UPPER PENINSULA -- The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is considering changing, or even cancelling deer hunting season this year. DNR officials say that the winters in the Upper Peninsula have been especially harsh and have severely thinned out the deer population. According to Deer Management Specialist Chad Stewart, the most recent deer harvest will be one of the lowest in the last thirty years. To help preserve deer population numbers in the U.P., the DNR has prepared six options that they will present to the Natural Resources Commission at their May 7th meeting. The most severe, and controversial, of...

Bernie Sanders' nascent presidential campaign announced Friday that it raised more than $1.5 million in its first 24 hours, a number that far outpaces what Republican presidential hopefuls posted in their first day. Sanders, the independent senator from Vermont who caucuses with Democrats, kicked off his dark horse campaign for the Democratic nomination on Thursday with an email to supporters and a press conference outside the U.S. Capitol. Since then, more than 100,000 people signed up for the campaign and 35,000 people donated money, according to a campaign press release. The average donation was $43.54. "This is a remarkable start...

Columba Bush, the famously private wife of former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, appears to be taking on an increasingly prominent role in her husband’s nascent presidential campaign. Later this month, Mrs. Bush will headline a fundraiser for her husband’s leadership PAC, Right to Rise, in Miami. This week, she attended a retreat for Mr. Bush’s donors at an oceanfront luxury hotel in Miami Beach, where she gave a heartfelt speech about her husband, according to those present. Her name has also been popping up with increasing frequency in fundraising emails — last week she asked supporters to “join with my...

FLINT, Mich., April 30 (UPI) -- Michael Moore turned to Twitter Thursday morning to voice his demands to society in the wake of civil unrest in Baltimore. "Imprison u, shoot u, sever your spine, crush your larynx, send u to war, keep u poor, call u a thug, not let u vote. But u can sing for us," the controversial film director tweeted to his 1.83 million followers. He went on to demand that all African-Americans currently incarcerated for non-violent or drug crimes to be released immediately. "I don't believe 50% of them did what they're accused of," he said....

Just weeks ago, the 33-year-old with model good looks was an Instagram star, posting endless photographs of himself — some of them shirtless — jetsetting around the world, hobnobbing with celebs, training with troops and surfing and sunbaking in exotic locations. Now, he is the subject of a federal investigation and the target of a multi-million dollar class action. The pictures have also been used to fuel rumours that Schock is gay — an issue only because of his staunchly Republican views and the fact that he campaigned against marriage equality. On April 15, lawyer Daniel Kurowski filed a lawsuit...

Baltimore crowds celebrate tough charges against police Last Baltimore: Residents of impoverished West Baltimore erupted in jubilation and relief Friday after authorities charged six officers in the death in custody of a young African American man. Many had been parading through riot-scarred neighborhoods and chanting the victim`s name as security forces nervously looked on. "Baltimore people, we did it!" shouted 18-year-old John Johnson. "Justice needs to be served!" Cars streamed down West North Avenue in a cacophony of horns, as a man wearing a t-shirt that read "I Bleed Baltimore" thrust his fists into the air and cheered. The community...

The data obtained by Teresa Fernández-Crespo in seven megalithic graves in La Rioja and Araba-Álava suggest that certain individuals were excluded from burial on the basis of age and sex. The research Demographic evidence of selective burial in megalithic graves of northern Spain by Teresa Fernández-Crespo and Concepción de la Rúa of the Department of Genetics, Physical Anthropology and Animal Physiology of the UPV/EHU-University of the Basque Country challenges the widely-held view that societies were egalitarian during the late Neolithic and Chalcolithic ages. This work, published in the leading Journal of Archaeological Science, comes from Fernández-Crespo’s PhD thesis entitled Antropología...
  • Oklahoma Repeals Knife ban that Balimore Police used to Arrest Freddy Grey

Oklahoma has repealed their version of the switchblade knife ban.   Baltimore has a similar law that Freddy Grey was arrested under before his death from a serious spinal cord injury, three fractured vertebrae, and a crushed voice box, apparently while in police custody.   The Baltimore law is more vague than the Oklahoma law HB 1911(pdf) , and the AG in Baltimore has ruled that the arrest was illegal, probably for two reasons. First, the knife was not concealed. The officer noted that he saw the knife clipped to the front pants pocket. Second, the knife was not a...

