In understanding how far the Democratic Party has moved from its center of gravity in an earlier generation, it is salutary to remember that Democrats were once known as the more international and hawkish of the two political parties. Until the late 1960s, Democrat presidents were consistently more likely than Republicans to flex America’s military might abroad. Democrat administrations led America into both World Wars. Democrat president Harry Truman promulgated the Truman Doctrine which like Bush’s own doctrine pledged America to support peoples fighting for their freedom abroad. No president during the Cold War sounded the call to arms...

Tuesday, September 15, 2009 Make 'em Feel the Heat [Iain Murray] President Reagan said, "When you can't make them see the light, make them feel the heat." An Iraqi journalist who gained worldwide fame after hurling his shoes at George W. Bush today claimed he had been tortured while in prison. Muntadhar al-Zeidi was freed to a hero's welcome after spending nine months behind bars for his extraordinary attack on the former US president. Hundreds of people congregated to meet him, a phalanx of gun-toting men fired volleys into the air while women cried out and broke into traditional Iraqi dances. Supporters around the world have offered him everything from a harem to a four-bedroom house while one Saudi man reportedly offered to pay $10 million for...

The tide is turning… “On health care, forget the rage set off by private citizen Sarah Palin tweeting about “death panels.” Forget the misleading talk about whether there will be a “public option.” (The ever-evolving plan is one giant public option, folks.) Forget the angry voters who crowded into the town halls during the August recess. Forget that a number of Democratic senators and Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) are still not willing to sign on to a bill. Right now, even after Obama’s address to the joint session of Congress last week, its possible Democrats don’t even have the votes...

They were designed to make Dubai the envy of the world: a series of paradise islands inhabited by celebrities and the super-rich reclaimed from the azure waters of the Arabian Gulf and shaped like a map of the Earth. It was called The World. As millions of tonnes of rock were dumped into the sea for the foundations, timely leaks suggested that Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie were to buy Ethiopia, Richard Branson was tipped to occupy England, while Rod Stewart would border him in Scotland. Instead it has become the world's most expensive shipping hazard,

Barack Obama hoped to use a prime-time speech to the joint session of Congress to change the momentum for ObamaCare. Initially, Obama seemed to get a bump inside the Beltway, with fence-sitter Sen. Ben Nelson (D-NE) calling it a “game changer.” Even Rasmussen detected a shift in support initially, both for Obama and his health-care system overhaul. However, six days later, Rasmussen now says it wasn’t even a nine-day wonder (via HA reader Geoff A): Following President Obama’s speech to Congress last week, support for his health care reform plan increased steadily to a peak of 51% yesterday. However, the...

"I think Van Jones was not, this was not a big guy in the White House administration. If we're all going to focus on trying to figure out who Van Jones and his past relationships, when you go #600 down on the list of White House staff. Is that the best use of the time of the mainstream media? You know, we'll see. Clearly some on the right had objections to Van Jones and they successfully got the White House to sever ties."

A skeleton, found at one of the most important, but least understood, Roman sites in Britain is puzzling experts from The University of Nottingham. Dr Will Bowden from the Department of Archaeology, who is leading excavations at the buried town of Venta Icenorum at Caistor St Edmund in Norfolk, said the burial was highly unusual: “This is an abnormal burial. The body, which is probably male, was placed in a shallow pit on its side, as opposed to being laid out properly. This is not the care Romans normally accorded to their dead. It could be that the person was...

A Westminster man is accused of sexually abusing a 12-year-old girl and forcing her to sell marijuana. While Congressman Joe Wilson from South Carolina gets harangued by his colleagues (Republican and Democrat alike) for yelling “That’s a lie!” During President Obama’s 38th healthcare speech, much of America is cheering him on—or are at least sympathetic to the legislator and the frustration that led to his outburst. In that same spirit of profound indignation, thousands have been showing up at tea parties and town halls across the nation, creating their own passionate slogans and making impassioned speeches to legislators who “can’t handle the truth” because they’re saturated in a culture that has made obfuscation of truth routine behavior....

World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) CEO Linda McMahon appears primed to run for Senate in Connecticut and should make an announcement very soon, according to sources with knowledge of her deliberations. “A decision is imminent, and she will likely make a decision over the next couple of days,” said a Republican strategist. “It will be made sooner rather than later.” One well-placed source said McMahon is “99 percent” in. Another said the announcement could come as early as Wednesday.

Overwhelming responses want this on a Saturday - OKAY, then let it be written... Saturday it is!!! Obviously, the "main stream" media are hard of hearing and seeing. They need our help... surely those who longed to go and couldn't would love to be a part of Operation "Can You Hear Us Now?" Well my friends, HAVE I GOT A PLAN FOR YOU...

There are plenty of questions surrounding the death of Christopher Kelly, the one-time confidante of Rod Blagojevich who was headed off to prison soon. Questions about what drugs Kelly took. Questions about the "mystery man" with gray hair who tried to pick up Kelly's Cadillac SUV from the hospital. Questions about whether the pressure to cooperate with federal authorities or the prospect of a long stretch in prison, drove him to suicide. Questions about how his death will impact the prosecution of Blagojevich. There's something else that deserves real scrutiny: What kind of medical care did Kelly get at Oak...

Former president George W. Bush had a flair for insulting the people fighting to be his successor, former speechwriter Matt Latimer reveals in the October issue of GQ. The piece, an excerpt from Latimer's forthcoming book, "Speech Less: Tales of a White House Survivor," gives a candid look at the final days of the Bush presidency. In several passages, Bush comments on the candidates then vying for the White House: The president, like me, didn't seem to be in love with any of the available options. He always believed Hillary Clinton would be the Democratic nominee. "Wait till her fat...
