In an address to American students on Tuesday, President Obama told Students: ‘The Farther You Go In School, The Farther You’ll Go In Life’. He also stressed that nothing is beyond their reach as long as they dream big, work hard and focus on learning. I’ve drafted a version of Obama’s address that merges his political philosophy with the optimistic ideals above. I’m truly honored and privileged to have an opportunity to provide American students with my roadmap to success. I am humbled as I look across the auditorium and see so many faces glowing with youthful optimism and hopeful...

Critics assail the US Department of the Interior's draft policy on scientific integrity. If there is one thing about Barack Obama's US presidency that has warmed the hearts of scientists, it is his March 2009 memo on scientific integrity. It seemed to signal a break from alleged political interference with science, and suggested that the incoming government would put sound science at the centre of policy-making. But the first draft policy on scientific integrity from a federal agency, released by the Department of the Interior (DOI) on 31 August, has drawn a storm of criticism from watchdogs including the Union...

When one of the homes in C Blythe Andrews townhomes was burglarized this summer, the neighborhood crime watch group swung into action. Six women and a man began patrolling the property looking for suspicious activity. The activity was also looking for them. At the edge of the property, crime watch volunteer Julie Shaw says a group of neighborhood "thugs" gathered. "They hate crime watch," said Shaw. "They were like, you guys aren't going to do anything. 'F' Crime Watch." As the taunting grew, the volunteers say some of the men began exposing themselves. "They were showing us their private parts,"...

U.S. and Iraqi forces raided a neighborhood in the longtime Sunni Muslim insurgent stronghold of Fallujah early Wednesday, Iraqi officials said, killing seven people in the deadliest joint operation since President Barack Obama announced the end of the American combat mission in Iraq two weeks ago. The incident underscored how American forces remain engaged in offensive operations despite Obama's declaration that the fewer than 50,000 remaining U.S. troops would focus on advising and training the Iraqi military and police. Iraqi police officials said that the raid, which also wounded three people, began when the U.S.-Iraqi team set off explosives around...

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) on Wednesday predicted to The Hill that Democratic senatorial candidate Chris Coons will safely win the Nov. 2 general election against GOP nominee Christine O'Donnell. Reid talked up the New Castle County executive following a memorial ceremony on the Capitol's East steps to comemorate the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. O'Donnell on Tuesday night won the GOP nomination to face Coons in November — a result that has split the national Republican Party. But Reid said Coons would have won even if Rep. Mike Castle (R) had prevailed over O'Donnell. "I'm going to be...

It's difficult to think of somebody who has done more harm to the causes he purports to represent than Feisal Abdul Rauf -- the so-called Ground Zero Imam. He claims he wishes to improve the standing of Muslims in the United States, to build understanding between religions, and to enhance the reputation of America in the Muslim world. But in the weeks since he -- unintentionally, he says -- set off an international conflagration over his plans to build an Islamic center near the scene of the Sept. 11 terrorist attack in New York, he has set back all three...

A Democratic lawmaker signed onto a Republican petition to repeal healthcare reform. Rep. Gene Taylor (D-Miss.) signed onto a discharge petition drafted by Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa), Taylor's office confirmed. His office would not offer any additional comment. Taylor is the first Democrat to sign onto the petition, a reflection of the tough electoral climate facing Democrats this fall, especially over healthcare reform. “Adding Rep. Taylor to the discharge petition is a significant step towards repealing Obamacare,” said King. “Rep. Taylor is the first Democrat to sign the discharge petition, and it is my hope that his decision will...

A New York man was arrested Wednesday on charges that he unwittingly funded a Connecticut man's attempt to bomb Times Square on May 1 by providing unlicensed banking services, an arrest that continues an effort by federal authorities to reduce the illegal flow of money that can finance terrorism. Mohammad Younis, 44, was accused in an indictment in U.S. District Court in Manhattan of engaging in hawala activities, an informal banking system which relies on wire transfers, couriers and overnight mail. He was arrested at his Long Island home and brought to the courthouse, where he was expected to make...

BRUSSELS, Sept 15 (Reuters) - U.S. President Barack Obama's popularity remains high in Europe but has fallen in the past year as doubts emerge about some of his foreign policies, an opinion poll published on Wednesday showed. The annual Transatlantic Trends survey, conducted during June in 11 European Union countries, Turkey and the United States, found that while Obama remained more popular than his predecessor George W. Bush, there were concerns about the line he had taken on issues such as Iran and its nuclear programme. Most of the Europeans surveyed said they wanted the United States to exert strong...

3/13/2010 WASHINGTON (AP) - Confronting misgivings, even in his own party, President Barack Obama mounted a stout defense of his blueprint to overhaul the economy Thursday, declaring the national crisis is "not as bad as we think" and his plans will speed recovery. Barack Obama recently named Austan Goolsbee, the wanna-be comedian, to lead the Council of Economic Advisers. Goolsbee tells America that unemployment will remain high for, well, likely as long as Obama remains President: "I don't think the unemployment rate will be coming down significantly at any time in the near future," according to POLITICO's Mike Allen. Obama...

Washington’s bureaucratic turf wars are a dismal reality of politics in Beltwayistan, but are now threatening national policy, as competing agendas threaten policies extending far beyond the continental U.S. In two of the most notable recent examples, the Kazakh “Giffengate” corruption case and attempts to extradite notorious “Lord of War” Viktor Bout to the United States, eager federal officials in both cases are running up against other government elements content to let both cases lie fallow, notably the CIA and Pentagon. The controversies, schizophrenic as they are, shed a bright light into the darker corners of federal realpolitic, pitting the...

People have asked me my opinion of the Rev. Terry Jones' threat to burn the Quran this past weekend. Personally I think the best thing to do with this story is to not give this insignificant media-hound with all of fifty parishioners avoice. But it's way too late for that now. So, of course I find the action in poor taste - I would never burn any religion's sacred parchment. That is just wrong and disrespectful to millions trying to practice their faith and go about their daily lives in peace. However, something did occur to me this weekend. Jones...

Sen. Jim DeMint (R., S.C.) is now one of the most powerful forces in the Republican party, whether his colleagues in the Senate Republican leadership like it or not. And based on quotes like this, I’m going to guess the answer is “not.†To ABC’s Jonathan Karl: I asked Senator DeMint if he’ll have any regrets if come November 3rd he realizes Republicans blew their chance at winning a majority because some of the candidates he supported lost.“No. I’ve been in the majority with Republicans who didn’t have principles and we embarrassed ourselves and lost credibility in front of the...

Want to make friends in "elite" political blogosphere? Don't dare be outspoken on behalf of Delaware Republican U.S. Senate nominee Christine O'Donnell. In a Sept. 15 post on his The Atlantic blog, "The Daily Dish," Sullivan takes a break from gossiping about political figures' genitalia to take on conservative talker Mark Levin's response to those who were seemingly hell-bent on O'Donnell not being the Delaware GOP nominee within the conservative media intelligentsia. After going through a litany of Levin's alleged indiscretions against O'Donnell detractors, Sullivan argues that his so-called "conservative" counterparts had it coming since Levin had been so critical...

Thanks to an international outcry, Iranian officials apparently have "suspended" the death sentence against Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, convicted in 2006 for the crime of "adultery" (even though her husband already had died at the time of her allegedly "illicit" relationship). Yet her life remains hellish. This week, it was reported that, even as she was waiting on death row, Ashtiani got 99 lashes for the further crime of appearing in a Times of London photo without a headscarf. (The Times now concedes that the photo actually was of another woman -- adding an additional level of surreal suffering to what...