May 1, 2015 (ThePublicDiscourse.com) -- I am one of six adult children of gay parents who recently filed amicus briefs with the US Supreme Court, asking the Court to respect the authority of citizens to keep the original definition of marriage: a union between one man and one woman to the exclusion of all others, so that children may know and may be raised by their biological parents. I also live in Canada, where same-sex marriage was federally mandated in 2005.I am the daughter of a gay father who died of AIDS. I described my experiences in my book: Out From...

In the past few months, the Capitol Hill Police has recorded at least three instances where their officers accidentally left their loaded Glocks in bathrooms — WAIT, HOLD UP, WHAT?! Roll Call, which broke this mindblowing tale of stupidity, reports that two of the guns were found in the Capitol office complexes itself: one in the bathroom of the Capitol Visitors Center, casually wedged into a toilet seat cover dispenser. One was reportedly picked up by an 8-year-old boy touring Speaker John Boehner’s office with his parents. (Let’s repeat that: An 8-year-old tourist found a Glock in Boehner’s office.) The...

Citing a need to protect citizens' religious liberty, Ted Cruz on Friday called on Congress to formerly disapprove of a bill passed by the District of Columbia council preventing employers from retaliating against workers who have abortions or premarital sex. "The D.C. Council has proposed two measures that trample the very rights the First Amendment was designed to protect — the right of citizens to freely practice their faith. "The Constitution gives Congress the authority to exercise jurisdiction over the District of Columbia ‘in all cases whatsoever.' And both the House and Senate have a constitutional duty to protect citizens'...

Had Freddie Gray been robbed, beaten and left to die in the streets of his Baltimore neighborhood, no one would be mourning him today. No one would be marching for Freddie. No one would be using Freddie as the new poster child of “Black Lives Matter!” No one would care, three weeks later, but his family and friends. It was the manner of his death, suffering a fractured spine in police custody, that makes Freddie matter. For he can now be credibly cast in the victim’s role in the great new narrative against America – that ours is a society...

This campaign has legs.GOP insiders are giving Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, high marks for his campaign rollout, now a month into his presidential bid. As reported by the Washington Times, the key to Cruz’s success in the GOP primary is the solidifying of his place as the anti-establishment candidate in the race. “He is expanding his base, and he is right now hitting on a lot of cylinders and I think the mechanics of the campaign have done well,” said Dave Carney, a GOP operative in New Hampshire. “My advice is: do not underestimate him. Former President Bill Clinton and daughter Chelsea left earlier this week on a nine-day tour through Africa with a plane-full of family foundation donors and Hillary Clinton supporters in tow, adding jet fuel to accusations that contributors are getting rewarded -- and courted for even more money. Those on the four-country tour are expected to observe foreign projects the Clinton Global Initiative has backed connected to health care, global warming, wildlife protection, education and agriculture. While foundation aides tout their many successful initiatives in Africa, the trip comes amid the growing controversy over donations to the Clinton family's foundation. Conservative...

An out-of-control Russian Progress capsule, loaded with more than 3 tons of cargo for the International Space Station, may burn up in the atmosphere as early as next week, NASA said on Friday. Ground controllers lost contact with the ship shortly after its launch on Tuesday from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. Engineers tried for more than a day to rescue the craft, to no avail ... An investigation in the botched mission is underway. Preliminary findings indicate a problem with the capsule’s separation from its Soyuz launcher. Among the evidence: debris orbiting near the tumbling Progress capsule, the Air...

Is it just me or does it seem to me that inthe last 10 years maybe longer that the overwhelming pressure in society is to become a "rental" based economy vs. an "ownership" economy? We see this everywhere, from local businessees offering leasing options for people wanting to buy items like TV's, Furniture, and Appliances, to propsals being made in government to collect "taxes" on miles drven on cars.
