:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Critical Threats: Blank When None
Pentagon Makes Fighting Extremism Top Priority

Seven years after the Sept. 11 attacks, the Pentagon on Thursday officially named "the long war" against global extremism as its top priority and pledged to avert any conventional military threat from China or Russia through dialogue.

The Defense Department, in a new national defense strategy, also emphasized the need to subordinate military operations to "soft power" initiatives to undermine Islamist militancy by promoting economic, political and social development in vulnerable corners of the world.

Defense Secretary Robert Gates said he hoped the change would help establish permanent institutional support for counterinsurgency skills acquired in Iraq and Afghanistan within a defense community heavily skewed in favor of expensive conventional and strategic modernization programs. Read More

“Re-Establishing The Cold War Connection?”
By Stephen Brown
FrontPageMagazine.com | Friday, August 29, 2008

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “With its victory sealed over Georgia, Russia is starting to make life uncomfortable for another American ally.

Last week’s two-day meeting in the southern Russian city of Sochi between Syrian leader Bashir al-Assad and Russia’s President Dimitri Medvedev is causing Israel no little concern. Syria was the second country after Belarus to publicly support Russia for its actions in Georgia, and Assad pulled no punches in backing its former Cold War ally.

“I want to express my support for the Russian position in Abkhazia and South Ossetia,” said the Syrian president. “…We oppose attempts to tarnish Russia’s position.”

As his reward, Assad hurried to Russia, his third trip there since taking power in Syria in 2000, to negotiate an arms deal for the modern weapons his military so desperately needs.”

August 29, 2008

Al-Qaeda network in Hamrin Mountains decimated

BAGHDAD – Coalition forces detained eight suspected terrorists Thursday and Friday as they continued to run down the al-Qaeda in Iraq network, especially in the Hamrin Mountains region, where they detained four wanted men.

One of the wanted men, captured Thursday near Qara Tappa with one alleged associate, is assessed to be a senior advisor for AQI operations around the Hamrin Mountains. Three other wanted men in the region were captured in a Friday operation with one additional suspect. One of the wanted men allegedly operates an attack cell that also provides security for terrorist operations. Two others are reportedly involved in smuggling, attacks on Coalition forces and facilitating female suicide bombers, who have repeatedly attacked Iraqi civilians.

South of Baghdad near Mahmudiyah, a man already in Coalition custody turned in an alleged associate of a senior AQI leader Friday. The alleged associate and one other suspected terrorist were detained in the operation.

12 decapitated bodies found in Mexico
news.yahoo.com ^ | Fri Aug 29, 1:35 AM ET | AFP
Posted on August 29, 2008 4:07:59 AM PDT by VU4G10

MERIDA, Mexico (AFP) - Twelve decapitated bodies bearing signs of torture were found Thursday in eastern Mexico, authorities said, adding that they were still looking for the heads. Eleven headless male bodies were found piled on top of each other and covered with blankets in a suburb of the city of Merida, the capital of Yucatan state. Some of the cadavers also had their legs tied, an AFP photographer saw. One was completely naked, while others wore denim clothing. Some of the murdered men had tattooed arms. A twelfth body was found in a town called Buctzotz, 70 kilometers (45 miles) northeast of Merida. Its head is also missing.

Bush urged to block Mexican military Agents cite rash of incursions
Washington Times ^ | Thursday, August 28, 2008 | Jerry Seper
Posted on August 28, 2008 1:07:47 PM PDT by ckilmer

The U.S. Border Patrol’s largest union local has asked President Bush to put an end to the scores of Mexican military incursions into the United States that have put Border Patrol agents at risk of being injured or killed. “It is disgraceful that Border Patrol agents are put in harm’s way and our government doesn’t do everything reasonably within its power to protect us from marauding Mexican soldiers and others,” said Edward “Bud” Tuffly II, head of Local 2544 of the National Border Patrol Council (NBPC) in Tucson. “Without a forceful response to these illegal incursions, an agent will eventually be seriously wounded or killed. It is only a matter of time,” Mr. Tuffly said. “The incursions will not stop until the Mexican military units and their commanders are held accountable for their actions.” In a letter Saturday to Mr. Bush, Mr. Tuffly asked the president to “take a strong stand against” Mexican military incursions.

Ten Afghans held after British journalism student is gang-raped by asylum seekers
Daily Mail (London) ^ | August 29, 2008 | Peter Allen and Emily Andrews
Posted on August 29, 2008 5:24:31 AM PDT by reaganaut1

A British woman has been raped by a gang of asylum seekers in Calais, it has been alleged.

