Any help would be appreciated. This is a cartridge I have never reloaded for, ever. The gun is a Colt New Service.

You can look it up on line at Winchester powder reloading site, or whatever brand of powder you are using, will have a site. You should Never ask someone their favorite recipe, because if there is a mis communication, someone can get hurt.

Unless the brass is a really loose fit in the chambers, the gun will fail long before the strength of the brass is challenged.

Check out this site info -— states 13,000 psi max but over so many years of service, with many makers of brass for it, hard to say exactly. Reloading manuals probably have added info.

Have Fun!!

This is great advice. Reloading manuals, tech lines at the folks at the production facilities are the places to go. I have never been stiffed by tech help at the manufacturers. They’ll generally steer you right and you can check SAAMI. Reloading is great but it requires good habits and good info.

Well, I don't know what pressures the brass alone will withstand, but my Quickload program indicates the MAXIMUM pressures for .455 Webley in general is:

For MkI: 17405 CUP
for MkII: 13053 CUP

Note that those are Copper Units of Pressure, Not SAAMI PSI.

None of my printed manuals have any info on .455 Webley

Starline makes MKII Brass. I suppose they could give you more information on the brass strength.

As an aside to the original question. I read an article the Brit troops in the Philippines back in the late 1800’s or so were defending themselves with 38 Weblys and the Moro tribesmen who were chewing cocoa leaves would take a hit and they would absorb the hit and chop Brit troops up with machetes. Then along comes this Brit officer with the 455. He shoots and the attackers stayed down. Viola Brits converted to the 455. Wish I had a link to the article but it’s pretty old. Reguardless, the 45 antything is a pretty good Hammer.

I’ve heard the same story, and also the American Version, of .38 Special / .45ACP..

I’m a .45 fan too.

As another aside, I had a chance to buy a like new Webley Fosbury, for $75.00 a long time ago. I wanted to do it, but was in Army AIT and only making about that much a month, and had just spent all my cash on a Ruger Mk1, so I had to pass on the Webley. One of the biggest regrets of my life.

The things we miss. Missed a Schofield, missed a python, missed a shilo, and the list goes on. No money then and now I’m old. I’ve got somethings and they’re like money in the bank, but still it only serves as small comfort. Hindsight is 20/20.

I’ve seen that it may have been cannabis that the Moro were hopped up on. I’m not sure where they would have gotten coca, which is what I think you meant, when you typed cocoa. Chocolate cravings may motivate some to violence, but eating it usually makes them pretty docile.

The article is old as am I. I think your right, what I remember was the 455 Webly was a load for hopped up bad guys. If you can handle it, it’s good company.

They weren’t hopped up on weed. It was on a plant that produced results which resembledl PCP. Very dangerous.

I only said aI’d read it. Michael Savage knows more about the alkaloid containing plants of the Pacific than any sane man should, and he has a vid and says they were hopped ip on “ God knows what” from the jungle. Add that the Moro were Muslim fanatics, and you’ve got a formidable warrior. Apparently, some went into battle with their children as shields

I first heard the lore when my dad was teaching me to shoot granpa’s .45. The old saw that a .38 wouldn’t stop them, but a .45 made them do a back-flip.

There’s an old saying credited to a Marine Sargent the goes something to the effect “ if it don’t have a 4 and a 5 in the caliber id, it ain’t worth carrying”. That’s not my personal view, carry what you can defend yourself with, just carry always. You ain’t carrying in a gun fight you lose. Losing is not an option. Period.

The old Webley with moon clips.
I almost bought one, it had been refurbished.
Moon clips is not what it was designed for.

Damn shame, I really wanted that regimental beasty.

That’s the same reason US .38 revolvers were pulled and the .45 single action army was reissued.
