry Dead Sea area, including the Masada hilltop fortress built by King Herod the Great in the first century BCE and the ancient site of Qumran, famous for the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls in the 1940s. Six saplings grew from 32 seeds sown and the plants have been dubbed Adam, Jonah, Uriel, Boaz, Judith, and Hannah... Radiocarbon dating revealed the seeds used for...

That fiery ball in space does settle down every 11 years or so. It’s called the solar minimum, and the Space Weather Prediction Center indicates that this phase of low sunspot activity will continue for a few more years. During a solar minimum, the sun has very few sunspots on its surface, which some speculate could affect the earth’s weather. In contrast, a solar maximum has more sunspots on its surface and solar activity is high. “Usually a solar minimum lasts about a year or so, but then sometimes it can last for decades or even longer,” said Prof. Jason...

Turkey has sent reinforcements to its forces in the Idlib province of Syria, the last rebel-held region in the country. The armoured vehicles and tanks were headed for the observation posts that Turkey has already set up in the province, following an advance by Syrian government forces that could pave the way for them to mount an offensive on the provincial capital. But as Al Jazeera's Sinem Koseoglu reports, Turkey is determined to stop that.

The Senate’s impeachment trial of President Trump may have ended, but the political fallout will continue for weeks and possibly months to come. A pair of Democratic super PACs on Friday announced reservations for a several-million-dollar digital ad campaign targeting Republican senators in Arizona, Maine and North Carolina, two days after the trio voted to acquit Trump on charges of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. Armed with polling showing voters largely supported an expanded trial, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee is trying to raise money for key challengers to Republican incumbents. “We know you’re angry,” the DSCC began...

Frida Mom, a brand dedicated to postpartum recovery, set out to air a commercial to raise awareness of what women go through during this often overlooked (but extremely significant) period during the 92nd Academy Awards, airing Sunday—but their commercial was apparently rejected by ABC for being...
