The days of German complacency were nice, but they’re over. They lasted nearly as long as Angela Merkel’s chancellorship and were defined by a feeling of seemingly endless economic success and a sense of pride over Germany’s role in the world. Indeed, at the World Economic Forum in Davos three years ago, Germany was designated as the “best country in the world.” In Europe, there was talk of the “German model” as something for other countries to emulate. When Donald Trump became president in the U.S., some expected Angela Merkel to take up the torch as leader of the free...

After a gunman in west Texas killed five people and injured more than 20 in Midland and Odessa Saturday, White House hopeful and former Texas lawmaker Beto O’Rourke (D) said that, while the facts of the shooting have not been released by officials, “we do know this is f—ed up." “Not sure how many gunmen. Not sure how many people have been shot. Don’t know how many people have been killed. The condition of those who have survived. Don’t know what the motivation is, do not yet know the firearms that were used or how they acquired them,” O’Rourke told...

With so much food to eat, what’s a hungry person to do? That’s a question sure to be raised continuously as the 138th Maryland State Fair runs through Labor Day at the state fairgrounds in Timonium. Sure, there’s tons of fun to be had roaming the grounds, checking out the livestock, riding a carousel or Ferris Wheel, trying your hand at the ring toss, even checking out a horse race or two. Inevitably, however, the time is going to come when your stomach demands attention. It’s time to eat. So you head for the Maryland Foods Pavilion, home to some...

A teacher in Texas lost his job for suggesting that a Hispanic student, who didn’t address the teacher as “Sir,” could be deported. “He told him, ‘Even though you are a citizen, Trump is working on a law where he can deport you, too, because of your mom’s status,’” the boy’s mother, who is in the United States legally and asked to remain anonymous, told CBS DFW. Even though they are citizens, her son now fears that he and and his mother will be deported. The station reports that the boy didn’t wear a belt to The Barack and Michelle...

A Florida man wielding nunchucks and bug spray tried to quiet a group of noisy neighbors, spraying them and threatening to open fire on the revelers — but the only person he ended up injuring in the crazed quest for quiet was himself, officials said. Larry Adams, 61, was arrested after the bizarre confrontation, which residents said was sparked by loud music coming from a car outside a Daytona Beach apartment complex late Monday night, FOX35 Orlando reported. One neighbor told the station Adams initially tried to frighten the group, but the bid backfired – literally – when he struck...

A Little Caesars restaurant in Fargo, North Dakota is capturing hearts and feeding the hungry with a new policy they posted with a sign in their window. A new idea came to General Manager, Michelle Lussier, after she noticed an ongoing problem: people were eating leftovers from the store dumpster. Lussier decided to approach the situation with a surprising solution, offering free slices of pizza inside the store. She recognized that the homeless are human beings the same as everybody else, and deserve dignity, respect, and compassion. The sign hung on the drive-through window reads: “To the person going through...

I thank Don Cuddy of the Standard Times, for putting me in contact with Martin Smith of Mattapoisett, at that time a 13 yr older and an eye witness to the events of that day. Martin was a summer neighbor of the Troys. Thanks Martin for giving me detailed information on the attack . - An attitude of “shark attacks can’t happen up here” would have been prevalent along the beaches of New England in 1936. Hardly anyone would have known about the 1830 attack on Mr. Blaney in Massachusetts Bay. For that matter most people wouldn’t have knowledge of...

On Friday, the 30th of August 2019, US President Donald Trump, who had been engaged in a rattling battle all over the world with Beijing over tariffs, prodded No. 1 US automaker, General Motors Co., the Detroit-based US multinational automotive corporation to shift its manufacturing hubs back into the United States. Meanwhile, criticising the Detroit-based automaker’s move to shift a majority of its larger plants to China aimed at averting China tariff on US-based autos, while remaining competitive in the largest auto market in the world, China, Trump tweeted in a post earlier on Friday (August 30th), “General Motors, which...

