Thousands of academics are gathering in Vancouver for the annual Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences from June 1-7. They will present papers on everything from child marriage in Canada to why dodgeball is problematic. In its Oh, The Humanities! series, the National Post showcases some of the most interesting research. The games children play in schoolyards are famously horrible, if you stop and think about them. Tag, for example, singles out one poor participant, often the slowest child, as the dehumanized “It,” who runs vainly in pursuit of the quicker ones. Capture the Flag is nakedly militaristic. British...

As Amazon Synod approaches, Vatican’s claims about environment deserve scrutiny Editor’s Note: Steve Mosher has written a two-part series on the upcoming Amazonian Synod. Part I, below, addresses certain scientific claims about the Amazon made by the synod organizers, chiefly Cardinal Barreto. Part II will address the cardinal’s new proposals — purportedly based on lessons learned from the indigenous peoples of the Amazon — on how the Church can achieve gender equality, alleviate the priest shortage, and use environmentally appropriate matter in the celebration of the Eucharist. May 30, 2019 (LifeSiteNews) — Preparations are in full swing for the Special...

A heroic dad repeatedly punched a shark that almost killed his daughter in a terrifying attack in North Carolina, according to his family. Paige Winter, 17, lost a leg and some fingers after getting mauled in the water at Fort Macon beach on Sunday. She was airlifted 80 miles to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville where a rep told NewsChannel 12 that her “heroic father … saved her life.” “Thank God our son was with her,” Paige’s grandmother Janet Winter said of Charlie Winter, a former US Marine who is also a local firefighter. “He said he punched the shark...

So I finally started watching some of the summer shows. I'm not into psychics but I thought I'd give the show, The InBetween, a view. Its a cop show where this one cop (the star) has a psychic on the side helping him figure out cases. As I found it mildly entertaining I started watching close keeping up with the plot. Then about 20-30 minutes in, the cop goes to this house and nearly runs over and plants a quick smooch on his other. His other being another fellow taller than him. It took me about 5 seconds to hit...

King Salman of Saudi Arabia has pulled off in Mecca what many had thought unlikely -- getting 20 or so disparate Arab nations to unite in a common position against Iran. ... In middle-of-night, back-to-back summits at Islam's holiest of sites, the aging but still-attentive Saudi monarch got a double endorsement of his claims that Iran is destabilizing the Middle East and a backing of his call for "the international community to shoulder its responsibility. The six-nation Gulf Cooperation Council and 21 Arab League nations present called for Iran to stop "interfering in the internal affairs" of its neighbors and...

Over a year ago I asked whether U.S. Atty. Peter Huber could impartially and fully investigate FISA court abuses and other matters in which his boss Deputy AG Rod Rosenstein was up to his eyeballs, “Can Huber Investigate His Boss Rosenstein?”, in which I asked: While it is reassuring to note that A.G. Jeff Sessions has climbed down from the back side of the milk carton, where his missing visage had been hiding, long enough to appoint Utah U.S. attorney Peter Huber to independently investigate claims of FBI abuses in surveilling the Trump campaign and other matters, one question remains....

Today’s Cryptogram E RGIC TN HIAIS VTHTNBIY, GHFQ EKEHYGHIY. ---REJF AEFISQ Today’s CG is courtesy of the Arkansas Gazette. You can find this little fun word game, to combat early dementia and senility in us baby boomers, in several daily publications. The way it works is a letter stands for another letter. For example: AXYDLBAAXR is LONGFELLOW (does not apply to today's cryptogram). Beware, the game is very addictive. If this is your first time, don't be intimidated. PLEASE DO NOT post the answer in general comments, but DO post your time and any tips you might give the group...

Syrian government forces have captured a village deep within the last rebel stronghold in the northwest province of Idlib, after intense clashes with militants. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an opposition war monitor, said on Monday that the troops had reached the village of Qassaibyeh. The pro-government Syrian Central Military Media also confirmed that Syrian troops have captured the village. Human rights and war monitor groups say the government campaign to retake Idlib over the past month, supported by airstrikes, has killed dozens of civilians. The area is overcrowded with refugees and displaced persons from the war.

Today’s Campaign Update (Because The Campaign Never Ends) Meanwhile, in news that actually matters to Americans… – While everyone else is focused on President Donald Trump’s first state visit to the future Islamic Republic of England, paying tribute to a monarchy that is doomed to fall within a generation, I thought I’d focus on something of actual substance. If you perused the Drudge Report this morning – which I still do despite his lurch off into leftist paranoia over the past year – you would find the following links at the right side of the landing page: PLANET TECH ROCKED:...

The Daily Beast recently doxed a black forklift driver and reported Trump supporter for the alleged high crime of creating a parody video of Democrat speaker of the house Nancy Pelosi. But there’s more to the story — it appears Facebook may have helped the left-wing journalists identify him. The Daily Beast identified the video creator as Shawn Brooks, whom they described as a forklift driver and Trump supporter from the Bronx. A Twitter account claiming to be Brooks disputed key details of the story, claiming he is not a Trump supporter, did not create the parody video, and does...

Calling the CBS News interview with AG Barr a bombshell doesn’t do it justice. The interview is chock-full of one explosive comment after another about special counsel Robert Mueller, the media and Barr’s own investigation of the investigators: <><>“So it was bogus, this whole idea that Trump was in cahoots with the Russians is bogus.” <><>“It’s hard to read some of the [FBI] texts and not feel that there was gross bias at work, and they’re appalling.” <><>“The use of foreign-intelligence capabilities and counterintelligence capabilities against an American political campaign to me is unprecedented and it’s a serious red line...

The latest quake was a 3.3 that hit at 4:36 p.m. in the Glen Avon-Fontana area of Riverside County, followed by a 2.6 and a 2.7 in the same area less than an hour later, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Earlier in the afternoon, a 3.4 magnitude quake was recorded just north of Nuevo, a community near Perris in Riverside County less than 30 miles away from Glen Avon. Both the Nuevo and...

IT'S simply not enough for billionaires to have everything they've ever wanted – they need eternity to enjoy it, too. At least a dozen of the world's richest men have ploughed millions into bizarre ways to live forever. Here are five of the weirdest. 1) Cure for ageing A number of billionaires are putting their cash to good use by trying to find a "cure" for ageing. Mall-based retailers reported dismal earnings last week, reminding investors of the sector’s fundamental problems Retailers’ earnings season has gone from bad to worse. The bleeding intensified last week, with shares of Abercrombie & Fitch plummeting 26% on Wednesday, the biggest percentage decline since the company went public. PVH Corp., owner of brands including Van Heusen, Tommy Hilfilger, and Calvin Klein, dropped 10% that day, too. On Thursday, women’s wear chain J.Jill was down a jaw-dropping 53% and on Friday, Gap Inc. slid 9%. It is hard to miss what all of these retailers have in common: They are mall-based. While...
