Rasmussen: Speech bump over, ObamaCare support drops again
Hot Air ^ | SEPTEMBER 15, 2009 | ED MORRISSEY

Barack Obama hoped to use a prime-time speech to the joint session of Congress to change the momentum for ObamaCare. Initially, Obama seemed to get a bump inside the Beltway, with fence-sitter Sen. Ben Nelson (D-NE) calling it a “game changer.” Even Rasmussen detected a shift in support initially, both for Obama and his health-care system overhaul. However, six days later, Rasmussen now says it wasn’t even a nine-day wonder (via HA reader Geoff A):

Following President Obama’s speech to Congress last week, support for his health care reform plan increased steadily to a peak of 51% yesterday. However, the bounce appears to be over. The latest daily tracking shows that support has fallen all the way back to pre-speech levels.

Forty-five percent (45%) of all voters nationwide now favor the plan while 52% are opposed. A week ago, 44% supported the proposal and 53% were opposed…

I can’t remember but isn’t this the same pollster that skewed the original poll by calling 45 percent Dims?

There was no “bump.”

The problem is the speech never really addressed the concerns the people who read the bill had.

It was good red meat for the base, but that has a short life span

It would be interesting if they just polled the same people over and over. Do people really change their minds constantly based on what they last heard??

That was CNN - I am sure CNN’s post-speech bump will last at least another decade, as teh polling pool is further adjusted weekly to include yet more Dims.

The speech may have, eventually, done more harm for the president than good.

Initially, folks that have not been following it may have thought, “Yea. I like everything he said. That’s what I want.”

Then they start to pay attention and listen to what else is going on. If they were never to watch a prime time speech, many would still be out to lunch regurgitating whatever they last heard on NBC or read in the NYT.

The problem is the speech never really addressed the concerns the people who read the bill had.

Not only that but the tease for the speech was that he was going to reveal his own plan but of course never did. Also after a long line of switching back and forth between "a public option is necessary" and "we can live without it if need be" he again fell squarely in the "necessary" column in his speech.

What he has achieved is to alienate over half of the public by half-truths, out-and-out lies and finger-pointing accusations. In the process he probably has managed to torpedo at least the worst of the Tax-and-Trade and Card Check bills. Let's kill this beast first and then on to those other two.

That’s awesome. Interestingly enough it is even clearer when thumbnailed.

Mr. Obama looks pretty on stage and he reads good teleprompter. When he gives speeches the tendency is for viewers to want to like the guy.

But the magic doesn’t last forever. Every speech he gives uses up a little more “manna” and he’s given so many speeches lately that are long on charm and short on actual content that viewers are past the point of being bored and are now getting into the territory of wishing the guy would just go away for awhile.

The Democrats got themselves a walking, talking bumper sticker slogan as a nominee and won the White House with him. They foolishly thought this would be enough all by itself and all they had to do was sit in their offices with their feet up on their desks and run the country by congressional act and presidential decree, and send Mr. Obama out to read off of his teleprompter once a week and the peasants would go along with it without question.

Things are not going exactly according to that plan and they haven’t quite figured out why.

Obama is like bad chinese food.

Tastes OK going down but later it's 'head for the throne' time.

CNN skewed 41-18 Dem to Repub in their sample. Figuring 100% support/oppose on those lines, the poll still favored the Republican position. Roughly 73% Dem in sample but only 60%-ish support.

Rasmussen is pretty even in methodology - a good pollster.

“It was good red meat for the base, but that has a short life span”

This is what Rasmussen said about the temporary bounce.

“The gain in overall support for the plan comes entirely from Democrats. Eighty-four percent (84%) of those in the President’s party now support the health care plan, up from 72% earlier in the week. Support among Republicans is unchanged while support among those not affiliated with either major party has fallen.”
