The Thin Man is a 1934 comedy-mystery film directed by W. S. Van Dyke and based on the novel of the same name by Dashiell Hammett. The film stars William Powell and Myrna Loy as Nick and Nora Charles, a leisure-class couple who enjoy copious drinking and flirtatious banter. Nick is a retired private detective who left his very successful career when he married Nora, a wealthy heiress accustomed to high society. Their wire-haired fox terrier Asta is played by canine actor Skippy.

1934, not 1936.

“Myrna Loy was smoking hot”.

That’s for sure. I saw her playing a Gypsy girl in one of her early movies and she was smoldering.

She was amazing in Best Years of Our Lives. One of my all time favorite movies. The actress who played her daughter was also very, very attractive.

Hollywood is dead.

Love Powell’s “Thin Man” movies!
Watch them, kids. After 10 minutes the B&W won’t bother you at all. You’ll love it!

All his ‘private eye’ movies are great, and the others don’t suck either.

Yes, she was amazing. Best Years of Our Lives is one of my very favorite movies, too.

You’re right. Hollywood is now real crap. I really enjoy old movies on TCM.

The kids bought us the Thin Man boxed set a few years ago. Of course, dvds are almost useless now.

Thin Man movies are among my favorites. Outstanding dialogue included clever banter between William Powell’s and Myrna Loy’s characters that provided layered meanings for viewers of different ages.

After reading this thread I was looking around for a free film noir movie on youtube, and among the old movies there was a Colombo episode from 1972.

I decided to watch it instead. Lo and behold Myrna Loy was a guest star. John Cassavetes played the villian.