The journalism student wanted to highlight the plight of migrants who sleep rough in a squalid camp at the French port before trying to sneak into Britain.

She was subjected to a horrific attack by six Afghan men she intended to write about, it was claimed.

French riot police rounded up 200 migrants for questioning.

Ten remained in custody tonight and police said it was possible all had been involved in the rape, which detectives described as ‘extremely brutal’.

Police said the 31-year-old victim, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was a London student who had travelled to France ‘to highlight problems surrounding clandestine immigration’.

...

The victim remains in Calais, with police hoping she will be able to identify her attackers. Tonight she was described as ‘utterly traumatised and receiving counselling’.

A police spokesman said: ‘She appeared to be working alone, which was clearly a very dangerous thing to do. We fear that the men she was reporting on attacked her in the wood where they were staying.

‘She deeply regrets going into The Jungle alone, especially at night. She concedes it was a very dangerous thing to do.’

...

Stephen Ward, course director of the noSWeat Journalism Training centre in London, said: ‘We have 250 students and she could be one of ours, we just don’t know at the moment. It’s the summer holidays and our students are very ambitious and very hardworking.

‘Going to Calais to find out the real story of the immigrants is just the sort of self-starting thing they would do. But if one of them has come to harm, it will be very sad indeed ...’

Afghan president ‘pardoned rapists’
NowPublic ^ | August 24, 2008 | Staff
Posted on August 26, 2008 9:17:40 AM PDT by forkinsocket

The Afghan president, Hamid Karzai, has pardoned three men who had been found guilty of gang raping a woman in the northern province of Samangan.

The woman, Sara, and her family found out about the pardon only when they saw the rapists back in their village.

“Everyone was shocked,” said Sara’s husband, Dilawar, who like many Afghans uses only one name. “These were men who had been sentenced and found guilty by the Supreme Court, walking around freely.”

Sara’s case highlights concerns about the close relationship between the Afghan president and men accused of war crimes and human rights abuses.

The men were freed discreetly but the rape itself was public and brutal. It took place in September 2005, in the run up to Afghanistan’s first democratic parliamentary elections.

The most powerful local commander, Mawlawi Islam, was running for office despite being accused of scores of murders committed while he had been a mujahedeen commander in the 1980s and a Taliban governor in the 1990s, and since the fall of the Taliban in 2001. Sara said one of his sub-commanders and body guards had been looking for young men to help in the election campaign.

Former Talk Radio Host Sentenced to 87 Months in Prison for Distributing Child Pornography

WASHINGTON – Bernard V. Ward, 57, a San Francisco resident who previously worked as a radio station talk show host, was sentenced today to serve 87 months in prison, followed by a lifetime of supervised release, Acting Assistant Attorney General Matthew Friedrich of the Criminal Division announced.

On May 8, 2008, Ward pleaded guilty to one count of distributing child pornography through the Internet. According to the plea documents, Ward admitted that in December 2004, he used an online screen name to engage in an Internet chat conversation with an unknown individual also using a screen name. During that conversation, Ward admitted that he sent an image of child pornography depicting nude children engaged in sexually explicit conduct via his e-mail account. Ward also admitted that he used the same e-mail account to distribute 15 to 150 images of child pornography to other individuals. These images involved prepubescent children engaged in sexually explicit conduct, some with sadistic, masochistic or violent conduct.

The case was prosecuted by Trial Attorneys Steve Grocki, Jennifer Leonardo and Michael Yoon of the Criminal Division’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section and investigated by the FBI.

“Morocco ‘breaks terror network’”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “The Moroccan authorities say they have broken up a militant cell operating in several towns in the kingdom.

The group allegedly had links with al- Qaeda and police described the 15 people arrested as “dangerous”.

They had electronic and chemical materials used to make explosives, reports the state press agency, MAP.

It is the fourth such network Morocco says it has broken up this year. An al-Qaeda-inspired group has said it was behind recent attacks in Algeria.

“The members of this structure, known as “Fath al-Andalous” [Conquest of Andalusia], planned to carry out attacks in Morocco and had formed operational links with foreign extremists who have pledged allegiance to the al-Qaeda organisation,” MAP says.

The BBC’s James Copnall in Morocco says this is almost certainly a reference to al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (QIM), an organisation largely based in neighbouring Algeria which has ties with Osama bin Laden’s movement.”
