Toyota's financial unit has asked for an emergency loan from a state-backed lender, with reports putting the figure at more than $3 billion. The world's biggest car maker says the international financial situation is squeezing its business, forcing it to ask for an emergency loan from the Japan Bank for International Cooperation. It is the first time the state-backed bank has been asked to lend to a Japanese car buyer. It is being reported that Toyota is asking for 200 billion yen. The world's biggest auto manufacturer is expecting to report a $7 billion operating loss later this month.

The pot has issued the kettle an ultimatum: tax dodgers beware. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, who was forced to fork up $34,000 in unpaid back taxes, told the House Ways and Means Committee Tuesday that the Obama administration will be going after people who avoid and evade taxes. Gov. David Paterson’s approval rating has plunged 20 points in the past month to the lowest point ever for that office, according a poll conducted by Marist College. Thin-film solar cell manufacturer First Solar yesterday announced it has broken the $1 (70p) per watt cost barrier that is widely accepted as the point at which solar panels become cost competitive with fossil fuels. The company said that during the fourth quarter of last year, the manufacturing cost for its solar modules stood at 98 cents per watt, taking it below the $1 per watt mark for the first time.