Colorado is full of many man-made marvels — some weird and wacky, like Swetsville Zoo, and others simply wondrous, such as the United States Air Force Academy Chapel in Colorado Springs. But if you want to see that particular marvel, plan on making a quick trip over Labor Day weekend: The chapel will close to the public on September 3 for a major renovation that is slated to last three years.

HIGHLANDS RANCH, Colo. (KKTV) - A Colorado woman was found guilty of killing her own newborn daughter and tossing the body into a neighbor's yard. Camille Wasinger-Konrad, 25, is expected to spend the rest of her life in prison after she was found guilty on Tuesday of first-degree murder after deliberation, tampering with physical evidence and the position-of-trust murder charge. “Of all the many emotions of the magical first moments of a baby’s life, of all the many tender moments a mother shared in that first embrace with a completely helpless and fragile life, smothering a newborn, and pitching its...

Hi all, I am asking for immediate prayer for a friend of mine's daughter GRACIE. She is 20 and pregnant. She had a reaction to a fungal infection cream and went to the hospital. In the hospital she got a bed sore which turned into a staph infection. Her legs are so swollen she can 't walk and they have her on a high dosage of morphine. The minute they lower it she loses it...too much pain. The doctors are very concerned she may not make it. Would truly appreciate any prayer warriors out there to take a moment...Thank you...

Kim Campbell, Canada’s former prime minister for a coffee break, desperately wants to be relevant. She’s been searching for it since 1993 when her political career went down in flames along with the Progressive Conservative Party she led at the time. When she was finished, two seats in the Commons were all the PCs had left after nine years of majority government under Brian Mulroney. There haven’t been many humiliating defeats like that in Canadian political history, although Donald Trump’s shocking win over Hillary Clinton to become U.S. President in 2016 rivals it. Campbell has kept busy over the years...

I see and hear a lot of talk about how a national gun registration and/or confiscation would be the trigger that would spark a second American Revolution, as patriots rise up to resist the jackbooted thugs who are going door-to-door taking away people’s arms. I have bad news for everyone who’s waiting for national registration or a mass confiscation so they can get their armed rebellion on: a national database of gun owners already exists, and a national confiscation effort will never happen. Ever. Instead, you’ll hand over your firearms peacefully. All of them, even the ones you paid cash...

This is no time to be on the sidelines. Stacey Abrams: Stand up and be counted. "I do not want to serve in the Senate," says the hugely popular former Georgia Democratic gubernatorial nominee. Steve Bullock: Stand up and be counted. "My talents are best suited" to an executive role, says Montana's well-liked Democratic governor. Beto O'Rourke: Stand up and be counted. "That would not be good enough" to serve in the Senate, says the gifted former Democratic congressman from Texas. Sorry, but what's not "good enough" are those answers. The three could make all the difference in Democrats' uphill...

The Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals held yesterday that a Los Angeles Police Department officer is entitled to qualified immunity in an action based on his nonfatal shooting of a 15-year-old boy who was in a group of four youths in an alley, one of whom was perceived by the officer to be holding a gun on one of the others. Officer Miguel Gutierrez fired his weapon, grazing the back of Jamar Nicholson Green, who was the boy believed to be holding a weapon (which was actually a toy pistol with an orange cap). Gutierrez participated in the decision...

An armed man who allegedly tried to rob a mobile phone store in Philadelphia on Monday was shot and killed by an employee in a dramatic moment captured on video. The Philadelphia Police Department said the incident happened just after 4 p.m. at a Metro PCS store in the southwest part of the city when an unidentified man who appeared to be in his late 30s entered the business. The man was trying to rob the store when the lone employee inside – who has a permit to carry a firearm – fired at the would-be robber multiple times, striking...

YOU'RE THE ONE Les tells the story proudly now, with an ending that few would have ever predicted when he was in high school. He remembers the turning point as though it were yesterday. Just a chance encounter and an offhand comment... but it changed his life forever. He had slipped quietly into the back of a classroom to wait for a friend that day. The last thing he wanted was to be noticed, but the teacher asked him to go to the board and work out a problem. Les pointed out that he wasn't...
