Few issues unite millennials like the future of Social Security. Overwhelmingly, they’re convinced it doesn’t have one. A recent Transamerica survey found that 80 percent of millennials, defined in the survey as people born between 1979 and 2000, worry that Social Security won’t be around when they need it. That’s not surprising — for years, they’ve heard that Social Security is about to “run out of money.” The language doesn’t match the reality. Social Security benefits come from two sources: taxes collected from current workers’ paychecks and a trust fund of specially issued U.S. Treasury securities. This trust fund is...

He just doesn’t seem too well-suited to the world of political consultancy With millions of people unemployed, finding a new job for a well-heeled Washington insider might seem like a low priority for Americans but I still believe it would be sensible and humane to find Bill Kristol another job. The poor fellow has spent years working in politics, and it just isn’t working out for him – or anyone else. Mr Kristol is of course the son of neoconservative theorist Irving Kristol. Neoconservative families are unusually rich in political commentators. Irving Kristol’s contemporary and ideological comrade Norman Podhoretz produced...

Former Vice President Joe Biden has heavily courted union votes, but a powerful labor union in his campaign's home base of Philadelphia, crucial in a general election, is feeling snubbed. At issue is a forum the AFL-CIO's Philadelphia branch is holding Sept. 17, which the union is branding a Workers' Presidential Summit. Seven candidates have agreed to attend so far, including...

New Jersey can move ahead with a new law allowing terminally ill patients to seek life-ending drugs, a state appeals court ruled Tuesday, overturning a lower court's temporary hold on the law. Judges Carmen Messano and Arnold Natali ruled Tuesday that a state Superior Court "abused its discretion" in blocking the law earlier this month. "We conclude the court failed to consider adequately the interests of qualified terminally-ill patients, who the Legislature determined have clearly prescribed rights to end their lives consistent with the Act," the appeals court wrote in its opinion. Rich Grohmann, an attorney for Dr. Yosef Glassman...

“Defendants’ challenge to the libel verdicts consists mostly of regurgitated arguments that this Court already decided during summary judgment briefing and that can be dismissed out of hand.” Oberlin College will appeal, of course, but before has filed two post-trial motions, a Motion for Judgment Notwithstanding The Verdict (pdf.) and Motion for a New Trial (pdf.). As explained in our post, Oberlin College Seeks New Trial in Gibson’s Bakery Case, most of those motions were uninteresting rehashing of arguments previously litigated and rejected by the trial Judge John Miraldi. The only interesting part of the motions was the issue of...

Oh boy… how federal Judge Emmet Sullivan will handle this latest motion from Mike Flynn’s attorney Sidney Powell is an unknown; however, the content is delicious. Many Muslim activists and operatives already felt all but neglected by the Democratic presidential candidates. Now, as most 2020 contenders are set to skip what is billed as the largest annual gathering of Muslims in the country this weekend, they’re growing increasingly fearful that Democrats may miss an opportunity to mobilize their community against President Donald Trump next year. Only two Democratic hopefuls, Bernie Sanders and Julián Castro, have confirmed they are going to the Islamic Society of North America’s convention. Organizers said they invited every candidate polling above 1 percent to participate in the presidential forum, as well as...

A Vermont nurse has been left ‘traumatised’ after a hospital ‘violated her civil rights’, by forcing her to partake in an abortion procedure, despite her deep-held moral objections. She had previously made it clear to her employer that she did not wish to participate in abortion procedures due to conscientious objection. However, it has been reported by The Atlantic, that upon entering the room, the nurse was told ‘please don’t hate me’ by the doctor,...

Democratic leaders are about to repeat the mistake of 2016. We have begun to hear excuses for a weak status quo candidate. But we need and we want someone who stands for necessary change. We are told that there are certainly better policies being offered by other candidates, and Joe Biden is certainly not perfect. However, Joe is “electable.” As if he is the only one. But the polls tell us that several other candidates presently lead the president. Putting Joe Biden in the ring with Trump would be like putting a doddering old fool in the ring with a...

According to the records, in Fiscal Year 2018 the U.S. Health and Human Services Civil Rights Office received over a thousand complaints, alleging conscience violations or religious discrimination. That’s significantly more than in any year recorded under the previous presidential administration. One complaint came from a Catholic nurse working at the University of Vermont Medical Center. The unnamed nurse claims that her employer forced her to take part in an abortion, though she had informed the hospital of her pro-life beliefs. The nurse was scheduled to help a patient who had suffered a miscarriage, but when she walked into the...
